A Mo mm a ( vrry.—By the caving
in of it coat mine near Williesberre,•last week,
a monster cavity Is made in the earth, which
will, prObably, become a pool 'or water, which
will puzzle geologists in moire far off future age
to account for. The Hallenbeck coal mines
caved in with a terrible crash, and we have the
following account by telegraph
These mines have been in an. unsafe condi
tion for some time, and a few days ago the in;
dications of danger became so decided that the
miners concluded to abandon them on Satur
day, which they did but a few hours - previous
to the caving, thereby preventing a horror not
second to the late Pittston disaster.
A.portion of the tools, and implements were
successfully 'removed, but part of mine col ups-. suddenly., filling the vet undisturbed chain
hers with such a powerful rush of air that box
es, tools, cars, etc., were hurled in all direc
tions, while, fortunately, no one was in the
mine, and all farther attempts at removing
them was abandoned. !The mass of mine fell
on Saturday evening, startling the city, Litho'
the occurrence was expected. Sii acres of
ground:fell at once-to e-depth of nearly 200
feet, presenting a terrible chasm, and erecting
great fissures in the surrounding banks) Thous
ands of spectators immediately -flocked -to Abe
scene, notwithstanding the threetening appear
ance of the banks, but no accident occurred.
The mines were nearly worked out, ao the loss
to the company is nut so great as might be. im
agined ; but the minors cliaployed therein will
lege materially, being thrown out of work.

noon last, was received with 'Unfeigned sorrow
by everybody in this place. But few knew of
his sickness, and his most intimate friends sup

or his demise. He had lice confined, to his
room about two weLks with typhoid fever, but
his symptoms were not c‘ipsulered alarming
until after noon on Monday. Mr..ffuttrat was
mie of ,sir moist enterprising and useful citi

which had for its object the prosperity of our

perance cause lie %las anearnest and consistent:

humanity, never spared an effort which

fireman, he was always at the post of duty k and
it u nit improbable that a severe cold contract

early death. As a citizen and business man, he:
was allable and obliging and won the respect df
_all with whom he came in contact. But it was
in the more sacred relation of husband and fa

which doubly endeared Imo to his family, and
Co them lies-sudden death has a poignancy
