his District several terms in the State Legisla
ture. Dnring the war he entered the army, and
- received a colonel's commission. On the return
of peace he settled in ForkSeott, and now has
the reputation of being oao a , the ablest law
yers in the State. On the creation of anew Ju
dicial District, last winter, be Wilfrappainted by
the Governor to the office of Judge of said Dis
trict; Before the expiration !of the time for
whichito was appointed, he resig,ned hii com
mission, and returned to Fort , Scott. At the
present time he is representing thia District in
the State Legislature; and will probably be ap
pointed to fill the vacancy which: will be occa
sioned, on or before the fourth of 3farch next,
by the resignation of Hon. D. I'. LowE, our
present District Judge and fellow townsman,
who was elected last fall to represent this 'State
in Congress:

the people, and has spread rapidly, Particularly
in the last two years in the Eastern States. Its
work and intent are very silar to those of the

ing, succor the untortunate;r care for the rich,
bury'the dead and give sympathy, and material
aid to the widows and orphans of each other.

egalia consists of a military ( hat with plumes,
(a scarlet velveteen sash with silver fringe, an

A. Met.vix, son' of .Capt: I. A. and HELL SA
Rum, died at Wilkes-Barre; Jan. 27, 1871, in
the 24th year of his age. In his early child-.
hood he exhibited unusual physical 'and men
tal powers, but 'at about te i n ',years of age his
physical strength was prostrated by inflamma
tory rheumatism, so that el was an extreme
sufferer for some throe or our years ; and yet
at sixteen he commenc d 'teaching district'
school with success. Hegraduated at Eastman
Commercial College, Poughkeepsie, 'N.Y., and
at the time of his death wis principal cf a gra
ded
school in Wilkes-Bari t, and was elected to
still higher polition.
He prOessed faith in Christ at the age of six
teen, was baptised by El6r Krim, and lived a
consistent christian ; boesMie a member of : , the
Free Baptiit Church. of Herrick; and died in
great peace. He was, ,uidtersally loved, and
general grnpathy was extended to the likrge
circle of, mourners. - An !immense concourse,
brought to the funeral by some eighty heavily
loaded teams, was evidence of the esteem in
which he was held.' Pour ministers were pres
ent,'all anxious to administer words of comfort

ceased prodding officer and the irreparable loss
