Young cabbage plants, after be ing transplanted, are frequently „put off at the, stem by a black ink' which lodges in the ground.Vhen ever that is observed„ search around the root of the plants, cut off, and you 'IW - ft(' the grub a quart rof an inch under the surface, and s kill it. If it is not there, it will be, on the plant next to it, and near by there will be another. They are always in pairs and near to] each other. .There is a small-black flea in vast numbers, which eats oft the leaves of young cabbages,; both when they have come from 1 seeds and after . being transplanted. If the plants are lightly dusted. over withfresh slacked lime for two mornings, while they are we with der, the lime will kill or - drive them off and the plants will tltrive. There is a greenish, meal,* louse that attacki cabbage when h!alf, or nearly full grown, frequentlicover ing, the whole-plant. A dusting . : of fresh. lime, for twotuornings over the plants while wet with - clew, will kill all the intruders. A large, green grub, with tack bands around, its body, which de vours the leaves of earrots, leelery, parsnips parsley. It is slow in motion, and ean.be . gathered with thh hands and killed. All kinds of fruit trees i should have their stems .washed now with a strong solution of carbolic soap and water. It will keep off borers and cut-worms, and if the heads of the trees are syringed with weak er solution of the carbolic slap and water, inseets will not be rapt to attack them. Another syriliging of the heads of the trees, afer the fruits are set, may keep loft' the " cureulio " from plum and i • peach trees. The cause of failures in keeping off insects is that remedies are not persevered in a sufficiently long time. A man standing upon a pair of steps ten feet high can syr inge over trees twenty feet W. FEEDING POTATOES To Ilor.sE.— In _Germany where potatoes are so much cheaper than grain, the ex: periment has been repeatedly tried of feeding horses - upon : the—at least, in part; .and this as we under: stand, has proVed quite successful. In one iustance five four horse teams Were kept hard at work and:in good condition on a dayi .rations, for twenty horses of one iand.one:' half hundred weight of hay ; "eight bushels of potatoes, fifty pounds of meal, and a liberal alloWance of_ chopped . straw. The potatoes were steamed, mashed and Inixed with meal. while hot,. and then cOvered up and allowed to remain fori a time, during whiCh they undergo a slight fermentation and evolve a quantity Of carbonic acid. The chopped straw was worked in just before feeding. This trial was continued ifor more than four months, and round to agree - *ith the horses, while at the same time it proved. satisfactory in point of economy. As this- food must be ,sweet and clean, great care is necessary to prevent the vessels in which it is kept from (becoming sour. ---+ .~.-.--- SOWED - Coit • rot PloboEß. There is no .question that farmers have a good deal of solicitude every rem as to the question of sufficient * feed for stock, and when, as was . the case last yea.i, the grass crop is short—the inquary is for Some sub stitute for hay. W,,e recommend the sowing of corn. TwOl crops of it can be raised on tha same piece of land. The Southern born will give a larger yield. than any other. The most important part is the cur ing for fodder. We Understand that Mr. Wakefield of Pittsfield has invented a' plan on which he expects to secure a patent for curing and ventilating2lt is a simple contrivance and consists merely in !erecting a stack pole with holes bored through it,. about . four feet apart. being shorter as it approaches the top. The corn is placed upon .the stack, the cross poles • being .inserted at intervals, which keeps it up so the air circulates through. It can. be -eured so as to make it i fresh and sweet for foo for any length of time. It is a good feed for milch cows' and stock of all kinds like it, and no other yields so as to pay better with as little expense and ; trouble.— The Homestead. __ln small gardens, in the absence o drilling mschines, such small seed'as turnips,&c.,may, e dropped rapibly along the drills without stop ping, by nailinfi or.screwina a small tin cup to the lower end of walk ing cane, and making a hole in the bottom just large enough to allow the seed to escape.
