t Deaf Year Stook Lc4 Thrifty?
Last sprint I ,bonsht two cows
that had been wintered in the barn-
yard CM htiy and corn fodder without
meal or bran, and as a ccmsequence
were kb:, shedding - . their coats and
had a poor look. As the season ad
canwa, their coats cleaned and the
abundant grass filled them to a re
spectable appearance. Later on,
when the weather became, very dry,
the heat intense, and the flies -tor
menting these two cows' lost their
good . appearance , and their condition
was in marked contrast with that of
,the others , that had been well winter--
When one reflects:, the cause is
apparent; n cow that is wintered lib
erally comes on to grain thrifty
conditioni in ,good fled `
and with
substance in her, that eptd:iles her to
endure the suffering from heat tuld
flies. The padlyvintered cow starts
in a comparatite weak condition, and
though abundant grass makes her
temporarilt - look well, she has not
the substance to enable her to endure
the trials of midsummer and drought.
Now for the remedy; the cow that
has not been fed meal or bran through
the summer. Some will require four
quarts, others eight quarts per day.
The eye of the owner will enable him
to detect which ones needs such feed,
and the quantity !gibe fixed accord•
ing to the resulting condition which
is promptly manifested. It will be
shown later on, that you get in the
incresqed yield of milk, a full and iin T
mediate return for feed.
/There may be many that are un
certain as to what is liberal winter
feed. Our own cows never did bet
ter than last winter, and the feed was
as follows:- fifteen ponnds of hay per
day for each, (feed five pounds at a
time morning, noon and night, with
two feeds of meal, four quarts eacb s
and four quarts of carrots daily. This
meal Consists of a _mixture of one
bushel of corn meal, one bushel pf
ground wheat and three bushels of
course bran. The wheat in grinding,
increases one-half 'in bulk, ' evert
bushel of wheat making a bushel an4l
a-half of unbolted flour. When wheat
costs one dollar and fifty, inchiding
grinding, the ground flour would frost
but one dollar 'per busheL This
makes the cow feed cost about sixty
cents a bushel, or fifteen cents per
day for each cow. To this add fif
teen cents for hay and ten cents for
roots and bedding, and you have for
ty cents per day, or two dollars and
eighty cents per week, as the cost of
. her help. It would appear from this
that a 'cow, to pay the Cost of her
keep, must yield ten quarts of milk
per day, or make seven pounds of
butter per week rand that a farmer,
at four cents a quart for milk, mere=
ly sells his hay or grain at - market
price and gets the manure. This is
somewhat foreign to our article,
which is not so much t., prove that it
pays to keep cows in winter as well
as in summer, but to winter them
well! The profit of keeping common
cows comes almost wholly from the
value of "their summer yield above
the apparent cost of their summer
keep.
The winter meal feed can be re.
duced in quality so as to cost not ov
er' ten cents per day for the eight
quarts. This feed will keep the cow •
in good condition, and there will be
•no necessity for summer feeding. If
she has been wintered without feed,
she will require it in the summer,
and her increase of two or three
quarts per day will pair' for the field.
,It is better economy to feed in win
ter, because the winter yield is in
creased-and, the trouble, is saved of
summer feeding.
In connection With winter keeping,
let us describe the winter quarters
of ten cows: The ground - slopes ,
gently to"the southeast, and is about
eighty feet square. On the rear to
wards
the northwest is a hay-house,,,
eighty by eighteen feet, the space un
der which is occupied by cow-house
under the west end and overshoot
under the east, each forty feet long.
The cows are arranged on plank floor,
• with gutter and four foot walk be
hind them, and hay manger nnd
pas
sage in front of them. They all face
northwest, 'each having a space of
four feet, with no divisions between
them, and are kept in stanchions. In
the rear are three doors to,allowthem
to go out into the yard, and one at
the east end ot'Oiralk to go under
overshoot. The yard is about sixty
two by eighty feet, is sheltered on
the northeast and southwest sides by
low buildings, and on the southeast
by a board fence four feet high. In
the centre of the yard is an octagon
al enclosure of boards four feet high and twenty feet in diameter, into
Which all the manure of both stalls
and yard is thrown as fast as deliv
ered, so that the - yard is kept perfect
ly clean. Over this yard is kept
spread marsh or salt hay about six
inches in depth, so inviting that the
cows can lie down in any part of it.
While in the yard they are sheltered
from 'all the cold windEi, and from the
southeast comes the morning sun as
soon as risen. The overshoot fur
nished shelter from the rain and its
west end between the passage doors
i 3 the water trough, always fall.
There is a window on the southwest
side of the west corner, to light their
heads and the, prLsßve in front -of
them, arid two windows in their - rear.
The hay mangers aro level with floor,
and large enough to hold easily five
pounds of hay. Each has a lamp of
rock salt, and the meal iirled on the
bottOm, During all fair weather
they are in the yard except at meal;
thus are they bright, comfortable and
thrifty. —Con airy Genf/ man.
- KINDNESS CRUELTE.—An instance
of the effect of kir:di:new upon an ob
stinate horso was lately shown, where
a man with a team attempted to diaw
a load of stone. The horse having
become obstinate or discouraged from
'overwork, refused to draw the lied,
at which his master beat him very
crtelly, but to purpose. A friend
told the stranger that he should - not i
beat him an x more, and that lie
would try the Zil'ect o kindness. So,
apprqacliing the poor beast in a gen
tle manner, he comnienced smoothing
his face, and looking into - his eyes,
patting his neck and using words
kinkness. After a short time he said'
to the horse: "Now try and- see
what you can do." The horse'• im
raectately exerted his fall - strength
- and carried off the lord. Herein is
plainly seen how susceptible a bora°
la to a kind anti gentle manner.
Many a noble bolsi% has been ruined
by a coarse and brutal driver. Over
-Ir,-atied and overworked, thq becorae
