not in the least corrode the pen. It
is. far superior to the usual acid inks,
which will spoil the, best steel pen in
a few hours use.. In fact, we have no
ink that we like so well as this. It
is made thus : To live gallons of
water at boiling heat, add one-half
pound of logwbod, one-half ounce hi

is then made and ready for use. The
cost is six cents per gallon.

than those employed against the Chi

'black cricket*, hi a belt one mile wide
and of unknown length, struck the
Humboldt River about six miles above
Elko v Nev., and crossed l it. Its sur
kc.^ was blackened for hours, and
fishes gathered from up and down
the river to feast upon them. It was
f•iiind that horses, driven into the
column of crickets, became frightened
and could not be induced to proceed.
Some of the individual crickets were.
of extraordinary size. In Utah,
g;•,c-Islioppers 'are said to "stihside "
somewhat after a flock of sheep is
driven rapidly about in a field con
taining them. Near Stockton, as a
railroad train was going up a steep

to a stop by these insects. Another
train came to its, assistance and with
a plentiful distribution of sand and
the m:e of brooms by men standing
on the cowcatcher, the locality so in

dfiehigail Farmer, of Detroit,
has this about top-dressing : " Here
is a farm that a few years ago would
hardly , raise food enon , di on five acres
to keep' a single head at stock.
By means of t . - ning and top,
drossing, the heaviest crops of clover
and grass are now being raised, and
a field of clover that had been sown
-last year promised aßrop that would
yield at the rate of two and a half
tons to three tons per acre
_from the
first cutting. It was a solid mass of
vegetation that a mouse could hardly
find its way into. The manure on
this farm is soaked at all Seasons
When wanted with.the liquid manure
from the yards and barns, and :this
is applied as a top-dressing to the
grays fields."
