time-and in all places has decided to
the contrary. If there is a maxim
in
established agriculture, it is that
of therotation of crops, to meet this
very requirement of exhaustion by
the same grain. There are some ex
ceptions where wheat and oats and
doubtless other grains have been rais

success. But these exceptions only

would follow the orthodox rule—the
crops would deterioate if continued

six leaves three, then a certain amount
of matter taken from the soil - leaves
that kind of , matter that much the
less, and if continued must exhaust
it, What are we then to expect from
. t - this very rich land—rich in the quail
' ities to raise a particular grain if rail
please—if cropping is continued, on
and on, will it not exhaust it? If not,
then the common facts of philosophy
- are at fault, and the great Bacon
made a mistake when he laid them as
a basis. Happy the man who can
raise successive crops of any grain,
for he has good land, unusually good
and deep. Bale. him not try to
encourage farmtra to raise crop after
crop of wheat or oats for a long time,
for hecan not do it; they know bet
ter. No; a rotation is good, even for
rich land, to keep it rich. If it can
raise grain for many years, all the
better. But do nottask it and spoil
the good. A few crops• in succession
will do. But if other crops are rais
ed equally well, and in rotation, and
do not trust to the false philosophy
that constant cropping—and with
oats at that—improves the soil or the
crop. There may be, monstrosities
in farming as elsewhere, but do not
trust them. Our-land needs constant
attention to keep Whom going back.
