Cow Giving Bloody Milk.

An Atchison ,Po. (Kan.) corr3s

that gives bloody milk from one teat.

NEGLECT OF Al'lMW3l.—lllany are
careless/about the sort of provision
they dinake for sheltering their
animals from cold. The American
Agriculturist has some very fitting
words on a subject which is of . im
portance to the stock
If shnimals were endowed with
speech they would often. remon
sate with their owners about the
negligence with' which they are Oc
caionally treated. And though they
cannot speak, yet:they have a certain
mute eloquence in their look,. and
tell their tale.withn force and point
.that is often more effectual than
words, Very often the rough, shag
gy, staring coat, the prominent ribs,
drooping head, woe begone counten
ance and appealing eye, tell the tale
aslainly as if it, wero_ in, print. It
tell-of hard work, poor feed, ex;
posure to storm and tempest and
keenly biting winds.
And l'et there,may be a tight, snug
barn, and stacks of !adder still ra
mainir2g in the field, while from very
thoughtlessness, the poor old faithful'
servant, who has plowed, his master's
fields year by year, is permitted to
remain in an airy yard or in. a bar
re,n pasture, with half fiilled belly,
and sniff with impatient appetite at
the fodder just beyond his reach
.
across the fence.
Animals exposed to the cold until
they are chilled, are stinted n their
growth, and gathering the seeds of
.future disease. Warmth saves feed.
Cold wastes feed. Stock well housed
keep - in batter condition on less food
4han those left mit doors inrail pens,
damp yards, or exposed pastures.
At this season no stock should be
kept out at nights nor on Stormy
days, - for the abrupt change from(
_ warm sunny days to cold storms of
rain - and- sleet, is too great a shock.
Pine board's are in a sense excellent
fOdder, r and a dry bed of straw the •
best of nutriment. Farmers who
consult the comfort of their stock
and their own profit, will see to it'
_that their stables and shedsare put
in [pod order, loose boards nailed
on, doors and roofs made tight, good
dry, straw furnished for bedding, and
that their cattle - are comfortably
sheltered, before the cold winds begin
to blow an - d. the first snow of the
season flies.
DESTROYING LICE..--Mireh cows and
,calves are usually the first tofbe in
fe-ted with lice, and they lex_tend
thence to the balance of the herd,
and in the spring - before shedding
the hair these parasites most prevail.
This is especially the case with those
herds that! are not thOronglaly cared
for, and with those whose masters
nild to their droves by purchase.
One of the easiest applications is
kerosene reduced with two-thirds its
bulk of water. A few applications
carefully applied _will usually' des
;troy vermin. Lard' oil with a
little sulphur mixed - in it is also a
1: good application;but if animals take
1 cold upon the appliCation of sulphur
sometimes they suffer from its effects.
A-strong decoction of tobacco water
• is also sure death to vermin. Its
thorough application,however, somel
times makes animals , sick, but the
consequences are only of short 'dura
tion. :Whatei'er the' application, it
must not be kilted. Flocks and
herds should be watched and the
application made while the parasites
' are confined to local quarters, and
thereafter good care and feeding will
ikeep.the animals clear.
GAPES IN CHICKENS. —The fatal die
ease caused by the presence of the
gape worm appears unusually pre
valent. I have had it in my own
runs, where it has attacked some
BeabrightbalOams; but I have found
no dif fi culty! 4 in curing it by the
means of I carbolic acid.. So potent
are the fuines of this powerful rem
edy, and so destructive are they to
parasite life, that their inhalation for
oven a few moments seems perfectly
effectual-in destroying the life of the
worm. It is not even necessary to
employ any special apparatus; a few
drops of carbOlic acid may be placed
in a, spoon and held over the flame
of a candle until the vapor is seen to
rise, when the head of - a yopng
chicken or pheasant (held in the
other hand) may be placed in the
vapor which the animal is forced to
inhale.. Care must be"' taken not to
carry on the proeess.until the fowl as .
well as the worms are killed. I find!
after expcsure to the fumes for a few
seconds the bird may be regarded as
cured, and may 1)(1,5 seen' running
about quite well on the following
day; if not, the.treatment should be
_repeated. The medical carbolic acid,
•Is preferable to the tarry liquid used
• for disinfecting sewers and drains. -

$75,000 TOE FRIENDSHIP
One of the most eccentric acts of
the late James McCully, the million
aire,,Mll,9 the leaving of
,a certificate,'
or order upon his administrators to
ray to an old friend, Mr. Robert D.
,Clark, dealer in boat stores, No 134
Water street, the sum of $75,000, `has
a token of friendship and good win."
These men had been intimate friends'
for a quarter of o century, and Mr.
McCully always regarded it as a
,pleasure to aid Mr. Clark in any way
he desired. In April last, it is said
Mr. McCully presented Mr. Clark
With the certificate above referred to,
which, is signed without a 'witness,
and the only consideration mentioned
is that of friendship and good will.
After the death of Mr. McCully, Mr.
Clark placed the certificate in
hands of M. W. Acheson, Egg , ALt,
the igainst the estate.
They claim is certainly. a novel ono,
