A few weeks since, - brenty-one memberti of

institute a subordinate lodge of L0.0.F.

at about 3 o'clock, p.m., to perform the nehes

After installation all were invited to the plea

kinds of excellent cake, oysters, AT., Ac. Such
wire the luxuries in quality and quantity, that
oven the most dainty epicure could not fail to
be astistled.
After a social interview of two hours, the
brothers again repaired to the hall, initiated
seven applicants into the mysteries of the Or

ness. The visiting brothers took their depar
ture with the firm belief that a lodge starting
with such members, in such a favorable loca
tion, cannot but succeed in making its power
felt on the aide of thin fraternal principles of the

an intelligent farming coMmunity, where su

ATHENS.—Sunday morning, 2d inst.,
our village was visited with one of the most
destructive fires we have experienced for along
time, when the inexorable destroying element
raged in its wildest fury from 2 o'clock, a.m.,
for three hours, burning Mr. F. F. PAues hard
ware, stove and tin store, Jonm_ DRAKE'S dwel
ling-house, F. GRANTHAM'S tailor shop and dwel
ling, and E. HEREUCE, Ju.'s dwelling. The fire
originated in second story of PAGE'S store, and
was so far advanced before discovery as to be
beyond control, and all our. citizens ctmhl do
was to save what goods could be got at and
strive to prevent its spread. times it seem
ed as though the whole business part of town
would burn, as a' strung wind was. blowing
sparks and cinders so thick, and several times
buildings on . the opposite side of the street
caught, but they were saved by almost super
human labor. Had there been an engine and
efficient fire organization, two of the dwellings
would have been saves!. A friendly rain com
menced while the tire was et its height, and
aided in stopping the flames where they were.
The losses and insurance are about as follows :

There is a class of persons who make a busi
ness of appropriating to their own use what
ever they can find not under the homediate eye
of its owner. To such persons tires and floods
are fine thihgs to give opportunity to ply their
trades. They were on hand, as usual, to steal
the last crust these unfortunates had rescued
from the ruins. There may be some excuse for
a person following a funeral procession to steal
the plate off a dead man's coffin, for he ivill not
feel the loss of such "ornaments";•hut-the
wretch that wilt take the last crumb from the
houselcss and liofileloss, are too mean and sel

few such, and feel like passing them by on the
other side of the street and squeezing our pock

THE NEW Cutpr.cu XI ToWANDA.-011 Sunday
morning 12th inst. the splendid now churl of
S.S. Peter and Paul,, at Towanda, Bradford Co.,
Pa.;just completed through the indefatigable
energy and zeal of its Pastor,Rev. l'arnica To-
NEP, was blessed and opend fur Divine wor
ship.
The building is a perfect model of neat Goth
ic architecture and Atlects credit upon its
architect, Mr. t J. Pnaur, of Binghamton, New
York: It is of rick, with a granite base, hav
ing an attractive front of embellished cut stone,
chastely and elegantly designed. - The building
is 100 feet long by 50 ibet wide, and is surmount
ed by a grand spire 190 feet high. This is the
greatest altitude of any spire in Towanda, and
can be seen for miles around. The population,
irrespective of creed, feel a Just pride in the
new church, and materially aidr4lhather Tostu
in its erection.-
The basement is 14 feei high, and will be used
eventually for the purpose:l,ot a parochial school.
The stone work of this part of the building is
also a rulignifieent piece, of handiwork, being
handsomely cut and designed, and reflecting
credit on all concerned. The windows .of the
church are of stained glass, of superior material
and workmanship. and, without exaggeration,
the front of thehuilding for becoming neatness
of execution and general appearance, is far in
advance bf almost any specimen of ecclesiasti
cal architecture to be found. The church will
contain three altars, and has but yet to be pins
tared and receive the final frescoing and other
embellislunents.to be a complete structure. It
Cost a large sum of money, and there is still
something dui) on it. Father Toxin; however,
In conjunction with the muted liberality and ex
ertion of his flock, will doubtless in (Tim Blue
have this paid oil; v.h.ch will be another evi
dence of the great progress and good accom
plished since he has had charge of the parish.
The old church was a rickety tram° building,
badly located. and utterly unsuited to the grow
ing wants of the congregation. The present
structure has been pretty much completed since
last May, at which time the workmen had only
progressed as far as the bait° of the i bnilibug.
In addition to this; the Ree. Pastor' has pur
chased two mo't desirable and valuable lots of
ground for church 'purposes, which, with /he
other improvements not euumerated, will make
the entire ecclesiastical property a most valua
ble one to the Diocese of Scranton.
On. the morning in question the church was
crowded, and Solemn High Mass was celebrated

As teacher of the colored school in lliktriet
No. 44, of the counties of Shawnee and Jeffer
son, I think-it would not be amiss to say a few
words to the readers of your paper in-regard to
colored children that aro growing up among ns.
-illy scholars aro very studious and learn - very
fast. Sonic of them have had poor chances for
education'; but they exhibit faculties equal to;
if not better than the majority of white children
that I have taught heretolore. I would like
those men who think the black man - has no
brains• to come and listen to my school one day ;
perhaps they would be better Ale to judge then
than now.
I am a native of Bradford county, Pa.. conse
quently knew but little about the black man ex
cept from reading and hearsay. But I havO
now learned from my own experience that the
negro is quick to learn and comprehend. ~
how, as a friend of liberty and right, and the
prosperity of our nation, I am in favor of edu
cating the negro. Give him a chance, for with
out means no person can prosper, black or
white.
Mr. EVANS, the County Superintendent, made
me a visit at my school room Friday last. Ho
questioned the scholars on arithmetic, geogra
phy and orthography, and was well pleased to
hear them answer so promptly. He classed the
with the common run of schools in the
county.
I am much gratitied.to see tlie people of Eau
ass taking such an interest in the cause of edu
cation, and sincerely hope that this great cause
will be carried on, - for I believe it to be the only
sure foundation of success. E. P. COUSIN.
