bills to provide for the continual supply of arti
ficial limbs to soldiers, We trust Congress will

soldier of course looks to the influential organs
of the press far sympathy and support, and ex
pects it to advocate his claims at all timei. I
am sorry to say that the Government, as well as
all other subordinate office-holders, have failed
to meet the expectations of the soldier votes.
They are too apt to overlook the soldier's &dm*
and bestow their favors en those who may have
more party backing. These party maneuvers
are perfectly understood, and are looked upon
as a matter of course, and in perfect keeping
with the time-honored usages of political con
tests. It is truly interesting to notice the groat
care these office-holden' take in presenting to
the people the virtues ; end- good qualities of

—Elder lirszErEs, of the Disciple Church, we
are glad to hear, is holding a series of very in
teresting meetings at the Union Church, Sylva
nia, and with very satisfactory results. Six per
sons Were to be baptized on Wednesday of this
week, and there are signs of 'a thorough work
already in progress.
4 ; lit]) AMIDENT. —Mr. Prrun Lums, Constable
of Franklin township, in this county, had occa-*
sion to be at Snedekerville on Saturday last with
two or three other men, intending to take the
evening express going south. The train ran
past the station and slacked its speed, but did
not fully stop, we undirstand, and Mr. Ltwm
ran after the train, catching hold of the iron
railing, and attempting to pull himself into the
car, when he unexpectedly'stepped into a cul
vert, striking violently against the timbers, and
with the added momentum gained from the
train breaking his right leg twice just above the
the knee, By pluckily holding on and:drawing
himself up ho succeeded, notwithitauffing the
pain, in getting upon the train. Arriving at
Troy he was taken off the train, and an offer
was made to take hint to the Troy House; where
a room *as got ready for him ; but ho refused
to be moved from the depot, and Dr. B. W.
MORSE was sent for and set his leg carefully.
Meanwhile blankets, buffalo robes, d - c., were
brought, and ho was made comfortable es pos
sible at the depot. On Sunday morning he was
conveyed home. We understand he threatens
suit against the N.C.R.W. Company,- but we
hardly see that ho has any sufficient ground for
such an action.
MONLIOETON. : What
has become of " Ittt.r.v ”? Has the Elder si
lenced him, or has the cold winter weather be
numbed his faculties and tied his tongue ?
We had a very pleasant Christmas time this
year in our, little village. Two trees (one in
each church) were heavily laden with gifts for
.Id and young, and very prettily they looked,
with the branches bending beneath their costly
load. Mr. Ovraerme, of Towanda, delivered an
excellent lecture in the Presbyterian church.
The young ladies are deserving of great credit
fur their untiring zeal iticolleeting funds for the
scholars' presents.
The Presbyterien church has been repapered
and refurnished, which is quite an improve-
ment, and would have been some time ago..
'We hare had a writing school fora few even
ings, but strange to relate, our young gentle
men were not gentlemen enough to allow it to
continue ; we suppose because it was taught by
• a lady. -What else? We are net very proud of
,the rising generation in this place.
We are very sorry that there is so much feel
ing about our Sunday-schools. They seem to'
be prospering well enough, if they were only
left in peace. We would like to inform a mis
taken brother that the Union Sunday-school in
this phial has been in successful operation for
three if not four succeeding winters.
MIL. EDITOR ; Your last week's is
saecontains an article from G. S. Ta.txscr,
which I cannot pass without a word of com
ment. In the first place, ho deems an apology
necessary for what.was said by his brethren in
their report of the Sunday school. Institute held
here. Then, as if repenting of having conceded
so much, he goes off in a tirade on Union Sun
day-schools, declaring them to be failures, and
utterly ignoring the existence of such a school
here. Is it possible that a man, and 1w a cler
gyman, can be a resident of as small a place as
this for a year and over, and during that time
only the one school in operation, and that a
Union school superintended by a member of his
own church, and be ignorant of the fact ? Yet
so it seams, for he says : "As far as I know in
this section of country, there is not a single Un
ion Sunday-school alive and working during
these winter Sabbaths." Now let me say to the
gentleman, that if he makes the above state
ment through ignorance, he may guard against
a like error in the future. I will inform him
that, some five years sgo, the Rev. Mr. Carr-
TENDEN can't, here and organized a Union Sab
bath-school, which has been kept up summer
and winter ever since, under the superinten
dency of Baptists, Methodists and Presbyte
rian, and at this time numbers nearly one hun
dred members. And if I might be allowed lo
express a wish, it would be that it always would
be kept up as a Union school, both in name and
practice as it'now is; for I should disapprove of
sectarian doctrines being taught tei . children.
And if, as he says, all agree in "salvation
through the blood of Christ," it is the best of
proof in my mind that _all christian churches
should unite in the great work of teaching It,
leaving the particular forms of church govern
ment to riper years and maturer judgments.
Then we might look for more praying chile
tians and fewer theoretical ones. Is it possible
that there is a greater anxiety on the part 9f
ministers to build up their indiVidual churches,
than there is to bring sinners to repentarui?
If so, religion is such in name only, and the
sooner we halo a CALVIN, • Lo - rani, or some
great reformer appear among us, the better.
I am happy to say that the Presbyterian
church, through the efforts of a few individuals ;
has been thoroughly repaired on the inside, and
it now looks as though somebody cared fur it.
The Presbyterian Mite Society meets at the
house of J. H. GRISWOLD, on Thuriday evening
of this week.
The friends of Rev. H. Ain sruoso are re
quested to meet at his house on Thursday af
ternoon and evening, January 20th, and prove
to themselves that it is more "blessed to give
than to receive," by making him, as we trust, a

