Getting
Draught Stook Beady for Spring
1 ~.._...
Whether we shall have a late or
an early spring is a question of fu
ture, solution, brit whether early or
late, levery good , farmer is, or ought
to bo aware of - -the fact that when
spring fairly oPens, there will be
"lota of work," for him and his helps
to perform. Now there is an' old
adage which reads :1" forewarned is
to be forearmed .'" The farmer Nilic•
losea sight of the important fact that
one-half of the, comfort, 'ease and'
economy With Which farm work is
pdrformed depends upon the method
of preparation for doing it, is one of
that plass who always , stand in their
own light.- A leading question with
the farmer ought to be, "are, my
horses in proper condition for spring
work? " andlif he is prudent he will
think over his winter method of feed
ing and carefully examine them as to
flesh, and other particulars which
will naturally suggest themselves as
soon las he dons hi thinking cap,and
goes Ito work in r earnest.
Let me remind him in advance
ir
that :very much of he thinking pow
er of ; the horse or x depends upon
his weight. A lig t horse must sup
ply this power by asting muscular
action, therefore, every pound of
sound flesh thatcan be put on your
horses in the wintnr is so much add

:Wherever pruTaTiTig has been neg
lected np to this erne, - it should now
be performed to snve bleeding at the
cuts. But better no prunning than
bed prunning. Different species of
plants require different modes and
times - of prunning Grapevines and
all ornamental climbing vines, make
rapid •grOwth during the early season
of growth andralke a greater ntun
ber of roots than they can mature,
hence in spring there are many dead
roots to he cut out: When the plants
cover the allotted space for them, the
live roots have all V) be shortened,so
as to make the pli.nts look tidy ; and
that also promotes greater quantity
of blossoms; and, the blooms are bet
ter displayed and are more - fragrant,
they knit more plenteously and the
fruits are better ipened and better
flavored.
Fruiting trees need the branches
t
thinned but so th to the sunshine and
air will get into the hearts of the
"trees. When the ,trees are , too. much
extended, or are growing too luxuri
antly, the - ends of the , branches are
cut t , fl . a few inches or a few feet, ac
cording to the spread of the trees.
Stone fruits seldom need branches
thinned out, but they are all benne
fitted by the ends of the branches
and 'twigs being, cut off, say from ap
inch to a foot cut oft that is called
" shortening in prtuaning." We have
seenia wonderftil renovation "of old,
decaing fruit Itliees within a few
years back, -upon the- wealthy estate
of General Pleaspnton, near rhila
delphiar,by pranging, scraping and
washinglhe stems, and part of the
brariches, and di ' ing and manuring
around their ro ts. The trees are
now , -in' a most t rifty and fruitful
state, and inihe I' full prime of man
hood, " as it is called.
In prunning Shrubbery, all the
species 'hose blooms. are. produced
on top, as the lilac,' should only have
the slickers cut out and the branches
thinned ; those whose blooms come
' out upon the side of the shoots, are
cut on top to shorten and make them
more bushy.--E.t r .

THINS ABOUT THE vrABDEN Now.—
llow often havel we commended to
those having sufficient ground for a
garden, and especially farmers, to
pay increased attention to this im
portant ' appendage of family com
fort. Farmers, ELS a rule, are entire
ly too careless about- their whole
minds being placed upon their fields,
crops, stock, &c. The women would
in t most cases be Competent and glO-
ly willing to take charge of a large
portion of the labor necessary to the
proper cultivation of the garden, if
the men would prepare the ground
to their hands. Indeed it is a fact
that those whoparsue the cultiva
tion of.the soil ras their business,
rarely enjoy garden products in per
fection, just because they appear to
insist upon the error that they don't
Now is the time to think about
how. Abe garden can be enlarged and
the number and quantity Of the crops
increased. ' The Staff can also be got
ready for the additional fence, and
the fence itself er3Cted as soon .as the
weather- ill permit.
The little hot-beds- in which to
raise your 'tomato; cabbage and egg
plants, should nbw be repa ired and
got ready for dowing the seed as
soon as the thite rurives. One thing
