In the sear 1864, when the oil imeitennentwaa

and Western New.Yerk, some parties nutlertook
to sink a well on what is known as the "Beebe
Farm," hf Bloomfield, Oribirict coonty t N.
tient) , miles from Rochester and seren..from
Limit On different oonalons in haw yeat4
gas had been seen to issue out of the earth, and
in some instances even had been ignited with a
match, so that, as the experts said, there were
very strong "smite° indications" of oiL
Aiter boring fifteen feet they . strnck a rock et
rod sandstone, and which, on further boring,
proved *6 extend indefinitely downward.
At a depth of about 480 thel, the instruments
struck an immense fissure in the rock and drop
ped as Ulu a estrum.. _
A volume of gas rushed out with great force
and loud noise, teeming to be a vent to an hu
merus° pressure of gas below Min an outlay
of something like two , thousand dollars, the
well *was now abandoned, and all hover of eve
finding oil extinguished. -
In 1866, a party came to witness the wonder
fulflow of gas from the pipe (which the oilmen
had left projecting about fifteen feet out of the•
ground), and one of the gentlemen climbingup
to the top, as a matter of amusement and ex
pe struck a match and held it to the ori
fite, which is'about six inches indiameter. With
loud explosion the gas ignited, and a sheet of
flame nearly thirty feet high shot np into the
air (with a proportionate width), and in, a few
minutes the old derrick with all its surround;
- ings was consumed. The sound of the flame
ran he heard a mile, and at certain times its
light' shining on all the hills around and clouds
above, like a Vesuvius; can be seen thirteen
mike away. I say (yin, for at the present mo
ment the fire may be seen tearing itself from
the bowels of the earth in the same mad and
terrible manner as it might have been forty
eight months ago !
Well, what of it do you est:. Well, let's We.
About a year since, Mr. 11tecR, a Newtork gen
tleman, boifght the place and conceived the as
tonishing idea of turning the bai6ing well,
which has hithertO been a mere wonder, to the
benefit of millions of earth's inhabitants. How
is that? you ask. Now listen. Prof. Warm, of
New Zork, was sent fur and made a thorough
chemical examination of its properties, and
found it to consist of a peculiar though remark
ably strong character of burning gas, but with
a slight admixture of carbonic acid. •
The gas, unlike our manufactured article, can
be inhaled into the lungs with impunity:
The issue from the well is between three hun
dred thousand and four hundred thousand feet
daily, or about the amount consumed IV the
whole city of Rochester. It can be purified at a
cost of 30 cents per thousand feet, sons to make
a light of surpassing clearness anc brilliancy,
and that is all the cost of ntatalactuepg.
Gas in Itocheater is worth about three dollars
per thousand. A party of enterprising gentle
men from Elmira now have hold of the matter,
ions AUNOT, in., Dr. Ei.uninor, N. I'. Faascrr,
and E. N. FilltillTE, who propose to capture the
great gas giant of Bloomfield, and smothering
him, take him to the city to give light to all
those who are obliged to walk in darkness or
pay exorbitant prices for an inferior quality of
gas made by the hand of man.
Mr. HICKS has disposed of the property (ex
cept a small share which he reserves) to the
stock company Gentlyformed, for a handsome
sum, end the abandoned oil well which two
years ago would not, have sold for as much as a
box of matelwa, proruises to carry one of the
most ma,gnitieent moneyed enterprises of the
day.
Ms Ms. Suroso : Your correspon
dent, "OBSERVER, - in speaking of the progress
of Bradford county, was a little deficient in re
lation to the succession or prop, ress of our coun
ty papers.
The first effort to start a county paper was
made by Was. Intrame, of Williamsport, who
circulated a subscription end turned his efforts
over to 'Thomas Stamsost, who, in 1813, publish
ed the Bradford Gazette, the first newspaper
printed in the county—the other being located
at Meansville (now Towanda), near the new
Episcopal church, and as sonie,of the older in- !
habitants will recollect, opposite Jesse
arrVa taller shop. He continued to publish
the Gazelle about one year, when he sold his
interest in the paper to Bran. RIDLIWAY, who
continued to print it for three or four years.
During that time, and while the editor was on
the days of appeal as County Commissioner,
Orrartts A. HOLDEN, who had care of the pa
per in his absence, issued six numbers or a pa
per entitled " The Thous, - the object of which
was to ads ertise the unseated lands, a majority
of the Commissioners being federal!. andopiais

numbers of the " roost" under the. direction'
of the County Treasurer, SIMON KISMET, end
issued the same a, their dates matured. The
scheme did not succeed, as the Treasurer did
not think it prudent to sell op .n notice,
and thus gilded the " Ter a."
The first regular federal papi r, called the -t

