For he who blesses most is blest; And God and shall own his worth Who toils to leave as a bequest And added beauty to the earth. And, soon or late, to all that sow, The time of harvest shall be given; The flowers shalrhloom, the fruit shall grow, If not ou earth, at least in heaven. Soiling instead of Pasturing. We hold it to be indispensable; that farmers in the Atlantic States, where and labor are high and produce on the whole cheap, must avail them selves of some more profitable man-• agement of their lands than hereto fore. If they do not, it may be better if money making from their business is the object,) to emigrate to where lands are cheaper and markets in iaanufacturing or mining districts equally good as New York or Phila delphia. There are, however, various reasons oftentimes, why a persons should not leave the paternal acres, and if it can be shown that he can double his pro fits by a new and better system, it is often greatly preferable for ' himself and family to remain surrounded by domestic, social and religious associa tions and privileges, than to enter upon the untried hardships of - a new settlement. • Our heading shows how this may be done. In the great dairy section of this State, within 40 miles of Phil adelphia, and where 'there is access by rail, milk or butte or cheese' are relied ou for the chief profits of the farm. Now if, independent of other products, where 20-cows are usually kept in the ordinary way, and by soil ing 40 cows can be better kept on the same land, and yield proportionally more milk and butter, the problem would soon be solved. - CaM this be done? All fair experience says it can, and many who have tried it hero and in England say that three, times the number of cows can be equally well -kept on the same land. Quincy on Spiting says : "There is no propotition in nature more true, than that any farmer may maintain, upon thirty acres of good arable land, twenty head of cattle, in better condition condition, with more profit, with more comfort to the ani mals, with less labor, and less cash advance, to himself; than ho at pres ent'usually expends upon a hundred acre's. In addition to which, he will have the great satisfaction of seeing, in time, ever square inch of his land productive ; instead of seeing as he does now, not more than one part in lour of his farm producing anything; or, at least, anything that will pay the expense of harvesting, pasturing them, eows, instead of pasturing them, both makes and saves. It saves inside fences, which in this vicinity it appears by a recent statement in the l'raelical Farmer, costs to keep up, $.48 per acre. It saves land—it saves numnie. It increases; the pro duction of milk and butter, taking a period of 8 or 9 months ; although when grass is fresh' iu early spring there is an increase of mill:, which cows give over that of being confined in the yard ; yet when the weather gets warmer and flies abound, with pasture getting, a little scarce, the itiuount given in the yard or stabl , where there is'shade, shade, she er and water, soon exceeds the o er. The question, are cows LVi hea . y in confined yards as on the pi .turage system, can be fully answer in the affirmative. We think a s all yard, supplied with sheddi'pg a ' trees for shade and protection' is referable to being tied in the stabl . In this yard they can walk a littl• about, or rub themselves against ' post. It will be observed, cows • a field when eating are mostly stun • g still, and the ex ercise they do ake of their own ac cord is to In t food, or to protect ~ n themselves om the weather. t j r How - cep up a supply of green food wmtad seem to be, in this coun try, t 4 great point on which the adop on of the soiling system may to —but We think 'here there is no d' culty. , . .Fall sown rye; sown probably twice •as thick as ordinary and in rich ground, will give a supply ; of green food early in spring, till orchard grass and clover, mixed, are ready for mow ing. ' Oats should also' be sown, four bushels to the acre, as early as the ground will admit, to come in after the first cutting of grass, and before the sown corn. The latter will be found to' be the great staple crop of the.soiling system. The first sowing in drills, 3 feet apart, and at the rate of three bushels to the acre, should be en or before.the - first week of the sth month (May), and successive sowings should be made ten days or two weeks apart. Sown Indian corn i; a wonderful provision of nature as food for stock. An immense weight of it can be grown on an acre • it is eaten greedily and is mostiluitiotts, promoting the secretion of milk more than any other . kind of food. It abounds iu rich saccharine matter. We have seen beautiful sugar made from stalks of Indian corn. Any ex el.-Ss of it, not consumed by•the cows' green, can be cured for winter pro a,:nler; and is better than anv lz . nd of hay. The cultivation of roots— :agar beets and rota bag,as—should also enter into the soiling system. Independent of their merits as a green succulent food in winter season, the !:':Foes and tops make in the fall a til. -ai-Ant change from 'other food.— / . 1 " 1 ''i . .., 'll Farineo.
