EDiTOB : " Truth
is stranger than fiction!" Since my last cogi
tationa were sent op for publication, an alarm
ing fact has developed itself in our visually qui
et village. It appears that a young lady of this
place, of highly respectable, parents, a member
of the church, and a Good Templar, whom no
onS ever suspected of violating her obligation
or proving false to her pledge, has been for
years secretly indulging in a practice entirely
prohibited by the rules of the .Good Templars'
organization. While she has steadfastly refus
ed to even taste of whisky, wine or cider, yet it
Is now positively known that during all Ibis
time she has nut been a single week without
her porter ! BO the strangest Tart of this af
fair is, that on Wednesday morning, Zan. 5,
1 t7O, by and with the consent, advice and unit
ten permission of her pastor, and ho a D.D.G.
W.C.T., she started off on a week's tour from
home witlithe solo companion of A - . D(bL'of)
Potter! No wonder that rum and ruin hold
their carnivals in our midst, when such things
are tolerated among temperance people!
Oar new depot lies been in use for more than
a month, but it is so far from Wyabasing we
don't know what is being done there. The rail
road company committed a terrible blunder in
its location. To compel a whole village to trav
el a mile farther than is necessary every time
they go to 'the depot, is wrong, to say .the least.

ROME.—Ain ACCORD : Perhaps you
are not aware of the fact that for some time
past, the Sabbath4ehools connected with . the
Presbyterian and Methodist churches, , in this
place, have been in the habit of holding "month
ly concerts." They were initiated some four
years or more ago by the Union Sabbath-school
under the superintendency of me 0. F. Youxo,
in the Presbyterian church. A year or more
ago, our Methodist brethren started a separate
concert during the summer months. The con=
eerts at the other church are kept np through
out the year.
It would be well worth your while, Mr. Ax-
Tann, to spend a Sabbath evening occasionally
at these instructive exhibitions of Scripture
truths. You tvould be pleased to find that the
lovers of Christ in this rustic Portion of our
county, are busily engaged in soaring the good
reed of the gospel. The Lord of the harveld
will undoubtedly gladden their hearts in earn
ing years by full and bounteous sheavelt.
Last Sabbath afternpon (16th) the anniver
sary of the Sabbath-school in the Presbyterian
church was signalized by a review of concert
subjects for the past year. Tht.eiereises were
conducted by Rev. Dr. Cour. After singing,
prayer, and the reading of an interesting jour
nal by Miss Liz= Coornarou, the Rev. Dr.
read the account of the "Great Supper" in the
14th chapter of Luke. Ho then called out Mr.
ALLEN P. lova°, as this exercise was under his
conductorship last January. Mr. Yotrao gave
a vary brief but able review of the chief points
of this topic, which were brought oat at its first
presentation by the very natural questions of
the children as to the character of the feast, the
qualifications tequimd of the partakers, Ac.,
questions which the conductor answered by
many beautiful and appropriate Scripture texts
from memory.
The next review was prefaced by reading Acts
IG, 23 to M. Mr. Joins 31onAr was then called
out and gave a general idea of the lesson, which
at the February concert was commenced by
reading a graphic newspaper . account of the
great earthquake at Caraeess, and illustrated
by a rough blackboard sketch of prison wal
stocks; chsinsote. The value of this lesson was
'enfnced at the time. by many repetitions of
"that vital and heart-searching question of the
alarmed jailor, " What must I do to be saved?'
For every repetition an apt Scripture :text was
ready. That this lesson carried conviction to
many souls; was shown' by the remark of ore
person, "1 did not suppose that this concert
was going to be turned into a revival meeting."
But how shall we sufficiently admire thnbean
tiful lesson of the " Wonderful Transformation,"
where, by simple chemical experiments, that
great fact in a ehriatian's life, the change of
heart, was clearly exhibited? Had Hicodernits
himself been present, he would 'surely have sc.
knowledged the convincing character of thiS
experimental argument. Our h ~r is warm with
gratitude towards Dr. COLT to, introducing this
valuable analogical illustration In our concerts.
The necessary brevity of this article prevents a
morp detiiiled description of this and the fel
luiring subjects, all by Dr. Cora "The Tower,.
Mark 4, 1 to .9, illustrated by crayon sketch;
"The Gate of Prayer," with blickbectid draw
ing of gate; "litiantifttl Mansions," with model
of house ; "The Way of Lire," Illustrated by
cartoon.
That the Der. Dr. has found time in the midst
of his other cares to plan these interesting lea.
sons, is a wonder to us. His great zeal in the
came of Christ's kingdom' is undoubtedly the
secret of such enthusiasm and industry.
It is a fact that these exercises are invested
with an interest which attracts within reach of
gospel teachings multitudes of persons, young
and old ; who do not usually, from (distance, in
clemency of weather, or that very common
cause, lack of intermit, attend the stated preach
ing-1 and Sabbath-school meetings, though such
meetings may be close by; bnethese rural boa
' thens will gather from 'the hill-tops, glens and
valleys, for miles, to these concerts. It is not
utiniruel to see at our concerts persona who live
from Ell to ten miles from Rome. Thus this
monthly combination of prayer; sermon, essay,
speech, singing, illustrative effects, ho., brings
many within the reach of that noblest 'form of
civilization, the spiritual civilization of ehris
tianity.
In this connection, I -may observe that our
Methodist and other christian brethren are joint
workers with us in carrying .out this glorious
programme. They believe that the. squaring
of the theological circle should not be commit
ted to the tender minds of children, but that it
should be left to the mature intellect of adults.
They remember what the summing , up of all
the commandments' amounts to., They have'
read the 13th chapter Ist Car., Titus, 3--9, and
this very important saying, "Behold how good
and pleasant a thing it is for brethren to dwell
together in unit*" Though it may seem like
cubing opt the old proverbialiams about "gild
lag relined gold" (let me local!e the nal%
"carrying coal to Pittston," *c., yet I will von•
hire to call the attention of the Rev. T. L. W.
to so innehleripture. These texts Will do him
more geed than the moat intense study of dou
ble jubilee statistics.
Let me say bete, from experience, that the
real cause of the failure of winter Sabbath
schools in our back districts, at least, lies in the
obstacles placed in tho nay by our Jong andse
ven winters, deep, snows, brokim and impassa
ble roads, stormy weather, he. This is a more
ingenuous reason for the winter vacation.

