Effect of Cold on Mich Clown.
. .
The extrem sensitiveness of the
mammary km tions in cows to the
influences of ocild,fatigue, excitement,
unpleasant oders, 'etc:, is surprising.
We have been greatly interested in
observing j the effects of cold upon
the milksceretion as seen in the herd
of cows uponthe farm at - Lake side.
iit
During the Oast suriuner,in the nt
days in July and August, the ani els
resorted to the lake to 'drink, and, af
ter slaking their thirst, they Nfriuld
wade into thee water, . and remain
sometimes an hour or two, with legs
half immersed. This habit it way
found invariably diminished the flow
of milk at night, and in order to
learn the extent of the diminution
careful observetions were made. It
was ascertained that rtanding in the
water an hour diminished the flow to
the amount of eight or ten quarts in
a herd of thirteen cows. The loss
was so great that whenever they re
sorted to the water they were driven
away to the pasture again at once.
We have-,learned that from simply
turning the herd into ' the yard upon
a cold day in whiter; and allowing
them to remain fifteen minutes, the
flow of milk was diminished to a se
rious extent, and consequently the
Animals are not allowed to leave the
warm stable during the entire win
ter, except .for a brief period upon
warm sunshiny days. Water is
brought directly from a well into the
barn, and the dr nking vessels are
arranged so that thennimals have to
racivjbnt a step or two to supply
their wants. ": The nature of the we
. ter supply, and conveniences of ac
cess, are most important points in'
_ the management of milch cows. A
draught of ice-cold water, taken by a
cow in the winter, cuts. short the
milk :yield for the day , from one to
two pints. Well-water drawn into
vessels, and allowed to stand a few
hours covered in the ,warm barn, has
its temperature -
.raised- several de
grees, and this practise should be
f ,
adopted by all thrifty farmers. 'lt
would undou tedly pay well to slight
ly_warm the water, but this is at
te,nded with considerable inconven
ience where large herds are kept, un
less Steam ajparatns is. used. The
influence of ti cold current of air, and
• cold drinking water, upon cows in
milk, is not 9f a transient nature ; it
extends for e longer period than a
day or a week. Many fine animals
are ruined by careless exposures eve
ry year,and self-interest and feelings
of humanity should 4 prompt all cow
owners to ke ep diligent watch over
their welfare and comfort.
Cows iii milk ere 'often injured by
rapid driving from pasture by heed
less boys and unthinking men. They
should nevel . be urged_ faster than a
walk. Gen leness and kindness of
conduct toward cows have a wonder
ful influencelnpon the milk-pail, and
also upon the progeny of the ani
mals. A bad-tempered irascible man
ought never, to be allowed in a sta
ble. A man who will kick a cow in
a passion, might himself to be kicked
into the barnyard, and prohibited
from again eowing -in contact with
the noble animal. The right person
placed in charge of a herd Of twenty
cows which cave been badly manag
, ed, will in one month raise the lacteal
products so that the increased cash
receipts. will pay, his wages: This is,

plainly that they are CUperiCir to any other glasses
In the market.
The majority of Spectacles. (mostly imported) and
no matter how ant the frames, contain but a poor
mid worthless article of glasses, (generally cast or
preisedi) they are made to be sold only, without
any maculation respecting bement to the eye, and
therefore the great complaint of poor and weak
sight. Thailand' are using glasses now which tire'
and fatigue the eye. where tneobjects get dim after
short usage, or require an intensely strong light
and therefore destroying the sight. which, were they
properly suited, would be preserved a life time.
The advantages claimed tor the Congsee Convex
Glasses are the following': •
The Lenses are ground,of the beat material. pure
and hard. and made only for optical purposes, they
ate therefore not liable to get scratched or dim.
They confer abrillnutt . and di.tir , ..Pos of vision

They are ground mathematically true to the con.

nature. and shape of conic*, of the eye. therefors

- That the lenses are centered correct Into the frames.
• They can be used longer than any other glasses
without changing to a higher power.
The frames are made strong and durable by erpo.
