Purpose to be t a gerrythander to keep
the Republican party out of power
in the Senate for the next ten years.
The session of the Legislature was
prolonged for weeks to accomplish
this unfair object. The considga
lion of the apportionment bill -was
utterly neglected in the Senate, ;and
no business of any kind allowed to
progress until Mr. Wallace: and his
friends had received what they "be
lima the power to give the
.minori
ty, a control of the - Senate. ) : There
was no attempt at concealing this
purpose. The work to accomplish it,
was done openly and boastingly, as a
means of '"giving the Radicals a taste
of what they might expect in the fu
ture." But what has been the result?
The snare which was thus set to en
trap the Republican party, and in
the very districts where the Democra
cy were most sanguine of success
they have, been everwhelmingly de
feated. They have lost a prize to se
cure which they resorted to . every
corrupt invention, and the prece
dents they made during the madness
.and intolerance of their brief hour
of power, are destined to prove their
worst punishment. 'Already the De
mocracy are protesting that ari uta-'
fair Congressional apportionment is
contemplated by. ',the. Republican
leaders in The Legislature. • Why?
Simply because the guilty party now
fears retaliation.
_After the unreas
onable and unmanly course of the
Democratic majority in the Senate
of last winter, it is imagined Repub
lican control of the same body will
resort to the same acts. But in this
our opponents will be disappointed.
The Republican party never resorts
to official power for purposes of po
litical revenge.- We Thrash our op
ponents at the ballot box, and wield
the power we achieve thereby for
the good of the whole people._ The
Congressional apportionment will be
fairly made, in a manner to secure
just representation, and thus pro
mote the interests of the entire State.
The suspicion that any pther appor
tiOurnent is contemplated, is the con
fession of a guilt on the part of Our
opponents that they intended to do
*hat they now accuse Republicans
of contemplating.
THE FIREY REGION.
MR. EEITOR: I write you this from
Lexington, Michigan. We came to
visit friends, and to spend the days,
of a brief vacation here, and at sever
al other_places in this western region.
We foukid friends at the wharf, ready
and happy to receive us from the safe
passage on the Huron. Scarcely had
salutations been exchanged, when we
were informed that we had come to
firey quarters. We had known of
western contla,grations,and calculated
to visit some of these localities. -and
behold the ruins; and still intend do.'
ing so. But we had selected this
place to bring our family, for visiting
and safety. We turned from the
wharf to behold the most intense ex
citement. Every available - team was
pirt under full force drawing water
from the lake. Tha passitge way was
crowded.. People were ria , thieg to
and fro. Several fires had already
taken place. .Buildings that were
occupied three hpurs ago were now
in ashes. Wo passed by where some
of these stood. A vigilance commit
tee of one hundred -most effective
citizens had been formed; and were
putting in requisition every possible
means of safety. ' Several suspicious
characters have been arrested; and
some of them come well nigh imnie
diate lynching. One man rushed for
the woods, pursued by the citizens,
and in an hour , the entire woods
were surrounded; but I think he will
escape. The women of the entire
village have prepared their household
effects for removal. A guard isplaced
at every street and avenue. *- The
hose of the engine has been greatly
lengthened. Orders have been given
to shoot down any person of doubt
fulinten.sions, that might appear at
any point. If ever desperation could
protect an imperiled place this place
will be protected. And yet at mid
day yesterday; with no immediate
signs of danger in that quarter, sev
eral buildings were iu a moment
wrapped in flames. More than a doz
en villages up along thig coast have
been burned' in part' or whole.
Among them are Forester, White
Rock, Elm Creek, Center Harbor,
Fort Hope, Huron City, New River,
and Pans. • It is said in some cases,
that a village that seemed to stand
securely would be wrapped in fiercest'
flames in five seconds.
It seem almost incredible. Forest'
fires had much to do with this_
vast calamity, but incendiaryisiii
also played its part4The destruction
of property, and tl4e suffering and
loss oflife have been great. , In some
places invalids were partially buried,
._to keep them from baba. , burned;
some climbed into their wells. Many
were driven into the lake, and for
five hours stood id the water up to
their necks; and then could only es
cape being burned by frequently
bathing their heads. And yet 'many
burned to death at' different points.
Hundreds of sufferers have been con
veyed to Port Huron and other places
of safety.
One might think strange that we
should have selected this place to
spend any part of our brief visit in.
But, we were not aware of any 'dan
ger at this' immediate locality .we
came to visit friends here, thinking
our family would be safe at this
point, intending ourself tp visit other
places - of interest through the-west
before our return, and which purpose
we still have. H. limiest.

