II II II II lIIMM TEE 000011 D GRAPE. Objections are< frequently made to the ConOrd grape, on account of its acidity. This is very mil; Mama ed for by the fact that too much' ruit is allowed to grow upon the vines. - The idea 'sometimes_ advanced, that the vine of fruit should not be pruned at- all, has been proved incorrect by ,the experiature of the most practical vine dressers. This variety has been fully - tested as a table grape, and its superior merits have been demon strated If it is properly cultivated it is the best for general culture, and takes the lead in vigor ,and adapta bilityref any that is now grown in the open air in this section of the country,,.' Vines that have been planted four years, and are perfectly healthy and vigorous, will, itrig — htly pruned, bear from forty to sixty brumes of grapes annually. One-half of the clusters - should be removed soon after the fruit sets. By this method the fruit will ripen , some two or three weeks in advance of vines upon which all of it is allowed to grow. -Older vines will produce similar emits under the same treatment. TO improve the flavor of the: fruit place it on earth enware in a well ventilated cellar for several weeks. By this means its acid properties will be changed,, and it will then have more of the saccha . rine mitter, which is a most desira ble quality in fine fruit. The grapes can in this way -- - L e kept perfectly - fresh for two or three months. It will be found thit this grape can be grown in this manner with a fair prespect of profit to those who cultii'ate it for the market, as its -val ue would t be greatly increased ; and it would , find a quick 1 sale to those who are usually inclin d to pay a fair price for choice fruit rather than purchase that of an i ,ferior quality at a cheaper rate. Herr: then, is one important requirements-to grow first class fruit = brit:v.:cr. or HEAT ON PLANTS.— The result of a recent investigation by Bialoblock, in rega d to the influ ence of the warmth of soil upon the development of certain cultivated plants, is summed up Eby him in the following words : The influence of warmth of the soil is made manifest in two directions ; in the shortening or lengthening of the period of vegi tatidn, and in affecting the external form of the plant : the acceleration of growth of vegetation occurring principally in the earlier periods. With an ascending. temperature of "the soil, vegetation is forwarded up to a,certain point. From the mo ment, however, s:,len this point is reached an increase of temperature in the soil actually retains growth. The inarium point of favorable tem perature of the soil varies for differ ent plants; but the maintenance of a constant temperature' has for its re sult a more vigorous- growth of the plant experimented on. The extreme limit of a constant temperature of the soil at which a growth of the roots can still take place, we may as sumo tole below, but very near 140 F. Aground temperature of fifty F. barely : allows 'plants to fulfill com pletely all - their functions of life and conditions of development. An in creased ground temperature has no special influence; upon the absorption of uutritionsmatter hrotign the roots, and the accelerated growth re sulting from din increase of heat is usually acconipanied. by a greater . percentage of water in the plant: , ROOT . OR TOP GRArrED . TREES.- We have read nearly all the arguments offered for and. against the employ ment of yottn - g seedling apple trees for stocks, but failed to see any good —reason why they were nkt equally as valuable as though thef were several feet high instead of inches. We have worked many thousand of such stocks with our own hand ; also - grafted large numbers of trees standard high, but give the preference to what are called reot-grafted trees. There is certainly as much likelihood of the seedlinc, stock being tender as 'there is. of 'the variety worked upon it, hence the less there is of this tender stock the better, and if it is all buried undef ground and protected, the less' liable it is to injury. . Of course we do not believe that the lateral roots from large seedlings, or other trees, should bo employed for stocks, as some 'men have been accused of using (although we doubt 'if it was ever done to any considerable extent) ; but the straight perpendicular, or main root, of thrifty seedlings should be used. Nurserymen Will not be too honest, but we think as a rule, they are in this respect equal to their accusers.--Rural New Yorker. GRAHAM Grits FOR BiEMCFAST.—Er ery-family should have a set of. Gra ham tins, and know how to use them. Have 'a hot fire, set . the., tins on the stove, put a small piece of lard in each tin. While it is getting hot mix -the batter; for each six tins, 1 egg beaten very light, 1 cups of sweet milk. Graham flour enough to make a stiff batter; drop the batter into the hottest tin first ; be sure to have each tin-hot before filling;--set in a hot oven. They should be done in twenty minutes, and if eaten immedi ately are very nice ; though made in this• way, they are quite good cold. FOR COLORING COTTON OR WOOLEN Goons.—One half pound of sugar of lead, dissolved in boiling water in pound bicromate of potash dis; solved in a vessel of.wood; dip first in the lead water, thenin the potash, until it is the shade desired for the yellow. Blue.—One ounce of prus slate of potash, 1 tablespoonful of oil of vitriol, 1 of copperad, in a brass kettle with sufficient water to cover the goods. Bring-to o boil, put in the goodsforftfreen minutes stirring often. The above is for 5 pounds. To PICKLE MEAT IN ONE pAy.--roe a tub nearly full of rain or river wa ter, and put two pieces of thin wood - acrossit, and set the , beef on them, 'distant about an inch' from the wa ter. Heap as much salt as will stand on your beef, and' let it remain twen tV-fout hours;= then take = the meat Off and boil it, and you will find it as salt us if it had been in pickle for six weeks the water—having drawn the Await completely through the beef.— The Fore6ier's Monthly Journal. Mrscs Pic.—Six pounds of currants, three pounds of resins stoned, three pounds of apples chopped fine, four pmmds,of suet, two pounds of sugar, two pounds of beef, the peel and juice of two lemons, three piiita3 of rid' boiled Cider, half an ounce of mixed spice. • Press , the whole in a deep pan when well mixed. LONDON 1.110 LID .911)1111179 GLASS 10U 7/77.JA OR The Concave Convex Crystal Spectacles, made by the above institute are now a long time before the public, and the rapid and increased demand for them combined with the =universal acknowledgment of their clearness in vision and ease to the eye, shows plainly that they arc superior to any other glasses in the market. The majority of Spectacles, (mostly Imported)-and no matter how fine the frames. contain but a poor and worthless articie;of glasses,(generally cast or pressed;) they are made to be sold, only, without any' calculation respecting benefit to the eye, and therefore the great 'cotnplaint of poor and weak sight. Thousands are using glasses now which tire and fatigue-the eye, where the °Wets get dim after abort usage, or require en Intensely strong light and therefore destroying the sight, which,'were they properly suited, would be preserved a life time. The advantages claimed for. the Concave Convex Crystal Glasses are the following The Lenses are ground of the best material, pare and hard. and made only for optical purposes, they are therefore not liable to get scratched or dim. They confer a brilliancy and distinctness of.viaion not found in any other &Lys. They can be used equally well by day or candle light without tiring or fatiguing thoeyea. They are groUnd mathematically, Mae in the con cave conv"x mirror: according to the philosophy of nature, and shape of cornea of the eye, therefore asaiating natnre only, instead of forcing it. That the lenses are centered correct into the frames. They can be need longer than any other glasses withoutchanging to a higher power; The frames are made strong and durable by expe rienced workmen and warranted to give satisfaction. WALA—CEIAMBERISS.
