IS@I. Ma. Byron : I have a query
for the honorable judges of our courts.
Suppose a persoi becomes a member of a
Good Templar or other temperance organiza.
tion. In so doing he-takes a "solemn obliga
tion" on his "sacred honor," "to abstain from"
and to "discountenance the use and sale of in
toxicating drinis." "Suppose after taking such
nn obligation, (a life-long pledge), such person
signs a petition for a tavern license, well know
ing that the clause "to sell spirituous liquors "
is contained in that license—that the License is
in fact a legal privilege to sell drunkard-making
drinks; is Such . a person, after such an act of
perfidy, to be considered in the eyes of the law
as a repntable, respectable, honorable, trust
worthy, reliable, or legally moral member of
the community?
Now, certain censorious (?) people insist that
such a course of conduct proves that the person
is a liar, a would-be perjurer,, and a thoroughly
disgraceful character, worthy only of the con•
tempt of honoiable persons. Aro they correct
in.tbeir judgment of such an individual,. or
does he exactly fulfill the conditions of respect
ability and morality required for liquorrlicense
petitioners. Has morality anything to do with
the subject matter of such petitions? Will hon
est, honorable, right-minded citizens sign such
petitions?
Furthermore, what is the legal definition of
the respectable, orporal in chsracter ?
Please satisfy the interrogations of
April 15, 1872.

A. H. Wool,
zi*.- Ey: IWOUTI:11 : As there is
some little stir in regard to the candidates for
the various offices in this county, I wish to say
to the people that as my name was brought be
fore the public last year, as a candidate for
Representative., (but owing to an agreement
with Mr. Buck, I did not go into the Conven
tion, against the general usage or custom), now
as the field is again open, I would that I
offer myself as a candidate for that office at the
coming election, subject to the decision of the
Republicans of this county. Yours truly,
J. 0. Dawes.

TAILOIL—In Pittston. April 7, 1872,.
Tiylor, aged 87 years. 8 meths and 11=11
The death of such a Dian as Ms. Minna, de
mands more than a mere notice. He was the
youngest sob, who reached manhood, of - one of
the historic families of Wyaltuiing. His father,
Major Jo= TATUM, one of the early settlers ID
the place, was for many years one of the most
prominent men in the community, and for
more than forty years held either the office of
Desoonvr Ruling Elder in the old Presbyterian
Churph. His motherwas the grand-daughter
of Aiwa Yost, who came to Wyalnsing in 1773,
and was the first captive taken from this valley
in the Revolutionary war: Her father, Capt.
Artoz.sau Buct, was slain in the far famed bat!
tie of Wyoming, when she was an infant
three months old. Mr. Tea ors was tholl eon
of the links which connected our history with .
the Present. Inheriting the homestead, he
succeeded in largo measure to the prominent
place his father occupied in the church and the
community.
His industry and pffseverence knew no
bounds. idiot his eaterprisei were prosecuted
with engin' ehing energy and persistence, and
were generally crowned a ith success. Hisjudg
meats, formed with intelligent deliberation,
were sound end had great weight with all who
knew him. His integrity was unquestioned,
and he stood above all suspicion of meanness. .
Ills generous hospitality, ready anti genial con
versation and unaffected kindness, secured for
him a large circle of warns friends.. Where he
was beat known ho was moat loved and respect
ed. In the family circle his qualities of mind
and heart were displayed in all their ixzelleme.
To these virtnei of his private life viers added
that rare quality of a.genCrous support of pub
lic enterprises without aspiring to be a leader
in them. TIC was not only the staunch defender
a good morals, but an humble, faitliftd Chris
tian, and when at home his seat was rarely va--
eint in the sanctuary. Ho was for forty years
a member, and for nearly twenty-three years a
Ruling Elder in the Presbylerian church, whose
doctrines ho loved and whose interests •he pro
meted, ,
HO was from home when strict AN with his
last isickne.ss, bet his family and kind friends
ministered to him until the gun-set hour of the
' Sabbath day, when he e..tercd upon that eter
nal rest which remaineth for the people of
Clod. His remains were taken to his beautiful
home on tthe Wyalusing, from which a Irge
company of neighbors and.friends bore them
to their burial. ,
"There is a land where every pulse is thrilling
With rapture euth's sojourners may not know;
Where heaven's repose the weary heart is
And peacefully life's time tossed currents flow.
Far orit of sight, while yet the flesh enfolds us,
Lies the-fair country where our hearts *bide,
And of its Wei Is nought more wondrous told us
Than these few words, 'I shall be satisfied !'"
At a meeting of the session of the Second
Presbyterian Church of Wyelasing, held April
11,1873, the figlosing minute was adopted:
Wagezas, It has pleased the Great 'Bead of
the Church to remove by death oar beloved
brother in Christ, Bascom Taylor,' a &hag
Elder in this Church, we would record our tes
timony to the many virtues of his privite life,
his exemplary Christian character, his unfalter:
mg fidelity to truth and righteousness, his deep
interest in the church of Christ, his unswerving
loyalty to the Muter, and his forwardness,
both by precept and example, in promoting the
Becteemer's kingdom.
While wo lament our loss, we have the assu
rance that he has gone to bo "forever with the
Lord." We would hereby take admonition to
increased faithfulness in the Mister's service.
To his bereaved family we tender our heart
felt Christian sympathy. and commend them to
the sufficient grace of our Almighty Saviour.
