I nm NA%Nes hl4llouse 0011142. Probably few farmers are aware 'of the extremely .deleterions effect of strong 'vegetables in' considerable quantities in the eAllfrr of the h o u s e beneath' the apartments occupied bY the inmates. Them is always abase amount 'of exhalation from such heaps, when they beCome heated, as they do by laying in bulk, to say nothing of the decay of moro.or less vegetables in the heap, rind before winter is out these noisome exhalations become so abundant and - so strong as to "scent" the whole house. Fevers and other diseases are the almost invariable result. The doctor's bill ivill generally be enough to have built a good vegetable cellar or pit for storing vegetables. Our friend, David B. Flint, Esq., of Watertown, having noticed several instances of disease in families that could, as he thought, be traced to this practice, addressed an inquiry to the State . Board of Health, composed of the most eminent and competent physic ians, and received the following reply; " Having been requested to give an opinion concerning the effect upon health, caused by strong vegetables in the cellars of occupied dwelling, we would reply. Ist. That while such vegetables are ...tail-eV free from decay the practice ;s probably harmless: 'id. It isyerfectly certain that de caying vegetable matter gives rise, in it way which science has not yet fully explained, to ;e-chnlations which' are poisonous ; that it taints the air with which it is in contact ; that it seems to invite the attack of epidemics; that it diminishes the power of the body to resist disease of every kind ; that it is especially favorable to the iroduction of fevers. :Id. That the air of a cellar cannot Ise prevented from passing through out the building under which it is )laced. For these reasons we are of opinion,: that the practice of storing the pro.. duce of the farm in cellars of dwelling houses, is always attended with danl der, and ought to be given up, since tbe utmost care is rewired in the course of our long winters to prevent (lecomposition from taking place. EMMY L. Bownrrcu, 3L D. GEORISE DERBY, M. D. R. T. DAVIS, M. D. Members of the Massachusetts state Board of Health. Boston, Feb. 14, 1870. The above unequivoCal testimony ft;om so eminent an authority ought to lead to an immediate abandonment of the practice among farmers and others, that is, the stoning of vegeta bles, in large quantities and allowing them to decay.--Mass. Ploughman Our Management of the Potato. Is there another plant in cultivation winch has for such a number of years been subjected to such barbarous treatment as the potato? We get a variety and grow it on for years from cuttings, many cultivators not even taking the trouble to change their seed—so called. Very probably, when we first obtained the variety, it was not of 'gland constitutio», scarcely giving a bloom, and not a seed ball oo a rood of ground. Still we persist iilgrowing it, till—as a useful variety -it is killed. We then purchase an other seedling at'au almost fabulous price, and serve it the same. Are we to continue thus to the end, or shall ..ve adopt a more rational method? I vaai:di not to make assertions, but I do wish my horticultural and agricultur .,l brethren would observe to raise ei.y ye:u• some potatoes from seed, and whenever one is found to possess tlme necessary qualifications, with food strong growth, healthy foilage, _.a,l bearing seed, take care of it; h^.t plant ba::3 a constitution capable f performing all the functions of its Itature.. Can the same be said of a•N ery new iTack variety we get? Nay, ,lam they not—most of them at least— ha,gin to degenerate as soon as they t into cultivation? These ideas 11:ay appear etude enouglt:but prob sbly some of your 'scient i fic -corms !,,,ndents can give us something elab orate ; let it be in plain language, )ever, so that we ordinary mortals many understand.—edr. Country Gen- lIIZOCCE ••1101.i.p`w Hoßxs."—Some time since noticed an item in relation to "hol low horn "in your paper. If a farm , r finds his cows begin to look rough, •• hair tarn the wrong way," leaving the roots of the horns—horns feeling cold, appetite beginning to fail, and milk too, if in milk—if he will open the animal's mouth, and examine the teeth—front ones—he will probably find them very easily moved in their sockets—that is, loose. If so, equal parts of sulphate of iron, copperas, green vitrol and nitrate of potash saltpetre,) ground together—and a taNespoonful of the mixture given ttl (.13- day, either at once or divided, for three or four days, will probably save him from losing cattle with that disetuie. I learned this plan of de tecting the disease anti the remedy, many years ago, from a farmer, and have frequently tested it, and have so far had reason to say to oth rit, try it.—,Country Gentleman.
