i st kA o w i e • - - - 'l ' : 1:1' '1 rhiltot Os% WiesPOWAlt 460 J ournal, Me Ferri -*bit from Glenn Milk Pa.;`e.s follows : During the .Summer ` Seanott; or beginningof Autumn, we seldom escape more or less draught, so:niacin, as "(Win? the= latter part of August l lB69, it na so !moils as materially to' injure the paforage, and fa oceterion a great retion: m. the amount-cif milk and better. -Dat iingthe trying portion of last year, I wan. much pleased to see that numbers of farmers in this neighborhood, had had sufficient foresight greatly to'di= minish the evil. This was accomplish ed by the Spring-sowing of Indian Corn, to be cut while green and given to the .cows. Some persons' sowed the corn thickly, -others drilledit the latter killing the advantage of working with a cultivator while young, lessening the weeds, keeping the ground inletter condition, and producing a' heavier crop. What anxiety niay be prevented by this prudent management, and how great ly it addi to the comfort of cattle at a time when the grass is 'so dried, that it burns like tinder on the appli cation of fire. Some . seasons the rains are sup plied so regularly, that the pasture does not fail until the approach of winter. When we are so favored the green corn may remain uncut till the failure of grass from frost, and then be used for soiling, or it may be cut, dried, and kept for winter, when it will be' found much more nourishing for the cows than fodder from corn, which has ripened the grain. The usual quantity for sowing broadcast is from 3 to 4 bush els ; drilled in, half that amount will suffice. Farmers who have tried this method of keeping up their supply of milk and butter, during the scorching heat of summer, or after Autumn :frosts have diminished the crop of grass, I think Will never again depend upon uncertainpasture. The amount of land and seed required is certainly insignificant, compared with the re turn which it affords, to say nothing of the feeling of satisfaction which it produces, to see animals secure from the misery of a short allowance of focd. It will-be a very great improve ment in American husbandry When the cattle shall not only be supplied liberally daring the grazing season with green food for soiling, but also ' with a sufficiency of roots, beets, car rots, turnips, to alternate with the dry food of winter. B. Hill and Drill Corn. Among the experiments tried du ring the year by Prof. Daniels, on the Experimental Farm of the University of Wisconsin, were some to test the comparative methods of hill and drill planting - of conk, both for grain pro duction and when designed for forage. Corn planted in hills yielded 5.4 per cent. less than in drills. The gene • appearance of that, in hills was much the best, however, the ears being larger and filled better at the tips. That, in hills bad 10.9 -per cent. In the experiments with turn as a forage crop, equal quantities of land were sown broadcast and planted in drills, three and one-half feet apart ; seven bushels of seed to the acre being used in each case. That planted in drills gave the best forage and the greatest amount. In another experiment cloven bushels per acre were sown broadcast, .and seven planted in drills. In this case the broadcast sowing gave the largest yield: Prof. - Daniels remarks, in his report, that one ree s ni broadcast sowing requires more seed is that all the seed is not covered, and birds and grasshoppers carry off much that is uncovered. He suggests as a better method for those laving grain drills that they sow nine bushels to the acre, using each third tooth of the drill. Comfortable Stalls for Cattle. One of the L most disagreeable chores a farmer boy has to do is to sit down to milk a stable cow. He feels cross and so.does the animal, and the con sequence is he does not get a full flow of and she is gradually dried up. To make your cow stable 'comfort able put down a two inch plank where their hind feet stand, putting an inch strip under the edge of it towards the cow's head so as to,give it an . incli nation toward the aisle or walk. Now fill the space from this plank to the forward part of the - stall with sawdust or similar material a depth of about lour inches—a level with the upper edge of the plank. By this ar rangement the excrement and urine are mostly dropped behind the plank in the walk, leaving a high, a dry and warm bed for the animal. It is as easy for her feet as though she stood upon the soil of mother earth—as warm a bed as known to a human being._ hare had the fixtures in use about a month, and to-day the hams and flanks of my cols and calves are as clean and dry as in the summer. About 'once a week there needs an addition of sawdust to the bed. Just the comfortable looks of the cattle in evening when they are reposing upon their comfortable bed is worth - many limes the cost of the fixture.— West ersi Farmee. CONSTIPATED CATTLE,-H. Narsh, Paulding county, Ohio, writes the Rural that his experience has taught him that, from one-quarter to one half pound' each of common salt and Epsom salts, will save hundreds of cattle's lives that annually die from constipation or dried 4 "manifold." if given in time. He has given this dose but 'once to cows that had pas sed bloody urine faeces for several (lays, and it' operates quickly and thoroughly as a physic, and the pa tient soon recovers. He adds : "I believe that many cattle are supposed to have bloody f murrain. when they pass bloody urine and discharges, when the only trouble is the "mani fold " has become so dry that there is no passage through them ; then a tho rough purging would bring them all right. Cattle will lick up the salt readily when given them: BURNT SUOI2C OR CARAMEL.—Take one teaspeinnfuland a half of . white sugar, and put it into a ladle 'over the fire and stir with a woodenapoon. When the sugar is black, add ofwater one gill and a half ; let it cool, strain and keep in a bottle. It is used for coloring soup, gravy, and. other dish es, and can be put in cream to Color it.
