Usefid bfonnation. To make Scotch tweed impervious to water, use this receipt : In a buck et soft water put a half pound of sug ar of lead arida ludf ;found of pow dered alum ; stir this at intervals un til it becomes clear, pour it off into another bucket and put the. garment therein, let it remain for twenty-four hours, and then hang it up to-,dry without wringing. . - Peach leaves, bruised, it is said, are a sfiebific for _wounds made _by t ! mild in man or beast or for y huh cut. - Lockjaw is prevented y band agiiig the leaves on twice a day. Paper can be made stick to walls which have been whitewashed -by dissolving glue in good strong vinegar and washing them with the solution. Heat fp the glue is. dis solved and then apply with a brush. The bark of hickory, placed 'wher ever red ants abound, W3ll very soon cause them to disappear. ' We know that common lard, on ' a plate, se where the places are infeited, as soon as they come in contact with the lard, they stick and die. . . Small bars of carbolic soap is bet ter to keep away moths than camphor, at one-thud the cost. It is much stronger than the exhalation thrown off, and retains its "status" longer. Try it. Oil your door-locks and latches ponce in two or three months. It will .add to your comfort and will make these necessary things last longer. • Your cellar should be whitewashed once a year, and have a thorough cleansing two or three times a year. Let it be ventilated daily unless there are open windows, and even then it will add to its purity. : Remove the sprouts from your po tatoes and keep them in the dark. They should be always covered. Well-kept old potatoes should be eat , en well into July. They are much wholesomer than the half-grown new ones selling at so high a rate. How to Build a Dora-Drib. How to have a rat-proof corn-crib is a great question among farmers. A correspondent of the New York Farmers Club gives the following experience: "I have a corn-crib that has stood for twenty years,. and has never had a, rat, and but one mouse in it, to' my knowledge. Posts ten or twelve. feet long and eight inches square ; mortise two feet from one end ; for end-sills, two inch mor tise with tusk. Taper post from sill to the end, by hewing off inside until the end is reduced to four inches di ameter ; make smooth with draw kmife, and nail on tin smooth half way to the end, below the sill. Let sills be eight inches square, also, end tie them and the rafter plates strong with moderate inter-ties. Brace well, and lath up and down with three quarter inch ; dovetail or counter-sink joists crosswise ; lay the floor, and board np the ends with ungrooved boards ; let each bent be twelve feet long, six feet wide at the sill, and seven and a half feet at plate ; and if fall to peak, it will hold 250 bushels.. I never had an ear to heat on account of the great width. If preferred, lay the floor with lath or narrow boards, with room for ventilation. Each post should stand on stone, about -three inches from; the ground, and, each stone have foundation two feet square and below the frost. 11MC'OVATIN6 OLD CITRBANT Old currant bushes are among the most unpromising things with which oue has to deal ; their tangle and mishapen_stalks present pu zzl e to the novice.. Whatever is done should be undertaken 'tinning the first mild spell, ns the currant puishes very early. The _ bush will probably have numerous shoots starting from below the ground, near the surface; cut out all but four or six of these, according to the size of the plant, leaving the most - healthy looking ones, and taking care to have these as equally distant as possible. The fruit is borne on wood two or more years old. One year old wood is distinguished by its different color and buds. Cut out all weak shoots of this kind, and shorten the stronger ones two-thirds or one-half. Manure around the bushes, and when dry weather approaches nuilch. Make the old bushes do their best, andstart plantation, which will come into bear ing in two years. PLAST IJEW HILLS OF Coax Luz.— _\ writer of an exchange paper advo catea planting an occasional hill in every corn field late, or taking pains to replant the missing hills, and gives tho following reasons for it: "If the weather becomes dry during the fill ing time, the silk and tassel both be come dry and dead. In this condi tion, if it should become seasonable, the silk revives and renews its growth, but the tassel doei not recover. Then, for want of pollen, the new silk is un able to fill the office for which it was designed. The pollen •from the re planted corn is then ready to supply the silk, and the filling is completed. He says nearly all the abortive ears so common, in all corn crops, is caus ed by want of pollen, and that he has kmown ears to double their size in this second filling. A NEW WarrEwAsu ron Wsu.s.— Soak one-fourth ctf a pound of glue over night in tepid water. The next day put it into a tin vessel with a quart of water, set the vessel in a kettle of water over the fire; keep it there till it boils, and then stir until the glue is dissolved. Next put from six to eight pounds of Pans• white into another vessel, add hot water and stir until it has• the appeyrance of milk of lime. Add the sizing, stir well, and apply in the ordinary way while still warm. " Paris white " is sulphate of barVa, and may be found at any drug or paint store. MINCED liftrrros.—This is a very useful preparation of cold mutton, and will be found excellent for a change. Cat slices off a cold roasted leg of mutton, and mince them very tine ; brown some flour in butter, and moisten it with some gravy; salt and pepper to taste, and let it simmer about ten or fifteen minutes to take of the raw state of the flour; add an other lot of butter and some parsley, chopped fine, then add the minced meat, and let it simmer slowly, but not boil or the meat will be hard.
