    Tho Germination of Seed
There are, doubtless, one million of
dollars lost annually, on tho Ameri
can continent; by depositing seed Se
deep in the earth as to render .their
germination difficult; and, in many
instances, enfeebling the. life of the
plant after germination so to make the
yield unprofitable. The seed of wheat
or Indian corn deposited at a depth
of ten inches underwill
. the surface wi
nut sprout at all—being below the
influences of surface agitations, such
sun rays, showers, Zte.; at seven
inches sorne,.probably ten • per cent.,
of corn or wheat will foi.ce- out, but
will be so enfeebled as not to mature
seed as, from actual experiment, corn
planted seven inches deep required
twenty-one days to come up and was
so enfeebled that it grew to the height
of three feet and died prematurely,
not maturing a grain. A like experi
ment with wheat gave a few very im
perfect seeds. At four inches the
vitality of the plants seemed propor
tionately checked,- the germination
being effected in sixteen days. The
same grain, corn .or wheat, planted'
at a depth of three-fourths of an inch,
or one inch, would germinate in eight
days in a moderately cool soil, or in
sir days as the sun's rays become
warmer.
The natural functions of the seed
in germination is to support the body
of the plant till it.becomes.Suffacient
ly stout to throw but surface feeders'
suilicient for after support, when the
powers of the germ are exhausted,
which are wholly exhausted in germ
ination when the seeds are so, depos
ited as to make tliegennination very
difficult—lessening the support of the
plant at a very, critical period of ex-
I,telleC
Counting the loss of seed that nev
er germinate at all, and the propor
tionate loss by being too deeply plant
ed, and one can very readily see the
loss by neglect or carelessness of deep
planting has not been over-estimated.
Doubtless many planters, who have
ma le extra efforts for a crop and had
almost an entire failure, could, by ex
periment, ascertain the prime cause.
A Drover on Fattening Cattle
'Mr. Bela S. Hastings, who is one
of the leading drovers from Vermont,
is rupplying cattle for the Boston
10:trizet, gave his experience and ob
:.crvation in relation to fattening
stock, at a late meeting of the Cale
donia county Farmers' Club :
He said the main object of the
farmer was to get the most out of his
fodder. It does not pay to feed graiii
to a poor, creature, one that does not.
take on flesh rapidly. •Farmers will
do better to dispose of such stock for
what it will bring and procure ani
mals of good style. He believed that
efe-half of the grain fed was wasted
I,y- not being fed to good cattle. An
other important point.is, farmers do
not feed heavy enough. He world
. conouence with as much Led as they
could bear at first anti then increase.
In feeding twelve quarts of meal, the
last four quarts are worth twice as
.much as the first four for fattening
purposes. Some farmers complain
that they do not get pay for the grain
they feed out, but he had noticed
that it was only those who fed light
that thus complained. Whether the
'animal was to be .;fed 2 short or a
long time, he would recommend
heavy feeding. Mr Hastings said he
knew of nothing better than corn
meal. The cob is worth but little, if
anything. Those per,ons of whom
he purchased fat styeli, who were the
most successful and made it most
i‘roiltable, were those who fed meal
largely. If a farmer has potatoes or
other roots it is well enough. to feed
these in part, but a farmer will do
hotter to exchange rlome of his roots
for corn, than to feed roots altogether.
It is important to keel regidarly and
not too often, as the stock will eat
Aud lie down and ruminate. It is
better,to feed cattle but three times a
day and sheep but ,once.
t t. NEW DIF.INITCTANT. --We dare
very few persons are aware that
coffee is a valuable disinfectant. Ex
i;erintents, however, have proved that
it the most powerful means, not
only of rendering animal and vegeta
-1 effluvia innocuous, but of. actually
destroying them. A. room in which
meat in an advanced state of decom
pnsition had been kept for some time,
was instantly deprived of all smell on
' open coffee roaster being -carried
through it, containing a pound of
coffee • roasted. In another room,
exposed to the effluvium occasioned
by the clearing out of a manure pit,
r.o that salfuretted hydrogen and tun
' ne.pitia in great quantities could be
chemically detected, the stench was
completely removed in half n minute,
on the employment of three - ounces
of fresh roasted coffee, while the oth
er parts of the house were permanent
ly cleared of the same smell by being
raversed with the coffee roaster, -al
though the cleansing of the pit con
tinued for several hours after. The
best mode of using the coffee as a
aiinfeetant, is to dry'the raw bean,
pound it in a.mortar, and then roast
the powder on a moderately heated
iron plate, until it assumes a dark
brown tint, when it is fit for use.
Then - Sprinkle it in sinks or cesspools,
or l;ty it on a plate in the room which
you wish to have ptitrified. Coffee
acid, or coffee-oil, acts more readily
in minute quantities.
HOLLOW Hem; Disnoas.—A writer
in the Boston Clillirator gives the
fo'lowing as the symptoms of, and
remedy for, the hollow horn disease.
' The symptoms are drooping of the
head and ears, lying down. Turning
the•head over the back, towards the
shoulders, as if pain in the head.
This I think is a spinal . disease, af
fecting the brains and horns.
'Guar.—Take a large table spoonful
of sulphur, and lard, 'sufficient when
warm to make it soft like paste, pour
it on the top of the head at the root
of the horns ; take a shovel or flat
piece of iron, heat it, and hold it over
the head so as to heat the paste and
warm the top of the head as much as
the beaSt will beat ; repeat once in
two or • three days, and bore the.
horns on the under. tide, two or three
inches from the head, so as to let in
fresh air, and lei the putrid matter
out if any is collected. I have never
known this to fail if taken before too
far gone. I have enrol one cow
when the top of the head was so full
of matter that I opened a place above
the ear which discharged more time
a half pint. Thii was in the summer,
the cow was fatted in the fall and kill
ed. The head was all right, except-
ing a plare at the roots of the horns
about as largf,siz a spoon
