L. McGill, from St. Louis for New
Orleansi was destroyed by fire at
Shixt Fly Bar last night.
The flames spread rapidly,- and the
passengers had barely time to rash
to the bow and plunge into the water , :
before the fire was upon them. • ,
to.r4d to the horor of the. scene,
the weather was intensely cold, and
ninny who plunged into the river
were chilled and sunk. The surviv
ors give imperfect and conflicting re
ports. •
The boat bad been aground twa
days, and had Unloaded two hundred
tons of her' frieght in order to get
over the -bar. A portion of her car
go was coal oil: Just, as the passen
gers were preparing to retire -an
alarm of fire was raised, ,and a gen
eral stampede ensued.
.',.The steamer St. Francies,•near by,
rendered assistance. The Ann White
- brought up 'twenty=, - six- of the crew
and ten passengers, picked up along
the.mhore. It was hoped that ()apt..
Tompkins, and \Vin. McFarland, the
first clerk, were saved, but,the
al of the St. Francis 'to-night gives
little hope lor their safety.
