111 teaching a young horse to drive
not hurry to see how fast ho
can trot.: Keep each *ice clear.' and
distinct from the: other; fruit ia, walk.
ing him make him walk and 'do not
allow hire . trot. While trotting,
be egtmlly
careful that he keeps
steady at his pace, and do not allow
him'to slack into a walk. The reins,
`While driving, should be kept sting,
anti when pushed at the top of his
speed, keep him well in band, that he
may learn well to bear upon the bit,
so that when going at a high rate of
speed he can be held at his pace, but
do not allow him to pull too hard,
for it is n,ot only unpleasant, but
makes him often difficult to manage.
To prevent bcdtPr-breaking, pro
cure a small; hard, strong cord, from
eight - to Lou feet long ; put the her
ness'on the horse, buckle • the girth
tight, makinga slippuThg noose on one
end of the cord and put it around
. the horses tail, close to .the body ;
slip the other end through the terra
and bit ring, and hitch the horse to
post and leave him to himself. Tw r o
or three lessons will cure any hoise.
When a horse stands long in the
stable his legs are apt to swell. No
horse which is not disabled by sick
ness or lameness should be allowed
to stand long in the stable. Inaction
pyoducps a dropsical condition of the
independent parts of the body ; and
the obvious remedy is to exercise the
horse every day.
To prevent ovrreaching,pare the
heel of the forward footow. This
causes The horse as he moves forward
to raise the forward foot quicker,
and allows the hind foot to remain
longer, so that , before the-hind foot
comes forward the forefoot is out of
• the way. Also make the forward
. shoe long. If the reason is not plain,
let any one. try the experiment and
they will be satisfied. •
To KELT Cincxzss 7-TrAtanr.--: - We
have published much on this subject,
but the following from a correspond
ent of the Rural New Yorker is op
portune : "The way I keep my fowls
in health, I clean out the house once
a week ; put wood ashes under the,
roosts ; have iron basins for them to
drink from ; whitewash inside of hen
house with hot lime ; put a little, ker
osene oil en the roots once a 'heath.
The main food is oats and cake or
fenceto pick on. I never feed ' but
fence n day—at noon, or when I • shut
them up at
_four five in the after
noon. When they rim out then give
them all they will 'eat. In my expe
rience there is no easier way to
,get
diseased fowls than to keep them
stuffed ; it makes them lazy, and they
won't work as much as they ought to
keep' them in a healthy condition. I
never had any gapes in chickens.
When fowls begin to droop I give
them three large pills of common
yellow soap ; it is the best thing to
cleanse a fowl I know of i I follow it
for three days ; give them nothing to
eat, and plenty of pure water to drink.
In desperate cases give a half tea
spoonful of tincture of lobelia.
EZICI
CCTITIVATING THE STRAWITERITY.-It
has become fairly settled at the only
sound 'method of cultivating the
strawberry that the plants must be
kept free from runners. The effect
of this practice is wonderful. The
whole growth of the plant is concen
trated by this means in the original
stock, and it enlargea, until as many as
a quart of berries havebeen plucked
;rum a single plant. - It will be un
derstood that this method is followed
only with such plants qs are not rais
ed with a view of propogation, but
aro permanent varieties, set out for
family use. In order to sell, the run
ners must be encouraged. After all
the endless list of varieties which
have been extolled as the best, the
Wilson retains its position as the best
market berry. Much will be found
to depend on the nature of the soil
and the mode of cultivation. Before
the plants are in bloom in the early
spring, the application of liquid ma
nure will be found of great value.
THE situ; of an animal, whether cow,
calf, colt, or horse, that dies on 'the
farm is worth more at home than at
the tanners. Cut it into narrow
strips, and shave off the hair kith
sharp knife before the kitchen lire, or
in workshop, stormy days and even
ings. You may make them soft by
rubbing. A rawhide halter-strap, au
.inch wide, will bold a horse better,
and last longer, than an inch rope.
It is stronger than hoop iron and
more durable, and may be used to
hoop dry casks and boxci, and for
hinges.
Try it on a brole.o thill, or any
woodwork.that has been split. Put
it on wet, and nail fast. Thin skins
make the best bag-strings- in the
world. A - raw-hide rope is a good
substitute for a chain. It is valuable
to mend a broken link in a tree chain..
For some purposes it is best to nsa
it in its natural state. For other
purposes it may be dressed soft..
'To IlnuovE MOTES AND CHAFF FROM
THE EIT--Calomel is one of the very
best remedies for motes or chaff in
the eye of horses or cattle. I had a
cow that got an oat chaff on the eye
ball, which resisted all efforts at re
moval. Her eye became so swollen
she could not open if, and white film
began to grow upon the ball. I was
speaking to one of my neighbors
about it ; ho•recouunended the above
remedy, which I applied, blowing it
into the eye with a goose quill, about
the bulk of a grain 'of wheat. Twen
'tv-fora• hours after, no ono would
have supposed anything had ever
ailed the eye. I know of other in
stances where it has been used with
"equal success..
DRSTItOTING Qt.:BRANT AND GOOSEBER-
_Ur Wortits.—A fly or miller deposits
small white eggs on the under side
of the tender leaves of currant and
gooseberry bushes, which yield the
large numbers of white worms that
devour the leaves. Fora day or two
after they are hatched, the worms are
scarcely - perceptible to thb naked eye.
But they . grow rapidly and devour
tender leaves.rapidly.
, The only reliable remedies are
