PILFIADENT, LADIES AND GENTLE MEN: I have come before you this beautiful Sabbath afternoon not to speak to yon about politiCal parties nor about the details of legislation. I come to speak to you, ifpossible, heart to heart, soul to soul, not to denounce, bnt, if possible, to per suade. I come; not to demand, but to plead with every - ono of you. I come to speak for that liberty which Makes us free, that liberty which ele vates body and soul above the thral dom of the intoxicating cup. Have you thought of the terrible strtisties of the census that reveal that there are 400,000 more people to-di ea gaged in the sale and manufacture of liquors than in preaching and teaching? Have you thought that every year 60,000 of our people march voluntarily through a drunkard's life to a drunkard's grave. _ Go to the poorhouses of New York. There are 72,000 Ipertiolll3 in that State supported by the taxes on the people. • And of these 72,000 it has been ascertained that more than one half came to their ruin directly from liquor. Turn to the whole land and there are more than 700,000- in the in the poorhouses of the States and Territories. And if in New York so many families have been, dragged down from competence to poverty, 350,000 in the broad land have been shipwrecked forever by devotion to this monster evil. When that habit was first on them they could have snapped it with infant liana, but now it is like gyve& of iron and steel on ever? , limb. - - Imagine, if you can,that you could change by some magic power this condition of affairs; that yon could restore these fathers to their families; that those now engaged in the manufacture and sale of liquors could become actzal helperli in the development of our resources and in productive industry; and that the millions of dollars now paid annual ly for intoicating drink—which in a few Years would pay your national debt—could be diverted into chan nels of enterprise and usefulness, what a change would this make! I see before me "many distinguish ed in political, social, and business life, and some of them J fear are to day voluntarily enrolled in the great army of moderate drinkers. When you appeal to them to give the force of their influence and example to the .revention of the evil, their answer i: that they have strength to resist hey ? can quit when they please. Half a million of the young, just stepping over the threshold of life, and joy, and hope, who are falling into this evd habit of drinking. What is to be done to stop the ravages of this monster? lam always Sadden ed when no pledge is asked at the close of such a meeting. I know the power there is a pledge. Daniel Webster was one asked what was the most important thought that ever occurred -to his mind. He placed his hand thoughtfully ou his brow, and, after a pause, replied: "Tt,e most important thought that ever occurred to me -is the sense of my individual responsibility to God and man." I know how poor words are to ex press the emotions of the heart that I seek to voice in these words. If I could add anything I *quid refer to the remarkable testimony from the Joliet prison. There are 1;020 peo ple in the State of Illinois who, for violation of the law, are locked up in prisbn as, a penalty for their. crimes. Out of the 1,020 950 signed a petition to the Legislature stating that intoxication brought them to their present unhappy condition,and they begged these representatives of_ the people to sate, if possible, the rest of the citizens from their wretch ed fate. Theie are 14,000 people to day languishing under the penalties of the law in this Union of ours for .crimes to whic.h they have been led by the influence of „drink: Can we realize the aggregate of sorrows? LION TAlllNO.—Whatever is the reason, the forest lions are more in— telligent and teachable than those bred in confinement. The lion-tamer begins by taking the feeding of them into his own hands, and so gets them to know him. He commences feed ing them from the outside of the den, and then ventures inside, at the same time carefully keeping his face to the animal, and , avoiding any violence, as it rouses the dormant devil in the beasts. Getting up to handle -the lion, the tamer begins by stroking him down the back, gradually work ing up to the head, which he begins to scratch, and the lion, which like the cat, likes friction, begins to rub his head against the hand. When this familiarity i4well established, a board is handed 'in to the trainer, which, he places across the den and teaches the lion to jump over it, us ing a whip with a thong, but not for the ,purpose of punishment. gradually this board is heighten ed, the lion jumping over it at every stage, and then come the hoops,. etc., held on top of the board - to quicken the beast's understanding. teach' the animal to jump over the trainer, the latter stoops along' side of the board, so that when the lion clears one he clears the other, and , half, a dozen lessons are ordinarily about sufficient to teach this. To get a lion to lie down and allow 1 the tamer to stand on him, , is more difficult. It