After his father's death, 'his undo, Sawn Mans, Governor of Pennsylvania, procured for the subject of this notion a cadetship at West Point. and at the age of 17, he entered the Mili tary Academy July 4, 1828, where be remained until he graduated, June 8, Mel. In July fol lowing, ho entered the services' Second Lieu tenant in the Fourth Infantry. lie remained in the army until March 31 18;M, when he re signed and engaged in civil engineering until the time of the Florida war in 1837, when be re entered the army and served as volunteer against tho Florida Indians as Lieutenant and Adjutant of a regiment of ,Pennsylvania whin tars, from October, 1837,40 Amal, 1838. While in the field he was elected Major of the regi ment to fill a vacaney, but the regiment was disbanded on the expiration of its term. of ser vice, before his commission was received. (In somPof the records the stiriatian name is erro noonsly entered as "Wat.r ; ind " Jcany'instead of "THOME." At the close of the Florida war he was engag ed by a New Orleans Railway and Canal Com pany, as civil engineer. While in their employ among the swamps of Louisiana, his health be came unpaired and he returned to his home in Pennsylvania, where he was confined about year with sickness. On his recovery he came to Marion, in MO, and was engaged in 'government s u rvey and civil engineering until the time of the Mexican war. Early in the winter of 1846-7, when it was un derstood that one regiment of volunteers was apportioned to, or at least would be accepted from lowa (then a Territoryl, ho cordmenced raising'ntid drilling volunteers with a fair ex pectation of being one of the field officers of the regiment, but the ten (during war) U.S. regi ments being substituted for State Volunteers, these volunteer organizations were discontinued and the appointment of Moors ' thrown nomi nally into thehands of the President, but real ly into the hands of the Congressional delega tions instead of being loft to an election by the men. • Being of the wrong politics (s wing) to expect a commission under such circumstances, in the state of party feeling then existing in biers, ho determined (through considerations readily an predated by any one who has been zealously engaged in rauung volunteers) to servo in the war then Whig waged against a foreign nation. In April, 1817, ho entered the ranks as a private soldier in Company K, 15th Infantry, one of the (during war) regiments of which Ozo. W. Mon- GAX was Colonel. In May following ho was ap pointed Sergeant Major of the regiment, and in this capacity served in the battles of Contreras, Churnbusco, Moline del Bay, and in the main assaulting column on the castle of Chepultepec, and the success of that undertaking, in the opinion of many, was duo to his personal skill and bravery more than to that of any other man. For his meritorious conduct in the bat; ties around the city of Mexico, ho received an ,appointment as Lieutenant in the Second Begi meut U.S. Dragoons, , which was promptly de cline& He remained in service until after peace . was concluded, and the regiment disbanded Au gust 7, 1848.• At the close of the Mexican-car he returned to Marios, and was united in marriage with Miss SARAH GRAY. He resumed the practice of civil engineering, until the recent rebellion, when on the fi rst of Jane, 1861, having received the appointment of Additional Paymaster, Mu ted States Army, he proceeded to Washington, D.C., and entered.upon duty.. November 27, 1861, ho received notice of his. appointment as ,Brigadier-General U.B. Vols., and reported In hccerdmice with instructions to Maj.-Gen. Kai roil, commanding the Depart ment of Missouri. In April, 1862, he reported to Major-General Girsivr, was assigned to the command 'of the /bath Division of the Army of Tennessee (vice Brig.-Gen. Pnravriss, captured at the battle of Shiloh), and remained in command of this di vision durin g the ridge of Corinth, until the reb .els under • 13/1&IIII,E0ABD evacuated . that place. Ho was assigned to the command of the post at Corinth, during the expedition to Inks, and had erected, under the superintendence °leapt. F. E. Puna, U.S. Engineers, the batteries, which subsequently served such impertantpur pose during the battle of Corinth. He continu ed in the service, doing the duty of a Major- General most of the time until the close of the war, when be was honorably discharged from the service (together with 114 other general officers), announced in general orders No. 135, from the War Department,. August 24, 1865. The entire period, of his service in the U.S. Mili tary, including regular army and folanteer, was about thirteen years. Two years ago hist Juno he received a par alytic stroke, which very much impaired both mind and body. In July last he received a sec ond, which con fi ned him to the house, and much of the. time to his bed. Monday previous to his death be received a third stroke, and en Tees; (lay about 6, p.m., he expired. Thus paned away one who had done g wl service for our country in her hour of nee, bravo soldier and skillful general on the fide ' battle. As a man and a soldier he reminds us of Gen. Geo. H. Tuowas (whose decease preced ed his own only a few days) more than any oth er army officer. He was an esteemed citizen, I a.kind husband, and an affectionate father. Of unassuming and retired &position, ho bht seldom referred either to the stirring scenes !or army life through which be hil t dassed, or to his own views arid feelings hire to personal religion, beyond the privacy of is own family. He was always armfuls to have his children observe the Sabbath, attend church and Sab bath-school. And ho bad when in health ex pressed to his companion the wish that he was • a christian. But towards the close of his life, the state of his mind was such as to unfit him for any satisfactory conversation: Ho was buried in the Marion Cemetery, April 21. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Amet. B. Mszensu., and were attend ed by many of those who bad been his corn panions.hi arms, and &large number of e ibize nil. He leaves a wife and three children and many' friends to mourn his loss. Emoi OF THE BR&D FORD Itzronzza : I was much pleased with the Rev. Mr. Mares sketch, lately published in your paper, of the Moravian Missions in old= time, and especially of those located in airs county, as well as those of .11ethlehem and Naza reth. I much hope the proposed plan of a monthly or semi-monthly publication to contain gleanings of the past, both in regard to men and things in Northern Pennsylvania, and else where in the State, will be carried out by our now Historical Society. We think nothing of paying two dollars for a new novel at any time ; now take the monthly parts of such a publica tion as the " Olden Time" [I am improvising a title for instance], might easily , be made, for two dollars per annum, and we Weald place up• on our book-shelves volumes growing in value every hour, and which would in fact become heir-looms in every family. in Northern Penn sylvania. Besides contributing matter for its pages freely, let any one whomay undertake it, put ma down for ten copies per annum, payable in advance. " • • Mr. Cairr has exhausted all the important features of our local Moravian history, but I beg to add a memorandum deriifed from my own Note-Boot, containing facts not wholly Without interest to the careful student of our hisfory : There never was any settled affiliation between the Moravian, when in Georgia, and Warr:- new; but in the year ,1741, on his return to Pennsylvinis from &Murrill', he was desirous of forming'a settlement of free blacks in the in tenor of Pennsylvania, and accordingly pur chased two tracts of land, each containing four thousand acres; but after having made the purchase, finding the white population unfriend ly to his views, ho disposed of the land and Im. provementii to the "United Brethren," who, in the year 1748, held worship in a MULE erected by Warrarremn, and from that circumstance called the place Bethlehem. This tract is about one-quarter of a mile wide on each side of the clear white waters of the " Leehai." On the Aber tract they built a town called Nazareth, nine miles distant. • The European settlers were in those days w and thinly scattered around them. Towanda, May 9,1870.
