of cows he will purchase. '

Such experiments are worth being
..Made, and made carefully. In no
'other way can you know what you
have in a cow or milk, or what are
buying. In this way also you may
test, the exact nutritive value of dif
ferent kinds of milk from-your cows
very important matter. Farmers
7 may derive much benefit by making
a .few simple •experiments, now and
then. They need not interfere with
any of the regulir duties of the farm;
and nothing but a spirit of habitual
indolence of thought and action will
keep them from doing so. Such ex
periments often lead to important,
and evoke interesting and instructive

Preparing Poultry for Market.
We fatten the poultry as long as
thought proper, but do not feed them
-for two days before the day of killing,
so as to leave their crops empty, for
when those with full crops are dross-
ed the flesh on and around the crop
becomes blue, and renders them less
salable on this account. Having put
a keen edge on a small-bladed pen
knife, we hang-the fowls np by the
legs;. to strings put up for that pur
'pose. We stick them in,-the mouth
or rather the throat, by putting the
knife in the mouth. It is be to
make a deep cross-cut ; and to bold
the head of the fowl down until it
ceases to strnggle,when it can be con
veyed to some suitable building to
prevent the feathers from blowing
away and they should be picked
while yet warm—of course without
scalding, for that makes them look

the hand at a time. Be careful while
picking the largest feathers that sup
port the wings, so as not to tear the

caalse your pump has failed. By so

neighbor, but you lose money every
time you take your cattle from the
yard. If your pump is old and worn
ctt, INoct a new one at once.
It is poor economy to hitch colts
in the barn floor, where they are lia
ble to get hang with the halter; poor
economy to keep more hogs than you
well feed; and poor economy to feed
meadow hay and straw to sheep, or
barley to horses.