Lewis It. FNANK:I. It was continued by him
about one year, when it was turned over to the
management of OCTAVII.7B A. HOLDEN, who only
continued its publication a short time. :
In 1818, the Bradford Gazette was purchased

ROME.—Ma. At.votta : I beg. leave
to make a slight correction of a statement by
"Blurt:a" in your latt number. Ho repro.
penis me as saying that the name " Busquehan
nab " means " crooked," iiustead of " muddy and
tily." By referring to the REPORT= of that
date (March 11), we find that the paragraph
reads in this way : "Basquefiannah" means '
"broad, shallow river "Instead of "muddy, rily"
river.
My authority kw this statement may be found
in SrEwsirr PEARCE'S "Anoxia of Lucerne Coun
ty," published in 1856. In a special article on
the Susquehanna river, on page 158, ho nays:
"iiimqnehatuudi is an Indian name, signifying
'broad, shallow river'; its current is Ordiriarily
two and a-half miles au horir, in high water tire
miles an hour," dr.
The author of the work spoken of above, is a
member of the Luzerne County Historical So
ciety. Among the authorities consulted in the
preparation of his work, ho cites Brost, CRAP-
Ilecketeelder, Rev. Gus. PEcs, t
HOLLISTER, DRAKE, WATSON, TAYLOE, and °di
ers.
As the Vuuddy, rily character of the Sus
quehanna is only noticeable on high. water oc
casions, and as its "broad, shallow" condition
is the usual and general characteristic, it is but
reasonable to infer that the latter meaning of
the Indian name is the correct one.
Will any kind friend inform us in which of the
Indian - dialects thwword may be found? Among
the Iroquois, a number of different names with
appropriate meanings prevailed for different
parts of the same river or lake. Thus the Onon
dagas had a name - for that pad of the river
within their boundaries. It was termed in their
language " Ua-ma-sio-Pert-nn-neh,
or "flpirat Island River," the prefix Ga-bun'-da
meaning "river.'
I heartily.commend the persistency of friend
"Nlit.rrrs" inisupporting what be believes to
be the trite moaning of the name in question.
It is a peenliarity of the Indian geographical
name that they have in all cases special mean
ings. It is to be hoped that a Historical Soda.
ty may be formed in our county, by which he
study of Such interesting subjects may be fa
cilitated.
In the description of the Laney map in* the
same issue (March 3), the words "most easteni
corner" should have been most western corner.
As to "J. A. M.'s" ceimmunication,.it may be
necessary to state that it was my intention to
follow up the subject Iliad introduced by sketch=
es of Sablikth-school history of the other
churches, but at the very commencement of en
quiries for such purposes I was convinced that
"my informant" had made a serious mistake.
If "J. A. 3L" had not followed up the matter
so quickly, I should have had the gratification
of making tle necessary corrections. He has
spared me the labor by his interesting and re
liable article. But one fault can be found with
it the words "hie blunders" are not in good
taste, applicable, or courteous.. TAUUM.

Your corirpondent, in conclusion, says "J

The old - Wyalusing circuit was constituted in
1814, and embraced the following territory:
Nichols, Athens and Litchfield, Hornbrook.
Windham, Rush, teltaysville, a part of tne Lit

present Wyalusnig circuit. A parsonage was
built on the Wyalusing creek, a few rods above
Stevensville. It is:itill standing, and occupied
as a dwelling. It is situated on quite an emi
nence, and his some beautiful evergreen .trees
before it. It was probably built as early as
180 or ISIG. I have often passed by it and
thought of the holy s'nd now sainted men who
used to live in it, and went forth into this then
wilderness country to preach the words of ever
lasting life to its scattered inhabitants.
