ALMOSiT a Fn —A fire broke out
In the second story of Cnaltntarss's block, on.
Monday evening, which .might have proven
very disastrous. On that evening Mr. C.
lighted a coal fire for the firsiiime in a grate
which he-had Jost placed in his bed-room. Per
sons who were in the house during the evening
noticed a strong odor as of burning wood; but
the family thought nothing of it until about 11
o'clock, when they discovered that fire from
the grate had communicated with the floor,
and was burning the joists. It was speedily
extinguished. had Mr. ,Cuestsznuri retired
without didcovering it, the entire block would
in all probability have been destroyed.
FlRE.—Between 5 and [;.o'clock on
Monday morning last, COWLLL limes build
ing on Main street took fire and was entirely
destroyed. The building was, occupied by Its.
13. JOITICSON as a Grocery store, and Brtty
MrEa's Meat Market on the first floor. The
second floor was occupied as dwelling by P. W.
cowm.h, J. B. ,TentisoN and Mrs. CEEBEICCE.
The stock of` oods and most of the furniture
was destroyed. It is supposed that the fire
was caussd by the explosion of a kerosene lamp
which Mr. JOENBON had left. lighted on the
counter, while he went to the river
.for some
water. Mr. COWELL'S family lost nearly all
their clothing. There was $2,090 insurance on
building. _Mr. Joussos had 43,000 on stock,
which tall nearly cover his loss. There was
also a small insurance ou the furniture. We
have not learned the extent Of the loss, nor the
amount of Mr. Mymt's insurance.
air True to his natural instincts,
Judge 31Encrn is already bus) : at work in his
new and honorable position. We notice by the
Presithat a case involving a krge amount of
money, was argued before him, on Tuesday
last. In a report of the arguments we find the
following pleasant tilt between two distinguish
ed members of tha bar :
"Mr. Meredith indulged' in a genial vein of
humor, when alluding . to the report that his
Honor Judge Merour, to view of the very com
plex and difficult ease first presented to him
for judgment, was'shortly to resign the honor
able office to which he has so recently
been elected for fifteen years.
"Judge Woodward, in.his argument, pleas
antly referred to the conceit of his eminent and
venerable competitor, 11r. Meredith. He trnst
ed—whilo venturing to say that uo case invhlv
ing the same principles as - the Rush will case,
had ever been known to the practice of his
Honor, or would ever again Le known in Penn
sylvania int i licature—that his Honor might re
main mans.' years on the Supreme bench, to
honor and ()Thiry it, as his high legal talents
and virtues merited."
viir We often hear surprise ex
pressed at the rapid illCreaßb,Or Pll5 l / l esd in this
place, and we confessomme astonishment our
selves, at the magnitide of some of oar busi
ness establishments. Ohr leading dry goods
houses, hardwate establishments, etc., have
long been the admiratiUn of all . .citizens, and
the envy of business men in other localities.
But our attention was Nrlieularly called to
this subject by ajecent visit to the extensive •
Carriags Matintertory of JAYE& BRYANT, on
Elizabeth iltiett.' Although Mr. B. has been •
established here but a few years, he has built
up a largo busint.'9e, which we are pleased to
learn is rapidly increasing. Seine two years
since, his establishment which then occupied
tne ground 1.1.1 W covered by the large Boot and
Shoe liannisetory of RUSiPilitEr I3aos. S Tea
m was destroyed by fire. Nothing daunted,
however, lie immediately found tpaiPorary
quarters in which to carry on his business, and
'furnish employment to his mechanics, and the
following spring erected the handsonie build
ing which he afterwards sold to anatruar.x
Bites. Ai TRACY. He ,then built his present
Manufactory, fronting on Elizabeth street,
where he is now, we trust, permanently locat
ed. The work turned out from this Shop may
almost be said to have national reputation,
as Mr. BRY;ST ILLAXIIIed orders received from
Salt Lake City, and many other large towns.
His gentlemply deportment, enterprising spir
it, and honorable dealing have gained for hint
the confidence' and patronage of this entire
c enmu nity. To such an extent has his busi
ness grown, that he now finds it difficult to
keep up with his orders.
It is with the greatest pleasure that we • coin.
mend men of Mr. Bityssis entet iTise and rein:.
tation to the patronage of all our readers. We
c 1..) so in the 'nil assurance that they Will be
benefitted thereby.
air 'Ms. EDITOR : Perhaps your
readers will cot be intk-rested in the doings of
qur quiet community. We are vain enough to
suppie, they will be. But, after ad, we are not
gip just now. Three evenings of eve
ry week are devoted to the culture of the mu
sical blimp. J. 11. NiksJs is doing a much need
ed work in that direction, for the children and
young people, while a class of older wingers are
enjoying then,oiNi s finely 'miler the tuition of
Prof. N. B. ZiatainnaLlN.
