vctaa Mr. Editor, we liav ‘ e been to the
Teachers' Instigate at Lellaysville, carried on
under the direction of Prof. Harem
In many things we were interested, but in
amp) things' we were disappointed. We had
sop sed that , we as teachers would be put
through a course of training calculated to fit
us for oar duties next winter in the school
room. We had a right to expect this. But,
sir, after leaving the school We, word attending
for one week, getting behindinir class as it con
sequence, paying for board, de., what is the
result? What is the sum total of the benefits
we have received? So far as we can judge,
just this. We listened to several interesting
lectures from different• persons, and were
amused by the readings of Prof. SuoestAKEß.
He is a fine reader and a good elocutionist
no doubt, but how did all this help as in .tile
performance of our duty as teachers? These
readings took up so mnph of the time that we
had no chance to read' in spell for ourselves,
and we got but very Wile' or no training in
Orthography. But weibad some of the tallest
kind of parsing entirely, and wo wikl , give you
some examples. In . the sentence " Towanda
is situated on the Susquehanna," situated was
called an adjectival qualifying Towanda.. Bo
in the sentence "There was a castle, the owner
whereof was a giant," whereof was called an
adjective, qualifying, owner.
Now, Mr. Editor, if this kind of prang is
not of the whangdoodle highfalutin style, pray
tell us if jell can what is.
An adjective tells us what kind of a person
or thing it may be. As fur instance, a good
man, a good thing, or a bad thing, Ac.
Now a town may be large or small, new or
old ; an owner of a thing may be good or bad,
rich or poor, black or white, but to talk of a
"situated town," or the "whereof owner of a
mountain castle" Is the merest nonsense, too'
barefaced and absurd to go down with the
common sense of nine-tenths of theteaehors of
Bradford county, the opinion' of the "great
ones" at the Institute to the contrary notwith
standing. This is not written in a captious,
faultfinding spirit, but witli a desire to learn
the truth and get upon a right, foundation.
Great men are not always wise, and. the little
ant that lays up its winter store may teach us
lessons of wisdom and economy.

We can't al! be elocutionists if we try. AU
the training in the world cannot make a man
eloquent; it is a gift of nature, it must be in
the occasion and in the man. •
Prof. SHOEILIMER was paid for hie readings
at the Institute (as we art informed) hearty
seventy dollars for about four days time, while
the best of us must toil fire days in the
week, board around from, house to house, for
three long ilia weary months for about the
same sari of money.
Is this right and rain authorises this expert
diture? If it is from a t ßtato or county fund
how much better it would be to use this money).
for the legitimate objects of education, paying
the faithfnl teachers, er in repairing school
houses, some of which in the county are hardly
fit to be used as a barn. But it is too much
the case in all the departments of human life
that amusement merely is the order of the day.
Everything must be done to a merry tune.
Churches even must get up a festival or a fair
to secure the means of carrying on their relig
ious organizations and sustain the.preachiug of
the Word of Life among them.
We ought to t be better than children. What
we want, or rather what we need, is something
to fit us for the sober realities of life.
What we need as teachers is a course of
training at these yearly Institutes thatwillbet
ter enable rut to discharge our, anti in the
school-room to those who may ho,committed
to pneeate
Prof. Ksuu seems interested for our well
fare as teachers ; if left to his instruction alone
we have no doubt that we should have been
much better pleased and more benefit ted by the
Institrite than we were.
_ Next year if we live to meet him at an Insti
tute like the one just closed, wo hope he will

'A word as to their manner of doing basins
may not bo uninteresting.
Each salesman is furnished with a small
book, in whiCh every other page bar the name
of "Powru. A Co." printed at the head. On
making a sale of goods an Remind bill is made
in the book with a pencil on transfer paper,
which duplicathe it on both pages. • The leaf
with the printed heading is then torn out, a I
check boy called, who carries the goods, the
money and the bill to the cashier's desk, when 1 '
they are handed tp a clerk whose duty it is to
tie up the packages. The - pithier then.calls eft
the items, and he notes that they are all there,
when the bill is passed over to tho lyer, who, in
the twinkling of an eye, closes it in the pack
age, hands is to the boy, who, with the
change, returns it to the customer. By this
system every purchaser is burnished with a
bill, to that it can be referred to at leisure and
seen that everything is correct, - and the sales
men has a copy of it in his book also.. It mat
ters not whether the purchase is a spool of
cotton or one hendred different items, the bill is
made and 'placed in the package when it is
done np. This; besides affording an opportu
nity to correct errors, is always very Satisfac
tory to buyers.
If a customer , purchases and pays for a bill
of,goods, and wishes to leave it in the store till
called for, it is checked like railroad baggage,
arid the check banded to him. When this is
done the firm becomes responsible for the
package.
There are about twenty clerks and, eight or
ten "check boys'' engaged in the store, and yet
everything mores with the precision of clock
work—each employe has his partienkr duty
assigned him, and no confusion ensues. This
is owing to the system which has been adopted
and strictly adhered to.
Their sales are uniformly increasing, and
Lave been, from year to year. The Weser the
present year exceed those of any writ= year
very mach. • The principle of largo aides and
small profits is hero fully realized; the amount
of asks being so largo that n rate of profits
that is sufficient in a business of this magni
tude, are wholly uusuilicient in a small busi
ness. It is to this principle that we attribute

Altogether the premises are admirably adapt

well-known and reliable house, and we predict
that in their now and princely quarters they
