Junp 18, 1870
TUSCABORA.—DEAB REPOITEIt Last
week was s busy time with our Spring Hill poo
pie. Tuesday eve, June-7, the Ministerial As
sociation for Wyalnaing District met at the• M.
E. Church. After religions-exercises, Rev. iall•
PECK made the opening address, from
" Iron 'sharpeneth iron," showing the necessity
and benefit of such gatherings to ministers, in
correcting their habits of thinking, writing and
speaking—being a sort of school to supply the
place of college to such as are called from the
plow or their fishing nets to the Master's vine
yard, and in preventing rust from gathering
mien the steel of all. The address was gotten
up and ojr in the author's nanat happy style. , It
was in part argumentative, abounding in pleas
ing histojical reminiscences and solemn sretlee
*ions. These Associations meet three times - a
year to read essays, criticise each other's faults
of delivery, and of composition, Se. The critics
picked for flaws in the opening , address,„,when
the author was allowed to demolish tlue , critics.
There were some twenty members present, and
phoevereead an-essay was required to run the
gauntlet of the other's criticism, And so iron
is made to sharpen iron. Dining the four ses
sions, the following 'members read essays : lkov,
J. IL Wiwrox, "The Grumbler," which was a
good thing ; Rev. D. C OL.ILVEAD, " The Min
biter's Stomach," excellent and practical; Rev.
P. HOLEECCIE, " Pantheism"; Rev. 8. B. Wile
worms, "True Nobleness of Character"; Rev.
J. B. Bcx.Nrat, "The Minister "; a sermon by
Bor. S. ELWELL, and sermon briefs by iteis. J.
S. LEWIS and A. L. Smetana. Several essays
were laid over for want of time. We like such
friendly counsel and 'criticism, but when a crit
ic uses the scalping-knife without lint 'or ban
dage, or the balm of Christian charity, we re
call the lines of the poet—
_
" Let dogs delight to bark and bite,
It is their nature for to do-so;
lint children's hands Were never made -
. To aerateluand tear each other's eyes so."
I may be a little rusty is my quotation, and beg
for quarters at the . bands of the critics.
Our Teacher? Association met at same' place
later in the week. It was one of the pleasant
est se4sionti - weliare ittentled. The mnsii,tis
crwsions, declamations, essays awl eeture were
none of your dull, prosy kind, but earliest tt'nd,
pointed. It showed "thht Ose. thing: that ?see .
hare teachers who think for themselves, and
who can " speak and write the ,EPglishlan
page with propriety." Ana -tio.aie. glad. to
think this latter class are on the increade in
Eastern Bradford. Among the pretty things,
we may mention a large and splendid bouquet'
of leaferlilies. Of the Teachers' County ASl55t.,
elation we say, ".Long may it wave."
There appears to boa "right smart" pros
