SITUATED Nor Ali ADJECTITE.--

And died from mere opinion otraight. •
—Buller.
Such, we fear, W. - Editor, will be thetate';of
"Ax Ow Twain,'-"Q is viz Column," and
several others. They seem joined to their Glob.
S'ome, perhaps, would say, "Let them alone"
—but such is not mewling to our opition. - . -
We want them to understand that 'there are
more things in Hes aid On earth, than they,
in their philosophi , speculations, ever dream
ed.
It mail be a man than Pythagoriti ever -
was, that would Ind us to take any man's
" ipse di.rit"—his say so in matters of
opinion. That man to be pitied who will not
investigate for .-
" - _.-rldere assertion °ants to but little. We
ought to know w we affirm, and what we
are &bent. Those tell us that "situated"
is nothing but an atctiveinthosentence, "To
wanda is situated the Susquehanna," have
not brought a singlejproof in iupport of their
position. Oh, yes t the teachers, it seems, took
a vote at Towanda that "situated" seas an ad
jective. That proves nothing.
The church of Rome once took a vote, in sol
emn conclave, that the earth did not revolve on
its ails. Galileo said it did. Now, Mr. Editor,
who was in the right—Galileo or the priests of
Rome?
Well, Water= has been appealed to, in sup
port of a "situated "Towanda, and the " where
of" owners of that mountain castle.
11311
But Inbater even does not say that situated
was never used as s verb In any case. Ile mere
ly says nothing whatever about it. And we
should bear in mind that there are a goodmany
things of which WEBS= does not tell us. Be
tells us nothing about the rings of Saturn, the
moons of Jupiter, or of the thin that swim in
the Susquehanna river. And because he is
lent on those nutters, are we to infer that there
aro no such things?
Wzss - rza, in defining- the word vital, gays
nothing about its over being used as an inter
jection, and yet it is often an interjection—as in
the sentence, "But what ! is thgservant a dug ?"
&c. Those who say thero , rtre no interjections
in the language must settle it with WtaisrEn,
fur he recognizes them.
WEDS= says notlung about what as an ad
verb, and yet it is often used as such. He says
nothing about Mon as a preposition, and yet
- such is clearly its Mike in the following line
from BruoN's." alszeppa " :
"The wood was past, lwas more than noon."
If we would ascertain to what part of speech
a word belongs, we should seewhat office it per
formsin a sentence. A synonymous word will
often assist us very much in this search. And
hence we maintain with "Fier rrv," that situ
ated, in the sentence Under.consideration, can
not be an adjective for the following reasoner
viz : It is joined with a nenterlrb, and is sy t.
nouymous with the perfect participle placed and
located. One of these words may be, and often
is, used interchangably one for the other—see
Wrzsrar., where he defines tocatefl as placed,
lituated. &c. So; then, if located is here a per
fect participle, so also, is situate and oUtteted,
one as munch as the other.
Consequently, "is located,' placed," and
is situated, are all passivc verbs, or there are no
such, things as passive verbs in the English
language.
.Igaiu : twaiiitain that sittlate is used as a
verb, from the Latin word fioni which sif ?rote,
silttati., and situofrd are derived.
The Latin word is silus (see CliAnns Spin
nymg, page 2781, perfect participle of the verb
s/sio, to be set up, to be made to stand,-tr.
a participle, vitas means sllualt Ole very word
we want, and sibulted comes, of course, by the
additleu of ell), sq, Prme , l,finfteded, buildrd,&c.
Bence came the passive verbs, .is sit/MI/13,
S. I, is phuv+l, ispnmhvi, and is G r. ild4d —and the
sentence, Towanda is pilteryl.4, i.. (I, i,i plelrCr4
