This was, perhaps, the fault of the breeder rather than of the breed. The abundance of nu tritious food furnished to the . - young animal induced: an • early maturity,. which led to the general , practice of I;reeding for beef rather than. milk, and to the stiNeq•ctent . neglect:of the I.l:dry qualities. .I%*valuable breed i - well adapted to thiseotintry for I•roducing beef- and they • should -be_ inticiducgi in all parts of . our beat t, - rai.ing country. As. a breed they are eminently died for our soils and climates. They need plenty of feed, and, according to weigh • an d bulk, they require no more th an the native stock. . While commending. the tinrhains, or short-horns, for our country, there are places where other:breeds, as the Ayrshire' and Alderney, will prove more profitable, that is,, where forage and grasses are scarce 'and high in price, or in the mountain ranges, where the herbage is short and diffi cult of• access. In such locations a lighter, nimbler breed thrives, as the Ayrshire - s and _AlderneYs, as these twu breeds are noted for their milk and butter qualities, are preferred in • the Eastern States, ; but when beef is the consideration, the Durhim and atoll-horns are the cattle to raise for profit, and we have at the present time, in this country as fine herds to . select from as in - the world. How to Multi Cuttings Grow - Alludin,g to the manner of -propa gating cuttings, the . dew England Farmer says that it has been ascer tained that a cutting will develop roots much sooner in moist than in rich soil. Bnt the sand cannot main- tain its growth for any length of time. To prepare pots for raising cuttings -they should be filled nearly to the brim with rich garden loam, dark • and porous, not clayed and soggy; then pour in one inch in depth of scouring sand; sea sand will do as well as. the yellow sand. Wet this thoroughly, and place the cuttings, from which all but three or four up per leaves have been removed; close to the side of the pot; the contact of the ware ag,ainst the stem of the cut tins, promotes its growth. Press the wet sand firmly around the tiny stem. .1 great deal of your chance of sue ces in raising slips -or cuttings de • ponds upon this.. - Plant as niany cuttings as the pot will hold, from six- to a dozen, accord ing to the sizo of your pot; when they'are firmly set in sand, two or' three can be inserted in the middle of the pot.. Set them away in a 'lark, warm • plabe for twenty four, or thirty-six ; hours. Thus, cuttings will grow thickly in a hot heti, because the temperature is not dry. 1, 'Their grow,th depends a great deal upon the light, heat and mois . tore. If a..bud is close at the base of a ( ailing it will strike root more easily --is not so apt to decay. The roots ',not from a bud, Wad the lower Town it is the surer your success. When the leaves drop, the plant is commencing to grow;if they wither on the stem, it has begun to. ..decay. By following these directions, no one can fail to grow all kinds of house plants. Roses and all the rarest flowers of the green houses are prop agated in this manner..l The Home_ Nettle. A correspondent of the Oxford Pre-3A writing from Delaware county on this nuisance says: The Canada Thistle (eirsium ar- cease. is harmless .compared with the Horse nettle. I have known the net tle to get a foot hold on two farms in this neighborhood, in both cases Was easily destroyed. In one case it-was smothered out by thick coating of straw or hay, in the other by cutting just below the ground and applying a handful of salt to the .root. But the Horse Nettle (sui moon rarolit-- cuse) whenever it gets well establish ed will remain. Its march is onward. It is plentiful iu Concord, Thornbury, Middleton and Chester. My old friend Mr. Mohan ? , of Germantown; says cut off the top continually, no vegetable can stand that, the root mast die. Any reasonable weed would succumb to such treatment, and I suppose it may thus be pre vented from spreading, but to destroy it is not so easy. I used heven, bugs of salt on - one field. last year., with some advantage but it will take years at the same rate to destroy it. My 'advice to any one who is so unfortu nate as to get it on his farm is: Ev ery time the field is plowed there. is a tenfold increase of the nuisance. Every inch of the root is sufficient to produce a plant, and the roots are cuitecl np in the ground, often spiral ly, waiting for the 'plow to scatter - them about. I know of no method so likely to eradicate - as the free use of salt, but even that-will have to be applied :again and again as new shoots appear..lf all mars would make themselves acquainted with the plant and attack it on its first ap pearance they Might succeed in de , ..iribying it without great cost or la bor.
