GLexcz eT CateLoo.—lir. Editor : I
had read with horror of the devastation of the
fires of Chicago, and wondered how time could
ever erase the destruction made by that terri
ble conflagration ; but when I came to visit the
city of ashes, my wonder bellied any descrip
tion of say pen, when I saw with my eyes the
progress wrought by enterprise in restoring
the business and beauty of this now far famed
city.
While riding through the streets - with Col F.,
I very innocently enquired, "Whore Is the
burnt district? Where are the sad evidences
of thit dreadful fire?" Ile says : `• Hero In
your very midst all was ruin—all was desola
tion. The Briggs House before you, with its
six stories and beautiful front of Cleveland
sandstone; the Chicago Bank, built of Cleve
land stone, and tinished with granite trim
mings, looming up with its five stories; there
! cific lintel, with its ponderous dimensions, and
its twelve huudred . roems, to cover which takes
eight acres of carpets ; the grain elevators, one
of which cost $1,250,000; all those majestic
business stores which you behold; are all the
work of our citizens since the fife.' I was led
to exclaim, " Wonder of woudersl a miracle of
enterprise 1"
To give yon some idea of the business Eit this
wonderful city, raised to life' by the power of
brick and mortar, applied with indomitable
perseverence and industry, I will state to you
my knowledge of the business of ono of tlxo
leading firms : Pim)), LEI.= (k, Co., in a tem
porary building prepared from a large horse.
car barn which escaped the fire, are employing
fire hundred men and women in carrying on.
their retail dry-goods trade. I was politely in
vitedby the foreman to examine the order of
the several departments, and found them su
perior to anything 1 had over seen, o 4 even im
agined. Their stdre is said to be• seeond only
to A. T. Srzwsnes, of New • Vork. The same
firm have also a wholesale and retail depart
ment in another portion of the laity, where eight
hundred men and women are employed, and
the firm 'estimate ;their business: during the
presenc year to exceed sixteen millions of dol
lars. •
These are only a small portion of the eviden
ces of the enterprise of tbo business men of
Chicago. A prominent banker informed mo
that there were more business houses in the
city Inoperation now than before the fire, and
that ono hundred thonsand had boon added to
its populr.tion since the fire in October last.

TEACIIERS' IXSTITCTE AT TROT.—The
Session opened at 2 o'clock r. st., on Monday, ,
Sept. 16. Mr. Keeney, the Superintendent, be
ing absent on account of sickness, Prof. Hutton,
of the Graded School at Troy,l opened the ex
ercises by singing, reading the Scriptures and
prayer., After a few introductory remarks by
Prof.' Hutton, explaining the ) reason of Mr.'
Keeney's absence, and welcoming the teachers
the Boro., 'Prof. Allen, of Mansfield, took
charge of the first exercise. •
His subject was '" School 'Economy." : He
very clearly showed the necessity of reducing
the number of classes in the schobl-room to
the minimimi point. Many pupils hare too
many studies, while sonic hare not enough.
TeaChers ought to see to it, and labor for the
adoption of a course of study. That no pupil
ought to have less than three studies, and never
