Cucumbers for PioVea. Annually, acres are planted fur nish cucumber pickles for the table. Hundreds of awes are devoted to growing small cucumberit, that - find a ready market :at the houses: engaged inputting up pickles and other con diments for the trade, The best soil .for sivicumbers is 'a rich loam; onhlfwerked, into which is ineor porated?well 'decomposed manure; and, when the soil cannot be made rich enough, or manure is not abund ant, growers content themselves with making Only - the .hills rich by a half harrow, at least, of manure worked them, and. covered with a few inches of soil. The hills should be -worked rather :Mow than above the -general level of the . soil, that they may be the better supplied with moisture. Dur ing Jane and July is the preferable time of planting for pickles. The soil of the hill should be made fino, and for field culture, the 4tißs should not less than' six feet apait,_each %ay, to give ample room for the sines, and to prevent their being trodden upon and injured i )yhile gathering the crop. It is good economy -td use plenty of seed, to provide for any destruc tion of plants by insect enemies, -of which the yellow-striped brio' is the most formidable. ,Wo usually plant a dozen seeds ? though four or five healthy plants to a lull are all that need- be preserved. Tobacco dust, soot, powdered charcoal, plaster and many other things have been used to prevent the ravages of the bugs, with varyinglsuccess. Constant bare and examination of the young plants will be required for their safety. When -the hills arc es tablished, the field should receive good, clean culture, keeping the soil about the plants loose and fresh, and the whole free from grass and weeds. If the weather Proves dry, a gentle Watering at evening will be valuable, after which the .ground should be again within a day- or two, to preVent its getting baked and hard. The vines may be allowed to nearly -- cover the .ground; and those which rim too far should be clipped at the ends. Some cultivators practice clipping to induce laterals and increase the fruiting. Pinking should commence as soon as the encumbers are of sufficient size, . and while yet small, as the smaller cucumbers meet with a , more ready sale. The whole field should be reg ularly picked at least every two' days by careful hands, cutting off the fruit with a sharp knife or shears, with the least possible disturbance of the vines. No cucumbers should be allowed to get large, or go : to seed, as every oc currence of this kind retards the fruiting. The varieties in general use are the Early Frame, Early Green Clustei, Long Green and Early White Spined. The best success within our knowl edge has been from the White Spined, separate. It is quick growing, straight, uniform and thin skinned. . With a good soil, fair market and careful picking, so as to prolong the season, pickles are a paying crop. -We have known as high as six hun dred dollars marketed from two acres in a single year, and other years with equally good prices, not more than half that amount. xperienced gar deners prefer seed two or more years old, which they claim make less vine and fruit better.—Bural Sew Yorker. Do Partners Study Enough? The subject of agriculture is one that demands fully as much attention at the hands of the reading public as it gets. Indeed no theme presents itself that is frauht With more • real import., so far asregards our pros perity, than the Wants of the agricul tural world. That we mean by at tention, is a studious, careful search for the best way of accomplishing certain desired results, net a super ficial investigation of some theory merely for the• impose of creating ditkrence and provoking discussion. The day has, happily, passed when being a fanner is synonymous with being a blockhead. It requites some thing more than mere physicial strength to keep up with the advance of the age in fanning as well as sci ence.' Many of the systems of years ago are no more applicable to thede mand of to-day than would be an ox team to run au opposite` freight line across the Plains. The farmer who reads muc.i, and reads that much with care, s the one who; stands in advance iu intelligence and pros perity. Science can aid the farmer in rais ing wheat or corn just as much as it can aid the miller in grinding it ; and the science to be applied in agricul ture is nothing more than a study of the composition of soils and the pro pertie4 that are drawn from them by certain grains. PASTVIIING HOG 4 IN SITSIMEII.—A. correspondent of the Country Gentle nian,4.-- writing from Hamilton Co., Ohio says, the system of all good hog raisers in that region is to pasture hogs on clover during 'the summer. He presents, as the advantages of this plan, the statement that an acre of grouri4" in clover will pasture five hogs four months, and that it will take the corn from half fin acre to feed them at the same -time. The cultivation of the corn he counts equal to the rent of the other half_acre. He further claims that hogs pastured on clover are in far better condition than if fed on corn, as they are larger framed, healthier and eat baler ; and also statds that the land is en riched by the clover pasturing. • The hogs' noses must be rung, or cut if they are to be pastured. To do this, this writer 'makes rings of pieces of No 10 wire 3i inches long. Each end is curved over the horn of an an vil. A hole . is made through the snout with.a IA awl ; the ring is ilk sorted and closiela up until the ends lap a little. PROFITS OF POULTRY.--A corres pondent of the Concord (N. if. The total cash received for c;igs and poultry during the three years was $351.50. . The cost of keep ing was fully met by the eggs used in the family : so the above amount wiui clear profit.
