I will be=' gm with the _ ' - • - EMU:, nos& In the spring 40.868 I parchassul from B. B. BlissrOne pound of this vsriety, which exit into forty , e , ht single eyes, and planted in the en with no extra cultivation , yiel me eighty-two poUnds of fine large pota toes: I found thein to keep remark ably well through the winter, showing no signs of rot. - In the early part of May, 1869 I planted this product in -the field in rows, sets about one foot apart- in the row, and in August took up forty bushels of fine, clean, good shaped potatoes, which are keeping well so far, showing no indications of rot. In taking them up I had them planed at once in the cart (the pickers following the plow), and stored in thecellar,, without sun-burning, which f. think is ono of the canes of rot. In preparing the ground for p6ta toes I always manure the ground thnrougbly, and plough tho manure in and harrow well,/nd mark out the rows three feet apart. I prefer this plan to Hie 'old method of manuring in the row, as the contact of the man ure with the potato has a tendency to cause it to rot in the ground. In the spring of •1869 I planted one pound of Climax, which yielded mo over forty-five pounds of fine hand some potatoes ; also at the same time, one pound of BREESE'S Pnouric, from which I obtainod only twenty five pounds. gave these last two varieties no extra cultivation—my object not being. to raise an extra crop, but to test, what they would do under fair culivation ; another year's trial will be required to decide on their merits as field crops. I also planted and cultivated in the same manner four pounds of WORCEMP., OE TtrfT I Y POTATOES, from which I obtained 2i bushels. These are not a large, but,are remark ably fine eating potato. I cooked a few of them when about half-grown, and they were like little bags of meaL Also planted at the same time four pounds of , VANTMVEII These yielded me about two and one-half bushels of fair potatoes, but did not come up to my expectaticps. For a late keeping potato I have found none superior to the 11= While most other varieties have sprouted and shriveled in the spring, this one still remains hard and firm ; it yields well, always turns out, of the ground clean—and in five years that I cultivated it, I have never ' seen a sign of rot. I find this variety to yield much better from cut sets—un less in very dry season they grow on until the frost kills the tops. THE nAasasolis gave me a remarkable tine yield last year ; but as I did not measure the amount planted, I am not able to give the product per bushel. , Some of my neighbors complain of the Harrisons rotting ; so far there is no rot in mine, which I attribute to their being taken into the cellar as soon as dug. I would recommend the last named ‘arieties for late - planting, and the Early Rose for early use.—E. S. H. in Practical Farmer A NEW METHOD OF GRAYTING. —MT. Sullivan Hutchinson, of Bristol, in this State, has recently patented a process for making fruit trees from ilmipt Mr. Hutchinson claims that by this method such fruit bearing limbs as may be conveniently spared, van be transformed into independent trees that will continue bearing from the first year regularly, as before. The process is as follows : Into the limb which is intended for the future tree, small roots are grafted, or in some way inserted under the bark, just above where the limb is to be severed. Such limbs are required to be from one to two inches in diam eter. Below these roots the branch is girdled. A small box filled with earth is inclosed about the limb in a position to 'embrace these roots. Du ring the sunimer these roots grow, and the connction is formed with the limb above. - The following fall the box will bo filled with roots, when the limb may be cut from the parent stock and set in the ground: It is claiined that the next year this new tree will bear fruit just as though it had not been severed from the origin al tree.—New Hampehire Mirror and Farmer. {lns•sme IVAeoxs.—Few people fully appreciate the importance of thoroughly lubricating the axles, etc., of wagons and carriages, and still fewer know what are the best meth ods of applying them. A well made wheel will endure common wear from ten to twenty-five years, if care is taken to use the right kind and prop er =mitt of grease'; , but if this mat ter is not attended to,, they will be used up in five or six years. Lard should never be used on a wagon, for it will penetrate the hub, and work . 2 . 4 itself out around the tenons of the spokes, and spoil the wheel. Tallow is the best lubricator.for wooden ex letrees and castor oil for iron. Just greese enough should be applied to the spindle of a wagon to give it a light coating ; this is better than more,. for the surplus put on will work out at the ends, and be forced by the shoulder bands and nut washers into the hub around the outside of the boxes. To oil an axletree, that wipe the spindle clean with a cloth wet with spirits of turpentine, and then apply a few drops of castor oil near the shoulders-and end. One teaspoon ful is sufficient for the whole.—Ex- f: l lTilgP HINTS Amur WORK.—Clearing up Fence Rows is good for early spring. There are no leaves and grass to con ceal big stones, against which, in smnmer, one is apt to strike the bush sehythe,- hook, and axe, and a man can see much better what he is about. NVhen the brush is cut, and the soil is loosened .by the out coming frost, the ground may be plowed much more easily than in summer Manure may be hauled while snow lasts, or while the frozen ground per mits easy wheeling on plowed land. Work over that which is liable to heat, and mix with litter not needed as beading. Working Animals, both oxen and horses, should be gradually accustom ed, to labor, if they have been stand ing idle, or it will tell hard upon them, and galled necks and backs ,be the result._ Should such trouble oc cur, bind on wet ragi at „night, and take all pressure off the wounded parts by ',adv.- EICI2II/ .Eiap.IWLWAT.
