Management of Ormt .
Hugh T. Brooks discourses es ffol.
lows noon this Object in the 'Western
Stock Journal':
Butter, cheese, - milk, and Meatforni
verilexie spac e m the 112 .9 8 t0.iP 1-
portant department of sublunary
'fairs, and their-full and cheap =flay
depends , essentially - on the proper ,
management of Cows.'
To begin at - the beginning, every
householder should feel an irrepress
ible interdict in the Propagaracm;
perpetuation of good milking animals:
No person has-a moral right to own
or possess a good . Cow except ,"for
the purposes therein set forth,"'
the largest supply of good. milk, and
the increase other species—these'
legitimate ends we are botundies seek.
First, by breeding from reilkiliag
families—serapulonsly rejecting all
males and females' not descended
from good milking steel.'
Second, by providing - -young ani
mals with a sufficiency of the right
kind of nutriment. The milk vessels
are developed by nutritious and suc
culent food, which should be liberally
supplied from the very start.
A calf that maintains a, precarious
existence on poor hay and straw, and
grows up withenteare or carrots, can
licarcely make - a geed coW, 'even if it
has good Ancestors, ernd is well treat
ed in afterlife. There is no place
for neglect in thenzilk business. All
things require, tube trained and de
veloped for their proper sphere. •
Third, docility_and good behavior
are essential elnimeteristics of a good
cow—they are secured by 'kindness
and . faituliarity. -J .:Tar niers should
never neglect their-calves ; as they do
their own families, unless they are
willing to have them grow up wild
and ungovernable. Cultivate in all
these eases constant and kindly rela
tions from the'rery beginnink.
Fourth, guard against drouth in
summer, and short supplies in win
ter., by securing early a good quanti-
ty of bran or s horts. These, as well
as roots, pumpkins, apples, and well
reserved corn fodder, are peculiarly
adapted to the production of milk.
Fifth, cut your hay early! Woody
fiber is a good thing in its place, or
it never would have been sent, but
no orthodox man has any right to
believe that it- is much adapted to
dairy purposeS. CutNyour hay just
as the blossoms fall.eep it snug
every night—no rains and no dew
upon it. Be-sure and dr it 'enough
so that it will 'keep perfeCtly sweet,
without must, and be sure and not
dry it any more than is necessary.
Sixth, unless a cowsis a remarkably
;rood breeder, let her go furrow. feed
her high, and milk her through the
winter, and sell her to the butcher ;
Flo this as soon as she begins to fail,
and while she is profitable to feed for
beef.
Seventh, consider a good supply of
good milk as a necessary of life, and'
never be without it. Milk can be
secured by having a cow come in late.
in summer, or by having one
—it would be the poorest—go farrow,
and then go to. the shambles.
Eighth, deformity and butter are
not inseparable companions. You
may have a good looking cow that
will fill your pail quitOs well as the
hi4oridal "brindle cow with a crum
ple hOrn," crooked leg, shaggy coat,
flat rib, sloping rump, and irrepressi
ble back bone.
You,may breed quite successfully
for beef purposes, while yousecure a
good supply, of most excellent milk.
Ninth, let everything be done de
cently cleanly, and regularly.
Tenth, provide good, warm, well
ventilated stables, anti never omit to
groom and lied your animals.
Length of Vhiffie-Trees
A. horse cannot draw as well with
a whiflle-tree twelve feet long as with
one two feet six inches iu lengh, be-
eanso the line of draught is not in
the proper direction to be most ef-
fective. Nor can two horses, har
nessed abreast, draw well With whit'-
11c-trees ten feet long, while their
heads are coupled close together, be
cause they must travel sidewise, more
or less, in which 'position no animal
can exert all his strength to the best
advantage in hauling a load.'
: Horses draw best with a double
whillbtree just long enough to allow
them to stand close to each other,
having single whiftle-trees attached
directly behind - them, and just long
enough to meet in the middle. When
the double-tree is very long, each.
horse must draw more or less side
wise, if the coupling lines and the
neckyoke are not made long enough
to' allow them to move directly for
ward
,without having their heads
turned toward each other. In order
to determine the correct' length of
whiffle-trees, let two 'horses stand
side by side, with their sides three
. inches apikt ; then measure from the
centre of one horse to the other on
their backs. Thi' will give the length
for a neekyoke, and the correct length
for the .double whiffle-tree, betiveen
the joints where the single-trees are
to be attached. When a neckyoke is
only eighteen inches; long, and the
double-tree of the .ftoper length,
horses will be required to move more
- Or less sidewise. For the same rea
son, oxen often get in the habit of
hauling sidewise, because the yoke is
too short. Neither oxen or horses
can travel easily and freely, when
their heads are turned toward, and
their butts from, each other.
Milne-trees for plowing should
always be as short as they can be
made, without bringing the , traces
against the legs of the team. • A very
long double whiffle-tree tends to
make a plow take to wide a furrow
slice. If the clevis b adjusted to
take a'. narrow fun - ow:slice—when
the double-tree is too long—the plow
will not run at all satisfactory. The
horse in the furrow will not be able
to walk squarely in his ; place, because
the line of draught is auch as to keep
crowding his hind feet out of the
furrow on the plowed ground. The
-length of the double whiffle-tree and
the neck-yoke fora sleigh should be
just as longnS the sleigh is wide,. from
the centre of one - runner to the oth
