E. Asuxuat• says he is bound to break up the systeni of " dead besting " practiced by the committee for seve ral years past. What a happy lot of fellows the Dem.-Libs. are. If Asumurr succeeds in collecting his bill, it is understood that several of the speakers who enlightened the people in regard to the corruptions of the Republican party last tall, will commence proctedings to secure pay for their services. Mayor CALDWELL, of Elmira, seems determined to enforce the laws. The Adrertiaer of Monday morning says : "The deterniinati , in of Mayor Caldwell to stop the kale of liquor in this city .on Sunday, was well evidenced last evening, by the shut ting up . of one of the most prominent and worst places in Elmira, and the arrest and locking up of the proprietor. J. S. Hill. for the violation of the law. The place is on Baldwin street, just above the post office, and Is called, with a reck less disregard for names. 'The Ofßee.' The /Mayor was informed that there was Scow sold and selling in this place yesterday. He took with him Marshal 0 Conner, Captain of the Night Watch Helmes, and Officer Slosson. They soon satisfied themselves of the truth of the report and moil% that besides liquor selling there was gambling going on. They demand ed admittance, which alter a time was granted them, when they arrested theproprietor of the S. Bill , John Birmingham and Orson Cook, and shut them tip in jail. They mil pro bably have a hearing this ramming before the Recorder." • R OBBERY AT PITTSTON.—W 9 have particulars of the rcbbery at Pittston, Pa., last Thursday morning. It was a triple-headed af fair. The burglirs first visited a blacksmttb shop, where they lifted a put. ch, a pair of tongs and.,a sledge hammer. They then forced the rear door of the post office; with the punch tuade a hole in theses, which they filled with powder, and exploding, burst the door open. There is a steam printing establishment in the same building with the post of and some neighbors near by heard - the noise of the ex plosion. They thought it the work of the en gine. 'Out of the safe in the post office, the burglars took about eight hundred and seventy dollars' worth of stamps and five registered let ten, eon taming forty dollars. Prom a shelf 'near the sale, the wretch, s took twenty-six dol lars belonging to one of the churgaes, the avails of a icrent collection, and fro ono of the drawers five dollars in nickels. 'Perhaps not satisfied with their haul here, the burglars blew open a sate in another part of town, the .. same mor l ning,.from which they gobbled fifty cents. They left a ten dollar counterfeit note which wu in the safe -they. had no use for it. It was not a very prikitable night's work for the thieves. They are supposed to be sharpers from Philadelphia, p.actieing in the country.— ' Elmira Adcertiser. - • TEWART, t pastor o SCRIBNER'S FOR A win. —The record , or "An Hour amoug the'Cir.-enbacka," iuScrib- tier's tor April, is as entertaining as a atoll. The unnamed author certainly writes from a thormigh acquaintance with his ilibleet, and gives with tho aid of pictures the best account yet published of the workings o the currency department. Miss Pnocron's profusely illus trated description of " Mowry and Southern Russia," will be read wah peculiar interest at this time, as well as the sketch of " An Emper or's Vacation at V.chy."
