A Cheap Cellar Bottom. In sections of the country where there is! an abundance of akhle. stones, collect a few loads of those aboutfour or five inches in diameter, .e the bottom of the cellar, lay , cobbles in rows, and ram them clown one-third their thickness= into thetround, so that they will not be stalk below, the line _ of the rows iby any heavy snmincumbent preasnre, such as the.weight of a hogshead of molasses or tierce of vinegar. The bottom of the cellar should be grad ed. BO that tho.outside will be at least two inches lower thait the middle. A mistake sometimes occurs by grad ing the cellarltiottom in such a man ner that the centre will' be two or three inches lower than the outside. When this is the case, should water • enter from the outside, it will flow directly towards the middle. A straight-edged board should be plac ed frequently on each row of stones, ,as they are being rammed, so that : the upper sides' may be in line with each other. After - the stones are laid and well rammed down; place a few boards on the Pavement to walk on then make a grouting of clean sand and water lime, or Roseridale cement; and poor it on-the stones until all the interstices are filled. As soon as the grouting has set, spread a layer of good cement mortar one inch thick , over the top of the pavement, and trowel the surface off smoothly.. In order to spread the mortar true and even on the surface, lay an inch board one foot from the wall, on the surface of the pavement, stand on the board, and fill the space with mortar even with the top of the ' board, after which, move the board one foot, fill the space with mortar; and trowel it off smoothly. Such a floor will cost less than a board floor, and will . endure as long as the sal perstructius is kept_in repair. -1 atrial Meinthly. How to Thwart the Potato Bug A correspondent of the GardenTr'ri Monthly. I have watched their habits close-1 ly in three-different: States ; and us ; they will soon be upon you, a few re , ; marks may not be out of place • for ; if you are as ready to receive Iherti as we now are, they need not lie greatly dreaded after all. They love, some kinds better than others, as for, instance they prefer the Early York to the Early Rose, and will leave the Peach. Blow to the last. • Plant early, and you can give your. potatoes 'a good start before bugs gbt I f over their spring stupor. Plant 'early kinds, l`for- there are three distinct crops of bugs, and generally they t come in countleS'S number to take' the latest kindSl, Hand pick, if not very bad. Seelif there are many of the lady bug pr < lady bird, as it is somestimes called: r If they are plenty, they will take care of your potatoes' for you. They are a little red bug with dark spots, and cat their eggs veraciously. If neces'- Kiry to use other means, take one pound of Paris green to thirty pounds of common plaster and Mix thoroughly, and apply when the deir is on, and you will slaughter thein by hundreds of thousands. Ale plaster is_good for your potatoes and yon don't get green enough to hiirt anything. Apply as often as the vines need it, and you need have no fears as to the result. I have saved acres of potatoes this •summer Is 3, recommending this plan in our vil lage paper. When the bugs come, -plant as little around aspossible en rich it highly and use ashes and stilt to.counteract any tendency to rot, and.then you may laugh at the tikle stractioii -which wasteth at noon day." How TO WASII Su UM SIIITSL- Saminer suits are nearly all =Adel of whit&or buff linen,, pique, cambric, qr. muslin, and the art of preserving the new appearance after washing is a matter of the greatest importance. Common 'washer-women spoil e*e rything With soda, and nothing! is more frequent than to see the dsli cate, tints of lawni3 and percales turn ed into dark blotches and middy streakes by' the ignorance and van dalism of a laundress. It is worth while for, ladies to pay attention to this, and insist upon having their summer dresses washed according to. the directions which they should , be - prepared to give their laundress themselves. In.the first place, the water should be tepid, the soap si.ould not be allowed to touch' the fabric ; should be washed and rinsed quick, turned upon the wrong side, and hung in the shade to dry, arid wfien starched (in thin boiled, but not boiling starch) should be folded in sheets or towels and ironed upon the wrong side as soon as Om :‘ible. lint linen should be washed in water in which bay ors quirCbag of bran has been boiled. ...Thisllast will be found to answer for iltarch as well, and is-excellent for print dress of all kinds, but a handful of salt is very useful also to set the colors of light cambrics and dotted lawns; and a little ox gall will not only set but brighten yellow and purple tintioind has a' good effect upon green. Arrixs.—With us the use of! the apple, as an article of food, is far Jim a errated. Besides containing a large amount of sugar, mucilage and other nutritive matters, apples contain Veg etable and aromatic dualities, ;etc., which AO powerfully in the cUWiV of l refrigerantsPfhics and antise, and when freelAuEed at the seas , n of mellow ripe n they prevent '1• N 4 3 ,, indigestion, and avert, without doubt, many of the " ills that flesh is heir to." The operators of Cornrrall, England, consider ripe apples nearly as nourishing as bread ; and far More so than potatoes. In the year 1601 —!-which was a year of great scarcity ;apples, instead of being converted into cider, were sold to the poorl and laborers assert that they Could " stand their work." on baked apples without meat, whereas potato diet required either meat or some other sUbstautial nutriment. The :per mans and French use apples exclu sively ; so do the inhabitants Of all European nations. The laborer de pend upon them as an article of food, andl frequently make a dinner of sliced apples and bread. There , is no food cooked in as many difiCiOnt Ways in our conutry as apples, nor is there any fruit whose value as an ar tlele of nutriment is as great aid so little appreciated. -4101.
