Improvement is the ruling star of the nineteenth century. Men of every class, - and in nearly all pursuits, ac knowledge its sway. It has already brought incalculable - good to the farm in,g interest. Farmers arc, perhaps,. too slow to acknowledge this ; and too slow to avail themselves of the , - - . proffered advantages of real improvoi unposed True, they are ' some times ijnposed upon by urtsc rupulons and uprincipled lovers (Again; and hence their cautious fear of what is really valuable. But thin need nbt often occur. Any' ne, possessiagpte ordi nary intelligence of Our common farm by timely investigation: aided by gooa judgement, and a careful. Tend irg of Agricultural papers, may •usu ally avoid thespare Of the mere pre tender. Animas that you — esui depend On to t ransmit their good qualities through !panty generations, must have . had a perfect descent from pure blooded :,took. If an animal has had a de fective ancestry, though in many past generations, such generations, .such imperfection may show , itself at any t hue in the young stock from such ; a source. In matter alarm stock, its perpet uation is controlled by certain fixed principles of breeding. There is a nreat difference in the I weeds of our r 'stock, and in the animals of the breeds. Some fatten easily, and come to maturitytbarly, and oth ,Ts do not. Some posSess remarkable milking qualities, while others yield sparingly. Some are noted for their butter qualities, and others are fine workers. Now, we want to search out and find the rules . which govern the transudssiou of various qualities, that we may be enabled at will to breed animals possessing Cie distinct characteristics we desire. The bpd maxim that " like produces - like," is a good one, and is safe to follow. The male parent generally influenc es the. size and external form of the iffspring, and the female the vital power, health and constitution. The best thorough-bred will degen erate, unless supplied with nourishing food, and kept in general good health. In-mid-in breeding should be avoid ed generally, and only allowed .when Loth parents are singularly free from defects. Many of our fanners say " but I cannot obtain these improved animals without paying a high price for them." TO encourage unbelieving breeders to make a liberal outlay for good blood, I will refer ,to the following. A breed er recently offered a neighbor of mine, A 33 for all the calves on his place from weaning to twelve months old—he declined the offer—on the adjoining iarms he could have bought calves of the same age from $2 to $6 per head. He said he would not drive them home and keep them three days if they were presented to him. '`Why? The im proved breed of calves could be wade tp-gross 1.700 lbs. at three Years old; the others, if ever, at five or six years; “ne consuming as Much grass, requir i !IL; the same care as the other. Cow n' wt is unnecessary. if you hear of any man's giving a thousand dollars for n cow or two :lions:ma for a bull, you. may i.afely inf,:r he is a layge dealer in cattle or pn.fes.iOnal breeder, and has made what ho thinks a judicious investment for his business. well-bred pigs I can raise, are in demand at $lO to .i;l5 each, at from two to three months (hi. MI the improved varieties of cp pay—their lambs selling from g . .:0 to $25 per head at weaning time. Tbe unproved breeds of poultry pay what is it that don't pay, if the best , :t its kind, lind well cared for? What mongrel sVek does pay? If any, I v hle to find - it out. What prufit is there iu keeping a razor-backed hog until he is eighteen mouths old, to • get two hundred p,mutlt of pork when the same feed given, in,nine months, to a Chester White, Will give you the same quanti ty of pork, or more? Is it nothing to save nine months of carrying slop, and grass, purslain and corn ? If you will keep the Chester White until he is eighteen months old, he will weigh from 450 to 550 pounds, and, perhaps, half as much more. The profit on a hog of good breed is in. his extra weight, at a given age, on a given quantity of food. That breeding fine swine is profitable is evident from the fact that the same men are in the business now that were in it ten years ego ; and most, if not.all of them, in cirertniNtances.—Rock • Journal. POULTRY 11.in-mi.---John J. Moore, of Quakertown, has sent us the result of his experience in raisimr poultry during the year 1869. including the , irst three days of the present year as : —".We kept 30 hens and 4 roosters, a cross of the old Cochin Chinas and White &limas. Daring the above period they laid 3,983 eggs, tf which those that were sold avera ,, - .-d 32 cts. per dozen, 796 of them be ing laid in three winter moths. We raisvil to full marketable size 110 , thickens, selling all that were large :sough for market up to the first of venth-month ati.an a-erage of 30 cents per pound. On .he tenth of twelfth-month I took to market 20 faire of the young ones, among which ere 8 pairs of roosters, the smallest weighing 12 pounds, averaging pounds per pair ; the whole lot re- ding at twenty cents per pound:-=' The. purchasers remarked that they did not look asif they had the cholctii. on the 2nd inst., I took 13 pairs, still younger, 7. pairs of which were roost ers, averaging 11 pounds per pair ; 1b... rest pullets, averaging 9 pounds pempair ; 6 pairs wore sold at 24 cents ;tound, and the balance at 22 cents. he way to do it is simple. Give the. bens plenty to eat, and give the chil dren two cents per dozen for finding the eggs and making the nests. When the chickens are put np to fatten, vary their feed and give them plenty .:f water, gravel, and pounded char eual, and keep the hens and roosters i different pens:—Rucks Co. In. LIME NS A PRMEEVER.- it slacked flute has been frequently recOnamend ed as a preserver for vegetables when .Lured in pits. Recently we heard a gentleman state that he was in the habit of sprinkling it among his ap ples in barrels and bins, and 1w thought delicate fall varieties could thus be kept much beyond their sea son. The lime dust could be easily removed from the apples by unimf cloth or brush, - and it itnparted no flavor to the fruit. The use of lime ia the cellar, as a preservative agent, is a good idea. It acts by absorbing moisture, and if oneindividual in th mass decays, the lime arrests the sprairl of this flif.easn to othost. tlidioaNNWh;:' 1101411141•11 - 19 RCMP% - • • -- MED . - 47 * - ? • 1 11 .
