gine were soon on the ground, and succeeded

The sudden death of Jona P.

Central and Erie R.R. tracks near- Barton. As
they started to return their horse balked, and
Mr. C. got out of the carriage to lewd biro, when
he complained of a neuralgic pant in his leg
and leaned forward to rub it. A moment af
terward Mr. STEADMAN noticed him falling on
las fare, and on going op to him, found that be
was breathing his last. Ito expired without a
groan or a struggle. In hisdeath a family have •

The Grand Jury made a presentment to
Court, thatan examination of the county jail
satisfied them -that it was insufficient for the

It was not thus twenty-five years ago. The
ground was covered with snow. It was drear

Last Saturday we had the pleasure, with some

pair who had seen their family increase by twos
twice before, were presented with a couple of
sons—fine, lusty fellows, to whom the twin girls
clung, as though they wore their firin brothers.
About this time, Rev. trrars PERI pulled
from under the piano a mysterious looking tian
which had been smuggled into the room, and
upon opening it ho took therefrom piece by
piece, and presented to the wondering pair un

beautifully inscribed—
"To Pa and Ma—from their
beside the gifts of other friends.

—and then a gathering around the table ; and
SS we looked upon the luxuries before us we

thou be man given to appetite."
Surely, if chickens and turkeys hide—as they
say they do when they hear the preacher corn
ing—then there will be some Skedaddling among
them hereafter if they hear of a "Silver Wed
ding Extraordinary."
Before the company disp ersed we had the
pleasure, in behalf of the pa reuta, of presenting
to each of the children a low choice gifts. -

and came away breathing a prayer that all who
-composed that happy company may ever have

-.The beautiful weather this fall has been
im
proved by our farmfrs in getting , their spring
work done—many of them ready to sow and
plant. They have also narked their grain, but
ter, poultry, As., and laid in their stock of coal,
groceries and greenback! for the winter.
It has been an unlortunate year for pork
;growers. In the first place there was no " soft
earn" to fatten hogs on, and new there is no
water to scald them in. -Hog-Admen are at a
premium. Pork is at a (list:bunt, and "money
is a hard thing to borrow."
Thanksgiving was duly observed by , eating

of chicken-plea and turkeys.
We regret to say lint some republicans do

On thanksgiving day,1869, Dr. O. Lzwis, of
this place, lost a tamable horse. Thanksgiving
day, 1870, another. This left him again crip
pled for his business. The Doctor is along
in years, with a large family, and- hardly pre

the Bradford Argus,' a statement ptiiporting
to have come from a "Mr. Ram, Who visited
Sheshequin last week, reports an amount of
whisky-guzzling there truly disgusting." Those
who knoWthe ueantifal valley of filieshequin

were, hemmed m by the beautiful Susquehanna
river on the west,- and on: - the north, east and
south by mountains, and that the people are
intelligent, industrious and moral. On the
evening referred to, some fast young men, who
do not live in the said valley, had on that day
visited the city of a thottsondifics, and imbibed
freely of its benzine; and visited Mr. llama's
perfirmance at the Valley House, where they
expressed the natural language of said . benzine
to the disgust of all present. A few evenings
subsequent, some half-ibiven young Americans,
from Waverly, visited our valley, with each a
pocket revolter partially filled with explosive
whisky. They first made their appearance at
