We have thus far had a very flourishing sea•

is LIIIICIIIII, wheat far below th 6 last years crop,
apples are also very generally down below the
average, growth of pasturage and potatoes
simply enormous ; the Early Bose and a now
late variety called the Fairtnan are the rewr

favorable season for the honey bee as has -been
the present. We attribute this to the increas-.
ing cultic tion of clover. Speaking of this plant
we wish we bad words adequate to express our
admiration of this fertelizing God send to poor
farmers ; if used freely it will never bring dis

we may give yon the name of a very successful
bee keeper residing near French Mills, Mr.
JAN. LEWIS. Country merchants are 'thriving,
indeed it would seen as though the patronage
of farmers in particular was mostly secured to
country stores. Our merchant, C. L. SIILIPARD,
has seemed to steadily increase his line of busi

arrives all out of breath. This shows the re

A new method of holding the attention of
the assemblage has unluckily been inaugurated
at the French Mills Church. Before the formal

-our lasne of August 4th I find an article addax
mrporta to have been written by A. B. Itrr-
Nur., the anthur of on unprovoked and elan
derons attack upon the (loardiau Mutual Life
Insurance Company of Now York. In your is
sue of July 21st I published a card in reply to
his attack,'which was verbal. This was thornily
available means of defence at my disposal. I
then took occasion to state certain facts con
nected with the company represented by this
Napoleon of Insurance, simply to remind him
that those whit live in glass houses should not
be tho,4rst to. hrow stones. These facto were
stated with official reports to the New VOrk
Legislature before me, and taken from Its col
owns. These facts it appears had the effect of
arousing the unbridled passion, and developing
the true character of the man regardless of the
positi.n he claims to hold. As water is sure to
Lind its level so was it with this man. - Being
au expert in billingsgate he poured forth a tor
rent of abusive epithetic suited only to the; low;
eat rough, threatening violence with deadly
weapons, Ite, t mitibituni. And new forsooth
this "Knight of the Pistol " becomes a moralist,
and writes an essay upon the violation of moral,
physical and natural laws. Having in. his mad
ness and rage violated all of them, he . now
seems to realize the fearful penalty. Truly,
"the way of the transgressor is bard.
• Passing over the first two paragraphs (which,
by the way, would be decidedly apVicable,
provided I were to put myself in his place) I will
proceed in candor and with unquestionable.
documentery evidence before me to review his
article. First—Ho "refers me to some official
reports as published by the New York Life In
surance Company." Why does he not refer me
to the official reports of Superintendent BARNES
or his successor, or the Commissioner of Mas
sachusetts instead of garbled statements gotten
up for base and selfish purposes, by men with
as little principle as himself.
Answer: I deny that the New York Life In
surance Company publishes any such reports
as he refers me to, or in fact any reports at all.
Official reports are published by publishing
houses only, and then by State or Judicial
authority only, and all companies are supplied
on receipt of their orders. Again he says the
Guardian Mutual Life paid no dividends in 1865-
66-67-68. Answer: January Ist, 1865, was the
first regular dividend period,'behig five years
from the time of organization of She company,
and was in strict accordance with the provis
ions of its charter. In that' .year we paid a
dividend of $48,153. 07. In regard to 1866-67-
JO. CUMULI:CIS.
68, Le says truly, (though I have no doubt he
did not intend to do so) as we could not do so
legally in those years. But at the opening of
the session of 1867 the Legislature was invoked
and an amendment to the charter was passed
allotting (ho company to declare divident.
annually after 1870 (which was the next regular
diliisnd period). The comPany did not wait,
however, for that period to arr:ve, for on Arm
. 4 Ist, 1889, the surplus was divided (Inform
ally) in just proportion to each policy entitled.
to participation, paying each life policy in my
district a dividend on the first renewal of 25
per cent. in cash.
As for the policy on which ho tries to make
so much capital; it was issued, and a paid up
policy asked for and granted between the reg
afar dividend periods, and therefore was not,
by any known rule, yet adopted by - any compa
ny entitled to a dividend. do much for the
truthfulness of the - statements-of A. B. 13. It
is also untrue that I tried to malign the char
acter of the Hommopatbic Life Insurance Com
pany or said aught l against it until my' crompa
ny avas assailed by its agent. I then stated
that such statements came with .bad grace
from the representative of a company that not
only had paid no dividend at all, but took' (711)
seventy-one and one-half per cent. of its income
to pay its expenses, which, according to the
Superintendent's report to the
: Legislature of
New York, is absolutely true, a fraction except
ed. The figures as given in said report are as
follows : Ratio cd, expense to total income 71
45-100 per tient., and'as A.B.R. seems to have
no recourse to official documents, I would refer
him to the report of the Commissioners of
Massachusetts for the years 1868,- where he
wilt find a eledlar item which stands thus :
Radio of gross expenseeto gross income (divid
end on guarantee capital included) 116 79-100
per cent., while in the same columns the Otter
dian stands 25 64-100 and 25 19-100 respectively.
As to dividends. to policy holders, the edhunn
