For cleaning hair-brushes, etc.,sim

when they are cleansed, rinse them
in cold water, and stand theni in

TILE SUNFLOWER AS A . DIgINFEC
,varr.—The.fir itar Woclienblatt
has published an article by Di. Val
entine,_ of Frankfort, who gives
Many facts to show that the sun
fl3werlbas the property of purifying
-- rii -- leden with marsh miasm, absorb
ing- ; i'if - great quantity of moist and
-noxious gases, and inhaling an ozo
nized, oxygen - . The Plant, it is said,
has proved itself particularly useful
in this respect in the neighborhoods
of Washington and Philadelphia
where its, cultivation has rendered
whole quarters healthy tu2d' feaver
free, which had previously been un
inhabitable by the prevalence of
fearer: A . - Dutchman, Von Alstein,
whose property was situated ón some
flooded lend! on the bank lof the
Scheldt, has planted three lor four
pieta, thirty or forty yards, froth
his house, with the effect of . so mucb
improving the air that for ten years
no one on his property had been at
tacked miasmatic fever, which
continued to prevail on_neighboring
properties, where similar precautions
were not taken. Besides this,as the
French Sanitary Commission lately
pointed outs the sunflower isi a, moat
- useful plant. It yields about forty
per cent. of good oil, the leavee fur
nish an excellent fodder, and the
stem, beingirich in saltpetre and pot
ash, makes 'a good fuel.
•
FARM FOULTRY.—Farmers fre
quently neglect their fowlS, not so,
much from a conviction that they
don't pay as because there aro so
rainy other things to attendto. Yet
oftentimes the labor spent en more
pretentious affairs is not as profitable
as that devoted to poultry Of course
much- depends on locition and the
market. A flock of fowls such as is
,usual on fartas, will in most situations,
if 'rightfully managed, yield more in
value annually (either gross or net)
than a good cow. But no farmer ex
pects that a cow can be tended a
year and [ fodder raised, cut, and
housed, withonht considerable work.
Fowls, if allowed their freedom, may ,
be managed with much less than
when thanithey aro yarded, but in
any case a great deal of time must be
spent in raising chickens in sufficient
cumbers to keep the ranks of the
laying stock always mainly filled
with birds not old, is indispenSable
to success. It should be remember
ed that eggs - are more profitable
than table fowls, except in case of
early chickens. '
