There can be no tru er test of this devotion than that where men are convinced by some mysterious agency—some undefinable feeling—that death liea'direetly in the pathway of duty, yet march unflinchingly to meet it. One instance, from among wispy, illustrating the grandeur of this devotion : Pasatn g with a comrade, Airmen E. BAILEES, of Elmira, • true soldier and christian gentleman, over the battle field of Chickamauga, we found a rude enclos ure, containing a wide, irregular mound. An humble head-board told the story oft captain, it lieutenant arid sixteen privates from one com pany buried where they fell, beneath the spread ing branches of a massive • oak. - What nobler death than to fall hie those 'Western boys? What more glorious grave than that beneath the sods hallowed by their blocid? What proud er monument than that °Moak, with the stories of their deaths, written, with deadly missiles, upon its rugged aides? Admiring the fair wild flowers, growing upon the grave, - he wondered what hands had planted and.. cared Tor. them, (for we saw no flowers elsewhere upon the field; ) then said - with voice tremulous with emotion : "when our regiment reaches Atlanta the wild flowers will be growing upon my grave." As we turned from they spot where those heroes slept, undisturbed by the tread of a passing ar my, he said, with an assurance that seemed I know I shall not live to see the end ofthis campaign. I hope theavhen I do fall raj comrades can write to my friends 'that, 'he fell at his post doing ins duty.'" The next Sabbath, our regiment—the 141st N. Y. Vols.,— lost in the battle of Bence, nearly half of its numbers in killed and wounded. One of the latter, after having his wound dressed, and be ing anxious about the fate of friends, returned in an ambulance to the field. Wandering along the line from regiment to regiment in search of his own, midnight found him on the same part of the field where his regiment had fought. While standing alone, moonlight revealed hero and there the shadowy outlines of comrades who, just before the battle, had obeyed with hiiuthe bogie call , now fast in that sleep which the morning's *reveille" would not disturb. Stepping against the body of one, lie parted the busheit; and the moonlight rested upon' the white upturned face of Ilent.Baiusen. Already.' with unfaltering devotion, the hero and *patriot had met the death he know awaited hiin. Lest' strangSr hands should on the morrow place him in a soldier's grave, hie comrades took - from the unconscious sleeper the mementoes he could no longer cherish—the well worn Bible, the parting gift of a loving mother; the needle book; the handiwork of a darling rister, the pictures of dear ones at home, and other souvenirs of atTection—now priceless treasures to those who would mourn ins loss. In relating this incident,.