RIDSIBUIIV.—According to promise,
I come again before the readers of .your paper.
In my last letter I told them of having a "Big
Indian" here; but in my rambles since, I have
found that there is a goodly number of the
same stamp. They are nearest of kin to the
famous Tammany tribe of New York, and- are
slightly related to the En Klux of the South
wist. They are death on whisky, eloquent in
bombast, and their braggadocio is democratic
to the core ard.when under the influence of
their favorite, "lied Eje," are as • noisy as the
goose that saved the Eternal City, f Rome from
destruction.
One of the members is called " White Hornet,'
and is the most conspicuous bravo of the tribe.
Ho having had business in Canada during the
late war, is a fit leader for his people. He did
carry a revolver, but the too free use of stimu
lants made him lose his nerve, so unfortunate
ly the contents lodged in the bosom of a friend.
It was then thought prudent for him not to
carry it while under the influence of the v twin
brothers, Tom and Jerry, AS he was more like
ly to become a terror to his friends than his
enemies. So you see the world moves here as
well as elsewhere.
The society here is in rather s dull state, with
ono exception. 'Matrimony is the prevailing
epidemic and sometimes proves fatal Old and
young, from the cradle to the grave, are ans.;
ions for companionship in their happiness and
misery. God speed the 4. Nrishes ! for my part
I am not on the list.
A donation was held a few days ago at Cen

The mosque of-Constantinople, the dome of

for long distances around ; and so the now btate

just completed, bums up conspicuous for a
score of miler, is the distinguishiug monument
of this city. It is sumo twelve years since the
new build i ng was commenced. Active steps fur
its completion, however, began four years ago
when Cul. 28:: N. Saimaa took the architectural
chtAge of the great work, and the massive and

This dome is a wonderful piece of work—aa
can only - be seen by crawling up, up, on wind=

a fat man will inevitably stick fast some day,
and over ladders where a false step would re
duce you to mince-meat. All around is iron, in

constituting the dome alone. The dome weighs