The winter term of our borough school open
ed on Monday of last week with a good atten
dance. And here let me say,• that I am sur
prised that men will let self get 'the better of
their judgment so far as to try to break up one
of the best graded schools we have in the coun
ty on the plea that it costs so Much, when they
'only need to look at the school report, to learn
that it costs us but thirty-eight cents a scholar
per month, which is leas than half the cost of
any Other school (excepting Darlington bor
thigh, which is about seventy cents per 'dud
ar,)in the county; and yet there are those that
would break it up if they could.
We hope our citizens will look more to their

cent visit to the Qtieen 'City of the Southern
Tier, we were agreeiddy surprised to find the
\Advertiser establishment nicely located In the
old "Hathaway House." The office occupies

and -Presses are in the basement. A more con
venientiy arranged printing house we have nev
er vialted and we are glad to know that the
proprietors are doing a flourishing business.
The Daily Advertiser has come to be onset our
most importd4dallies, and should receive the
support not o of the people of Southern Now
York, but Northern Pennsylvania. It giies all
important telegraphic now ten or twelve hours
earlier than the Newscot and Philadelphia pa
pers, besides containing local news of interest
to the people of this section.

upon us, with a frail lad of ten, and says : "This
little boy was taken from the 'Home' bygen

cars for Towanda." Our excellent female friend,
not at, all moved by the tears of the tender lit
tle orphan, leaves hiM, as only a woman can do,"
to the cold sympathies of strangers, remarking_
"The Missionary can take care of him." Of

"Home" as we have in and such a band
of women as have charge of j . We took the
little man to the Home, and he is happy ; and
he will be cared for wit s a mother's tenderness.
On the way over, he informed us "that the la
dy had slightly prevaricated ; that he had lived
in her family, not int a gentleman's, about a mile
out of Towanda," giving the name of the fami
ly; and that ho had never been at the "Home,"
as it turned out when we arrived there. The
tears and sobs of the homeless one were enough
to move the heart of a stone. Mrs. Id— truly
did what no living man could do, ander the
circumstances, in so hindsomely getting rid of
her orphan charge! Soon we shall begin to be
lieve that woman is either an angel osmhuman.

Some of our citizens are making an effort to
purchase the lands of the "burnt district" for
thB purpose of building a brick block, and there
is a fair prospect of their being successful ; but

Mr. L. M. ALLE;c, one of our - oldest citizens,
died Sunday monutig, and his funeral was at
tended at his late residence in this place Tues.

merous friends and acquaintances of the late
JOSEPH bonus, by giving the folletving a place
in your columns. Deceased was a native of
England—came to this country nearly fifty years
ago. 1827 he came to , Bradford county,
whore for many years he was engaged in busi
ness as a woolen manufacturer, and by his \ in-
Anstry had placed himself in good circumstan
ces, when he met with a heavy loss. Hie !aria,
factory was rendered useless by the destruction
of his water power by the Barclay Railroad ; so
that-the breaking out of the rebellion found
him comparatively poor. He took a decided
stand upon the Union side, by encouraging en
listments and combatting the opposition with
ill his energy, he being strongly censured for
urging men to enlist. The old hero indignant
ly replied, " Sir, liberty is 'sweet (i came to this
country to enjoy it. Two of my boys are al
ready in the army, and if it becomes necessary,
I will shoulder my gun and follow them ;" and
added (in his earnest and forcible manner).
" Liberty is worth tightmg for and dying for?'
His son, Capt. .1. B. Ixolun, with his blood
sealed his devotion to the Old Flag. Ile fell at
Antietam, in the spring of 1863.

again commenced basin( ss near :Knoxville, Tio
ga County, Pa.
• Jossru LVIIIAN possessed a 'mind of more
than ordinary capacity. He retained his men
tal faculties to the last. lie suffered intensely,
at times, for nearly three years, and during my
last visit to the family, he made use of the fol
lowing suggestive language : "Death ha`thinark
ed me for a victim; it has no terrors for me. I
have tried to live au honest life. lam waiting
and praying for the time to come when my suf
ferings will le over. Death is nothing. The
Real Man—the Soul—has only to shake off this
old, worn-out house of clay and pass to a high
er, and, I trust, happier state of existence."
He always maintained a spotless character,
was an affectionate husband, an indulgent par
ent, self-sacrilicingpatriot; and during his long
residence in Bradford and Tioga counties he ex
hibited all those higher traits of character wor
thy of imitation.
