_The Skimming System Clondemnisl.
........
It is of no use denying bets, keys
the Country Gerilleman,aad the troth
is, starting from the east. the laid is
robbed of more than half its'fertility,
and still as population moves On
does the exhausting system. IfWhest
a parish, a cennty, or a State is iludf
impoverished, a stop can be pitt to
the debilitating process, why] not
stop at . the begimung? why not re
imbarse from the start? Land is
seldom too rich, and when it is what
is is said to be "in the hikhest
state of fertility." what a OtY to
bring it down! Yet this . is_theetts
tom, the fashion, the example set by
all. This kind ofpolicy tarried into
other lines of bus iness would cause
men to say 'the guilty parties; were
insane or Jo*. Land'cannotthrow
up immense 'crops on water anil air;
'therefore, if these crops are sold off,
the land is that much the poorer; but
science and even common experience
proves there are stages at which
some of the productions Of thislearth
can be taken away when nod* has
been abstracted to cause in jury, and
if at this period of the crop sgrowth
it is turned into manure, the land is
benefitted without any foreign aid.
Thus, by' having intervening craps of
this kind, there may be things sold
one year which will be replaced the
next by this renovatioa. This is why
the four-course system, or some oth
er suitable rotation, is insisted upon
in Ertgland. Poor land is bionght
to belrich, .and good land is kept up
on the best estates; yet there are an
nually great quantities of fat cattle
and sheep sold from these farnis, and
wool, cheese, butter, &c., continue to
be produced, because there is an art
in doing this so as to improve and
increase the stamina of the soil.
RASPBERRY CULTURE.—We are
asked in regard to the culture of
the raspberry, why it is that just be
fore the berries fully -mature
great many seem ,
to dry up on one
side,- while the other seems compar
atively good and sound and goes on
ripening, but of course producing
an imperfect berry. . We give as
a reason and the true one, that the
vine lacks moisture at thel roots,-
either because the earth is natural
ly fp° dry for the raspberri, or-is
overrun with grass or weeds that
are extracting the moisture from
the, soil that ought to go to nourish
tho plant. The raspberry ih deci
dedly a surface feeder, se that
weeds and grass act directly upon
the sources of nourishment: It is
for this reason that stirring the
ground deeply in the fruiting season
is injurious, because it destroyS -a
great number of the fine surface
roots, which are the chief feeders
of the plant. Probably none of the
small frtiits or berries are s much
benefited by a liberal mulc hing of
coarse manure, straw, leaveS or saw
dust as the raspberry. it keeps
the ground moist at the Surface,
and if thick enough trill keep down
nearly all the weeds. Next to
mulching, a judicious irrigation,
particularly during the season of
- the ripening of the fruit; will be
very certain to insure a. good' crop
of sound berries on rich and other
wise suitable soil. 1
Pras ron Pios.---!The Sloa•• Yard
'Sun is satisfied from recent inquiries
that Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota,
Wyoming. Colorado, and such other
sections as do not produce icon) to
any advantiige because of .tlie 'brev
ity, and coldness of the season, may
all have success in pork producing,
simbly by raising oats and Pease for
feed. These two articles will grOw
to perfection in. any of the countries
named. Oats can be fed in ithe field
without harvesting to the bdst possi
ble advtmtagc, and they fatten hogs
i s
in the most rapid tuarmer Pease
are the chief dependence in Canada ,
for making pork. Fifty Liu, hels to
the acre have , been raisedlin that
country, though that is an extraord
inary yield, about 30 • bushels being
an ayerage' — e - rop. The vines, after
. the peas-are thrahed olt, are about
equal to clover hay for 'ghee!). Peas
weigh from 697 to 65 poUnds per
, measured.bushel, and have Consider
able-more nutriment that the same
amount of corn. So there -Is no
reason to douptthat the hogs can
•be'raised to good advatita2 l ,e iu all
the._ northern cotintry in question.
Peas will groiv to perfection _ where
oats can be produced: An average
crop of peas Will bring the farmer
nearly if not quite as much as an
average crop of corn, counting the
vines as food for sheep. i
CANADA Tin,ru.s.—J.C. Fe . ly, Mar

to do to clear his Adds. Mn- Crane
—Execute theJhistles by ckitting off
'their heads with a: sharp hue when
ever they appear above, the surface.
I had a patch, and kept a sharp hoe
on the ground, and whenever I was
in that neighborhood I went lor any
and every one that had lifted its head
since my last visit. This is a troub
lesome way, but 'I have found it
cheapest in the end ; • because sure&
Mr. Stewart This , would do for
small surfaces. In large fields, I
would plow three times in hot weath
er, not deep, for that would soatter
-the roots, and make matters worse,
_ but just'enough to cut off the tops.
If the plants are deprived of breath,
.as they are when the portion above
the ground is, removed, they must
die. Mr. Bergen—Farmers in a
neighborhood ought to co-operate in
this war against thistles, eiae individ
nsl effort will in a great Measure be
thrown away. Thistle seeds are
light, and when there is a stiff breeze
they don't stop for line knees.
