Color and Wrimith ' Soils.
I have long been Ic9‘ing for some
thing in 7 regard to the color in soils
in agricultural pap rs, and have tried
an ezieriment 'th the common
thermometer, ering it with white_
muslin and th n with black, showing
eight degree difference; but •I think,
with some tter mode of trying the
experim t, say by marking the scale
on the be and painting boxes the
color f different soils, and new straw,
• etc. t would show fiftten to twenty
de rees in the open air. If so, such
ack substance as muck, soot, and
- others, composted and dried, so that
it may be applied easily like plaster,
would be very beneficial to corn and
its kindred, and also the plants from
southern latitudes in a cold spring,
or with new straw and light colored
substances as a mulch about peach
trees, to keep then, back from blos
soming until after frost, in a warm
and growing spring. This theory
. will make plain the conflicting • state
ments—by one, that muck is very
beneficial as a fertilizer, probably on
light colored soils—and by another,
that it is not worth applying or does
not pay: Place a black chip or some
soot on a piece of ice on a fine winter
. day, and see how soon it will lind.its
way down. Now wait till the. air and
snn are much warmer, throw out an
• armful of bright straw ornew, shav
__ ings,. and note how many, more days
the snow remains under - these than
where the dark soil is plown among
the snow. I trust farmers will take
notice, and report progress next sea

TLIE BEST PLACE FOR A HORSE.
• • Gossiper" in the "Rural World,"
ys: "Winter or Summer, except
in a stormy time, there is no place
so comprtable for colts or tired:work
horses as a good pasture lot. To tie
up a horse at night in a narrow cell,
, with a plank floor to stand on, is a
- specimen of cruelty that civilization
ought to be ashamed of. - If the poor
animal must be confined like a con
vict in a dnngeon, for pity's sake let
him have hits head, and give him at
least twelve feet square, with a soft
dry floor to stand or lie on. In the
large. cities land is worth more mon
ey than horses; hut:on the farm there
is no excuse for any such wicked
economy. Ask the horse what he
,wants, and he will. tell you that a
'place where he can walk around, lie
down 'and stretch his tired limbs, and
roll over from one side to the other,
gives him more easb and comfort, af
ter a day of hard work; than the most
costly' plank stalls, with all the'ac

bristle brushes, rubber clothes and
dexterous hostlers that can be pro-.

A New HOUSE Suoc.—Among the
useful inventions we noticed at the
late Fair was a new style of horse
shoe, made and patented by Henry
R. Hitner of Marble Hall, of this
State. ItconSists of two parts, the
first a plain curved plate, without
calks, which is fastened to. the hoofs
with nails, in 'the usual way, and to
this plate the shoe proper, with dull
calks is attached by means of screws..
By this arrangement a horie can 'al
ways be provided with -sharp 'calks,
in icy times with.little trouble. The
idea strikes us as excellent, and we
thind it worthy the attention of
horsemen.—Doylestoten Demoerat,,

CONCAVE CONVEY, CRYSTAL LENSES, LONDON
SMOKED AND TLSTED GLASS FOE WYSS On IS-
The Concave Convex Crystal Spectre les, made by
the above Institute are now a long time before the
public, and the rapid and increased demand for them
combined with the universal acknowledgment of
their clearness in vision and me to the eye, shows
plainly that they arc superior to any other glasses
in the market.
The majority of Spectacles, (mostly imported) and
no matter how tine the frames, contain but a
and worthless article of glasses, (generally cast or
pressed;) they ace made to be sold Only, without
any calculation respecting benefit to the eye; and
therefore the great complaint of poor and welt
sight. Thodsands are using glasses now which tire
and fatigue the eye, where the objects get dim jtter
short usage, or require an intensely strong 'light
and therefore destroying the sight, which, were they
properly suited, would be preserved a life time.
The advantages claimed for the Concave Convex
Crystal Glasses ere the following :
The Lenses are ground of the best material, pure
and hard, and made only for optical purposes, they
are therefore not liable to get scratched or dim.
They confer a brillianey and distinctness of vision
not found In any other glass.
They can be used equally well by day or candle
light without tiring or fatiguing the eyed.
They are ground mathematically true in the con
cave convex mirror, according to the philosophy of
nature, and shape of cornea of the eye, therefore
assisting nature only instead of forcing it.
That the lenses are centered correct into the frames.
They cab be used longer than any other glasses
without changing to a higher power.
The frames are made strong and durable by expo.
rienced workmen and warranted togive esteseffon.
W3l. A. CHAMBERLIN,
Dealer in Watches, Jewelry and Silver Ware, Towarkt