is done by flicking The beast over the back 'with a small " tickling " whip, and at the same time pressing him down with one hand. By raising his head and taking hold of the nostril with one hand, and the under lip and lower jaw with the left, the lion, by this great pressure on- nostril and lip, loses greatly the power of his jaws, so,that a man can pull them open and put his head inside the beast's mouth, the feat, with which Van Am= burg's name was; associated. It costs more_ to cook poorly than to make food good and palatable.. If a woman runs liome from a neighbor's just in time to throw a pie together, bake it, and bring it to -the dinner t able hot, she commits a great offence against the health of her family.. If a man has only an hour to go home, get his dinner and return to business, it. should _be ready for him promptly on time or else, he will eat very hot food in the greatest • baste, and start off for a rapid walk, all of which is very bad, and will ' soon show its effects upon the strongest man. When her husband gets peevish, low spirited and forgetful of the lit tle acts of love and kindness he taught her to expect-in days agone, a woman who is such a housekeeper need not sit in the twilight and won der at sad changes. Dyspepsia is not conducive to ten= . der thoughts of happiness. THE PLANET Man.—A globe of the planet Mars, on which lands . an& seas. are, depicted as upon a terrestial globe, has been exhib ited before the Astronomical Society of 'England. By far the largest portions of these lands and seas are laid down as well-known entitles, respecting :which no more doubt is left among' the astronomers than is felt by geographers concerning the oceans of our own globe. To the land and seas, developed in the planet, are applied 'the names of those astronomers whose researches have added to our knowledge on the subject. Each pole of 'Mars, it seems, is capped with ice, which varies in extent - according to the progress of the seasons, and around each cap is a polar sea. Asst Anson, Mich., Dec. 7, 1871. - WAtuno.—Walking briskly, with an exciting object or . pleasnrable in terest ahead, is the most healthful of all forms of exercise except that of encouragingly' remunerative, steady labor in the open , air ; and yet mul titudes in - the city, whose health urgently requires exercise, seldom walk when they can ride, if the dis tance is a mile or more. It is worse in the country, especially with the well-to-do ; a horse and , carriage must be brought to the door even if less distance have to be passed.. Under the conditions first named walking is a bliss; it gives animation to the mind, it vivifies the circulation, it paints the cheek and sparkles the eye, and wakes np the whole being physical, mental, and moral. We know a 'family of children in-this city who,' from thenge of seven, had to walk two miles to school, winter and summ ; whether sleet, or storm, or rain or urning sun, they made it an e.l ambitio never to stay away from school on acount of_the weather,-and never to be "late" and . one of them was heard to boast that in seven years it had never been necessary to give an "excuse" for being one min ute behind time, even although in winter it was necessary to dress by gaslight. They did not average two days' sickness -in a year, and later they : thought nothing of walking twelve miles at a time in the Swiss mountains. Sometimes they would be caught in drenching rains, and wet to the skin ; on such occasions they. made it a point to do One thing, let it rain, and trudged on more vig orously until every thread . was dry before they reached home.—Hall's Journal of Health. LOST WOMEL—There- is, a whole sermon of Christian charity' and un defiled goodness in the following lines-from the . pen of Mrs. Burleigh. They refer to a subject of the gravest importance, and if every mother and sister in the - land would view the matter in - the light in which it is here depicted, who can doubt the bless ing that would flow_ from a - .practical application of the ideas advanced. She says "Has it ever occurred to you what a commentary upon our civilizatiOn are these lost women, and the atti tude of society toward . them.? A little child strays,from the home inclosure, and the whole community is on the alert to find the wanderer, and re store it to its mother's arm ' s -What rejoicitig when it is found; what tear ful- sympathy, what heartiness of . congratulation. There ate no harsh comments upon poor, tired feet, be they ever so miry, no reprimand for the soiled and tern garments, no lack of kisses for the tear-stained face. - But let the child be grown to womanhood;, let her be. led from it by the scourge of want—what hap pens then? Do they provide all pos sible help for ler return, or if she turns.of her own motive, do they re ceive her with such Idnciness, and delicacy as to secure her • against wandering again ? . Far from it. At the first step she is denounced as lost—for, echo friends and, •relatives —we disown you ; don't over, come near us to disgrace us! Lost! 'says society, indifferently.
