During the put year considerable missionary work has been done in the lumbering iommunities of this sec. tion of the state. In corsequence of the rapid depletion of timber, new communities are con stantly forming farther ba:k from the main streams and railroads. In these new and remote neighborhoods, a good Dille school is the best and, in in many cases, the only reli gious meeting that can be regularly paintain ed on the Lord's Dar. 11 PLOPLZ AND beiIDPATION In a strictly lumbering community, I bare noVer met with any opposition to the Sabbath school. Families, according to their means, quite cheerfully contrilstite to its support. Timber-men aro sometimes called a " rough and wickeil class of men." In my' Intercourse with them, the past eight years, they have in- variably treated mo with respect and frequent generosity. In proof of their vigorous industry I might state that these white men of the woods, on my raissicn field make round and square timber enough overt' year to fence in the entire State of Pennsylvania, twopnd a half logs high. It will gay the church and the State, for time and eternity, to look ifter the children of such men. UELIGIOUSI,NVANT&' The very situation in which lumbermen and their families are placed; deprives thim of the usual privileges of the 6:repel—lf they are pro perly supplied, some ono must go to them on this special errand. His lulgate Patent Animal Churn Power is the best inclin ed wheel churn power in the world. It is noise loess in running, easy operating and durable— wili last a life time. /t is adapted for churning either by crank or belt, shelling corn, turning grindstone, fanning mill, straw-cutter, or other bard power machines. A PoLioLor BvsriEss.—Tho wide spread influence of American skill and enter prise has outstripped the comprehensions of the'Americans themselves. Tho fabrics of our mills clothe the savages - of both continents. They wrap the loins of Afr:ca, and the tawny skins of South American pampas. Bat wider still are spread the products of our skill In medicines. A late visit to Dr. J. C. Alma Co.'s laboratory and office in Lowol, showed us that the whole serface of the habitable globe pays . its tribute there ;there they cater to and serve the requirements of almost all nations. Their. pablicaiions are in the many tongues that wide- ly severed peoples use. Their letters must be read from and written in many tongues, for which there sit 1 long range of correspondents with the indisi ensible accomplishments for their duties. Their daily mail ofLiall a bushel of letters brings them adviceii, orders and re mittances from the circle of the world. We were overwhelmed with amazement, and our readers would be by an inspictiop of this won derfully extensive, bealth.dealing enterpr:se.— r 1011 :1 Springs (Hiss.) Constrratirr. SEWING MAcausza.—To show what an enormous industry the business of manufac turing and selling sewing machines _has be come, we find by the sworn returns of the twenty-Ave principal makera, that their gross. sales for 1871 amounted to six hundred and six" thousand and ninety-four (606,094) ma chines. Of this large number the singer Manu facturing Co., which heads the list in the ex tent of its auks, Bold ono hundred and eighty one thousand two hundred and sixty (181,290) . machines, being nearly one-third of the entire number, and upward of fifty-three thousand increase on their sales iu, the previous year. We understand that this soiccess is mainly ow ing to the popularity of their new "Family " machine which, in addition - to all the nasal ad vartages, has several new features which, ren der it specially attractive to the masses. In Chicago, it would seem that no other machine has a chance against it, for the Special Belief Committee, after the late diaastrons tire, re port that of the'total number of 2,914 machines distributed, two thousand four hundred and twenty-seven (2,427) were of the "Singer". pattern. The report adds : "The applicant in every case has designated the machine desir ed."