LETTER FROM WASHINGTON.
Wssaisorox, D. C., Oct-V, 1871.
Mu. Dirron : A more delightful " spell (if
weather" than what weoire now enjoying could
not be desired, and although "the melancholy
days have rome, s the saddest of the year;' yet
'every ono seems to enjoy them with the bright
est and happiest of faces. The warm hazy sun
shine with a moat delicious atmosphere, the
clear blue stow with purple minks, floating laz- 1
fly aboro the 0 771ing splendors of .the forest
the soft autumn winds bearing no longer out
ileir_wings the scorching winds of enmnier, all
tend to make this the most 'pleasant Auld de
lightful season of the year. In fact - the more
melancholy the days the more jolly and mirthi
ful the people become ; - and our goodly city,
now folly awakened from its summer letherr,
"has ono° more assumed an appearance of life
: .
and gladnesa. • -- . •
The theatres and places,of amnsonrc•nt whi re,
during tpe long summer months, the spider
noiselessly wove his web over mimic tower and
palace, and whore rats occuple,l undisturbed
the stage, the boxes, and gallery alike, or ins•lc
nests in the cast-off crown of some Richard or
foaming Othello—have been renovated and re
-fatted, and are now-king with each other in
presenting attractions for the entertainment of
their friends and patrons.
The coming winter promises to he one unus
ually brilliant End interesting - to the ania•zo
ment loving and theatre going people—arising
doubtless from the fact that, while we are to
have the pleasure of looking upon various stirs
and celebrities of the day—while wo are to have
the Opera, the legitimate drama, together with
the Sensational in all its different. phases, we
are at the same time to have especially at the
10ld -national, a combination of:players that .; re
notan absolute disgrace to the profession, the
first we have had in many seasons.
Wo are pleased to learn that the :43 of
giving us a succession of stars without .propc,r
support has been abandoned, and great will be
he rejoicing thereat from the proud occnnrnt
of the aristocratic box, who leisurely scans the
autheneo with his elegant opera glass up to the
youthful and noisy peanut consumer of the gal
lery, whoso interests centered in the closing
PCCIICII of the play, falls auietly asleep murmur
ing to his comrade, " wake mu np srt,en Eirby
dies."
Then we are to have Concerts and Lectures,
masquerade balls, parties and grand Re
ceptions, already-lieralded by the swift winjed
messengers ofgossip through all fashionable
circles to 'those who with eager expectation,
"mark their coming and look bnghter when
they come." And'aside fro'ni all this we aro-to
have those noted sociables given, aline,t
c it r
out number by the several State Ass..cialf:ous
of Washington where in the hiambler war.,s of
life may be found whole brigades of Colonels;
and - Generals, breie't or otherwise. It is sou:;
thing glorious to dud in the morning papers
glowing report's; coined from the fertile brain
Or some faeutiOus reporter, giving detailed de
siriptions of the dress, the style, and the Se1:1-
sill= created, by Mrs. Colonel this, or .1Ira•
General that at such and such a rece•ption ; all
of which is however, perfectly harmless to the
many while it graailes the vanity of not a few.
Thus we find each sphere has its "variety of
vanities," and thus philosophically we learn
that "rich is life."
The long se ssion of Congress. will liring t•nas
of thousands of strangers .among nn, and tl.e
political excitement incident hi the conneg
Presidential eleetion , will have an intluenee not
only on fashion bat on business, r.nd it w:y
safely be predicted that the coming winter in
Washington will bo the gayest and most ex
travagant we have had in many years.
• Among the events of the day,we observe that
the old women of both serer who advocate the
right of ladies to the dealt - ) frapehiso have
made a now and unexpected movement. The
Board of Registration having politely declined
to permit their names to be registered nut
the lists which they are now Making ..up, — the
ladies who. are determined "never to give it np"
have organized and appointed a Board of 111.g
istraticui of their own, who are "to register all
women of proper age desiring to vote at th.
coming election. This la,tzd is to sit daily and
on election day they will Open polls and receive
votes of the so-registered women.. They hive
not, however so far as we have heard, decided
what they will do with the votes when they are
received-
The many temporary re.ddents . of Washing

enjoying at their respective hoittes, a shur t res
pite from their-labors; and have .at—tho same
time been exercising at the recent elections, the
right of suffrage guaranteed 'to all Americr.t
citizens—copperhead arguments to the contra

and are cenfirming the glad tidings which came
before them of the repudiation of Democracy

It is now not unfrequently asaertod that de
mocracy- is dead, and that it must sown pass
away to be known no t morn upon the earth.
Such howeverds not tho fact; nor in,the nature
of things can it ever be. Our political . belief in
