Dail* Canal' Walk.
Tani'ng cellar wilhs to protect the
contents Irikm .darap has' Icong been
praotioedin Comma/ England. In
that ..wet-hirinid portion of 'Great'
Britain,:where a fitufday - 5 ex
ception. and not -as here the :rule,
every:precaution is - requisite to pro
tect walls from 110101188,,- and
amongfit these none are lona more
effectual than the WM of coal-tar, -af
ter being airefidly prepared. The
preparation tonskits mmply in boiling
the tar in anyconvenient kettle, until
all the watery parts' are evaporated
and driien-off by the heat, •The tar
is then laid on the walls with n. com
mon white Wash biush, pone or more
thin coats being used, and as the tar
is always laid on in as hot a state as
possible, without destroying the hairs
of the brush, it can be spread on a
rough surface of stone work with an
even, thin coat, and the stone 'or
bricks for ever after become impervi
°us to moisture.' _ •
have often seen buildings so cov
ered, that were first plastered with a
smooth coat of mortar, and laid out
into squares to imitate cut stone work,
and on this coal tar takes remarkably
well. It would, not perhaps, he ad
visable to use lir for outside protect
ion against the weather, where the
black color would be a serious object
ion and unsightly object," but for util
ity there Is no substance so cheap and
at the'same time so efficient' in its
action as a protection to walls against
dampness. One great cause of wet
walls so exposed to cold on the outer
side and a warm moist atmosphere
within, a damp surface on the inside
is absolutely certain to be the result.
This arises from the crdensation of
the humid internal air on the chilled
walls, and the remedy in this case
must be looked for in another way.
To exemplify . this rinciple, let any
one convince by laying a saw
or ax out - of doors, into a cold atmos
pheie, when the thermometer is about
zero. After ten minutes of such ex
posure, bring the article into .warm,
moist air of the louse, an ax or saw
will be at once covered with dew, from
the condensation of moisture from
the internal air on the cold surface.
And this principle is always more or
less active in cellars. The remedy is
temperature upon the outside. as
much as conveniently may be, by cov
ering and partial protection, and
down in the inside by absence of heat,
and your cellar walls will at once dry
up. Attentkni must also primarily
be paid to the matter of drainage.-

Lxmoss Fen l'EvEn.—When persons
are feverish.Or thirsty beyond what is
natural, indicated in some cases by a
metallic taste in the month, especial
ly after drinking water, or by a whit
ish appearance of the greater part of
the surface of the tongue, one of the
best "coolers," internal or external,
is to take a lemon, cut oft the top,
sprinkle oil some loaf sugar, working
it downward with a spoon, and then
suck it slowly, squeezing the lemon,
adding more sugar as the acidity :in
creases from being brought up from
a lower point. Invalids with ie . *,
ishuess may take two or three lemons
a day in this manner with the most
marked benefit by a sense of coolness,
comfort and invigoration. A lemon
or two taken thus at tea-time, as a
substitute for the ordinary supper of
summer, would give many, a comfort
able might, and on awakening after
rest, an invigoration, with an appetitet
to which they are strangers, who will
waive their cup of tea for. supper, or
" relish" and cake, or berries, and
peaches and cream.
SALTING CABBAGE PLANTS.-G. W.
T.. Rahway, N. 3., considers salt ne
cessary to the development of the
cabbage, especially in places far from
the coast. He finds them more crisp,
of better flavor", and to keep better
when salt is used, than without. He
ivies it as follows :
"A few days after setting out the
plants, and when they are damp,
either after a rain or when the dew
is on, I take a small dish of fine salt
and walk =nov o .= theirows, sprinkling
a little-pinch of )3alt on the - centre
leaves of each plant .when the leaves
begin to grow. I repeat the salting,
and when the centre leaves begin to
form the head, I apply salt again,
scattering it over the leaves ; after
this I look them • over occasionally,
and if I find any plants the do not
head well or appear diseased, I sprink
le the salt over freely ; tbis will save
all such plants. A quart :of salt is
sufficient for 500 plants in a season,
although more can be used with safe
ty."—Anterican Agriculturi4.
Sraawaruur FERTI T"" -The fol
. lowing recipe was first tried years
since with, apparent satisfaction.
The growth was vigorous, the crop
• abundant, and the berries large. It
Was, therefore, commended as fitted
to socurendmirable results. Old beds,
under the treatment suggested, are
' said to be even better than new. The
proportions are for a bed thirty by
forty feet. • Commence using the fer
tilizer when the new.leaves are being
put forth, and apply it towards night
two or three times, at intervals of a
\, -, eek between each application. It
' should be dissolved in thirty gallons
of rain or river water. Indeed, if
auythiw_, , be. varied from this, let the
• proportion of water be larger: Nitrate
of potash, sulphate of soda, or "Glatt
. bees salt's," and sal soda—of each
one pound ; of muriate of ammonia,
one quarter of a pound. Keep the
bed well weeded. Tried on old beds,
even, the results as above hinted, are
highly gratifying.—Canada Farmer.
1" The Canada Farmer mentions
a, horse owned by M. • Yodder, of
Springfield, Ontario, which is believed
to be over thirty years old, and is still
faf, plump, and handsome. • Tiventy
tire years agcl he was a dashing road
ster. The Farmer suggests the pro
priety of having prizes at Agricultural
Fairs for the best old horses, as, while
any one may hate a good colt, it is
only a good, kind horsemanihat can
show a sound, active old horse.
l'ommitv.—,Set the hens early, es
pecially if you breed pure stock, for
early chickens that do well make the
finest birds, and the .prize -takers at
the shows. Geese should hatch ear
ly ; but kir ducks and :turkeys, the
warmer weather of May is more im
portant than t7►e growth they will
make. •
