to supply their customers; :as their
own reputation often angers from
using an inferior quality. There are
several-kinds in the market, but that
known as the Frei& blacking is con
sidered the t best, and is more used
than any other by mancdaetnteril of
finework. Harness biaeking may
be classed among the patent meth
rineseand the emu:try is goaded with
quack Compounds that will sooner or
later rain the leather and destroy the
reputation of any harness manufac
turer that uses them. Two methods
are adopted in order to dispose of
these worse :tbapj useless corn=
pounds; one is to gm it some high
sounding name and selllvery cheap,
"in order that all: may be benefited
ly it;" the other is to -put' it up in
amtkquantities, and efiarg. e a krge
price; under the plea that "the in
gredients used are. very costly and
scarce." .Both wayd meet with sac
seas, and as the article is either Met
-ft:lent or its injurious effects ara not
immediately. apparent years will pats
,before the - public become aware of its
worthlessness. The fact that circu
lars advertising these mixtures con
tain the names of many prominent
men is not always a proof of their
merit. It is best, therefore, that har
nese makers - purchase only of those
klnda that have been long before the
riblie and have earned a reputation,
or that they manufacture their own
blacking. The latter course is much
the cheapest
A good blacking is made of four
ounces , of hog's lard, 16 ounces of
neatsfixit oil, 4 ounces of yellow wax,
20 ounces of ivory black, 16 ounces of
brown sugar and 16 of -water. Heat
the whole to boiling, and stir* it till
it becomes cool enough to handle,
then 'pia it into balls about two inch
es in diameter.
A cheap and• blacking can be
made as follows: Soften two pounds
of glee in one pint of water, dissolve
two pounds of sdhp (castilo is the
best, but most expensive) in one part
of warnilvater.; after the glue has be
come thoroughly soaked, cook it in a
glue kettle, and then turn it into a
hxge.pot over a hot fire and. pour in
the soap water, slowly stirring until
it is well mixed; then add a half
pound of yellow wax cut in• slices.
Let the mass boil until the wax be
comes melted, and add half a pint of
neatafooteil and a sufficient quantity
of lamp black to give it color; let it
boil a few minutes, and it will be fit
for use.
When a harness becomes soiled, it
. can be restored by the use of French
. polish. The ingredients are 4 pounds
stearine, 6i pounds turpentine and 3
ounces of coloring or ivory black.
13eati.he stearine out to thin sheets
I - ` w ith a mallet, then mix it with the
turpentine and subject it to a water
. bath. While heating it. must be stir
. red continually; the coloring matter
is to be thrown in after the mass has
become thoroughly heated. 'lt is
thrown into another pot and stirred
until -it is cool and thick; if not stir
red, the mass will crystalize and the
parts become separated. When used
it must be warmed, and a small quan
tity rubbed on the leather with to
cloth, use but a little at a time and
put. on very , thin.
After it has partially dried, rub
with a silk cloth and a polish will be
produced equal to that of newly var
nished leather. This polish is , also
good for carriage tops, 'straps, etc.,
and will in noway - injure the leat
er.—Hanufacturcr and Builder.
The Profit of Pork Mating.
There is, perhaps, no part of the
farming economy in which farmers
so much vary, as in the manner rind
sipense of making pork. I saw last
winter, at one pork-buying depot, a
farmer whose hogs, although, well
fattened, fell short of two - hundred
and fifty pounds per head, at two
years old; while the spring pigs of
another farmer, Only nine •months
old, averaged over two hundred and
fifty pounds each; and the two-year
olds had been fed in the two years
twice as much raw corn in the ear as
the spring pigs had ever eaten in old
corn meal which was always boiled
with potatoes, pumlins, &c. But the
two-year-olds were of a poor, dwarf
ish breed; born from an ill-kept., lank
sow; while the pigs were Chester
Whites, crossed with Berkshire. They
were born larg e, 'from a well-fed sow;
had large ra tions of buttermilk and
good pasture through, the summer,
and plenty of boilea,'4sld corn meal
and pnmkins, from early in Septem
ber to Christmas. The experiments
of J. B. Laves, of Rothhamsted farm. .
prove that twenty per cent. of the
cooked food fed to pigs, deducting
the water, was stored up in their in
crease. Sheep at - cumulated twelve
per cent.; omen gained only eight per
cent. But his pigs ii=ere neither a
deteriorated, dwarfish breed, nor of
the big-boned, land-pine, porcine va
riety, and his breeding sows were
never stinted in their rations.
To RTMP CELIAES most Femme.—
An agricultural friend, at our sugges
lion, has tried an experiment with a
_cellar of an out-house in which, on
several occasions, veg etables have
frozen, although the ce llar was forti
fied agaiiist frost by a process known
to farmers as "banking." The walls
and the ceiling were pasted ovvr with
four or five thicknesses of old news
papers, a curtain of the same materi
al being also 'pasted over the small
windows at t h e to Of the cellar The
papers were to the bare joists
overhead, leaving an air space be
tween them and the floor. He re
ports that the papers carried his
roots through last winter, thouili the
cellar was left unbanked, and he is
confident that they have made the
cellar frost proof.
We do not counsel the special use
of old newspapers for this purpose.
It is just as well, or better to use
coarse brownpaper. Whatever pa ;
per is employed,it will be necessary to
sweep down the walls thoronghly,and
to use a very strong size to hold the
paper to the stones. It is not neces
sary to prest the paper down into all
the depressions of the wail; every air
space beneath it is an additional de
fence against the cold.—Scienttfic
