    Ilints 'About &dl.
In the. greater part of the United
States, the stabling of stock in.:Win
ter is a necessity, and it would-.be a
decided. improvement some other
sections Where it has never been ap
plied. Great improvements have been
made in -the construction otstikbles
within the last few , yew", et=
in the manner of eroding
troughs. The high . racks of holies
and cattle from which they bad to.
arrive their food, scattering hayseeds,
and dust over their hekda and into
the:
p ypl3,. have in a great measure
been disc& ded. No one thinks of
erecting them in newly builtstables
at this day, and where they still hold
a place in old • ones, troughs should
be substituted. Besides the iniurious
effects above named, the arum' is
obliged to - assume an unnatural po
sition to reach its food, and after
reaching it, must change its position
to masticate and swallow it.
We advise every one who still re
tains those racks in :his stables to
have them removed and substituted
by troughs of modern plans, which
are very simple and well suited to
the uses for which theyare intended;
and do this now, before the feeding
season commences. IA the improve
ment is postponed until then, there
are nine chances to one 'that it will
not he done, and• the poor animals
will have to go through another %Pra
ter in the old star-gazing, break-neck
fashion to reach their food. The man
who invented these overhead mobil
for feeding stock must have been a
'queer gemons,,and those who adhere
to the system with such pertinancity,
are rather stiff-necked people.
Want of sufficient light is a great
fault in a large - majority .of stables,
and is very injurious to stock in
more ways than one.. To be shut up
in darkness day after day is very
hard on the eyes. If a horse be led
out of one of those stables into the
open light, he is ramble for a time to
distinguish objects properly, and is
liable to stumble and become alarm
ed until the eyes adjust themselves
to - their new position. The same
difficulty occurs in entering the dark
stable from the outside:
Darkness' is injurious to the ani
mal's health, which is easily -proven
by vegetables growing in dark places.
Light is one of the ”reat agencies
that imparts health and vigor to both.
the animal and vegetable Sy,tein,and
being so very cheap (right to be liber
ally 'supplied. All . stable - windows
should be glazed in movable sash,
and of such size as to admit a full
flow"of light. The division f light
and darkness as measured by day
and night should be the governing
rule in both animal and :-etable
economy.
Free ventilation of pure atmosphere
air should be a. prominent feature in
every stable. Without this, the bes
state of animal -health cannot be
' maintained. There are so many
plans of: accomplishing this, that
each farmer may-choose the one that
best suits his-views. The great ques
tion is, Will he do it ?—American
strick Journal.
The Use of Salt
The use of salt as a fertilizer is not
nearly as much considered as we
think its value demands. It might
be applied every third or fourth year.
It is the usual practice to scatter the
salt broadcast, at the rate of four or
five bushels to the acre, after the
grain has been put in. Many farmers.
who have used it in this manner,
have given their testimony that their
crop of wheat has been greatly in
creased, and the crop of weeds, bugs
and worms correspondingly dimish
ed. If this is so, it is evident that
salt performs two important offices,
while ordinary manure performs but
one. Many of our readers, doutless,
have a small pasture in which they
keep a cow and occasionally turn a
horse. Many of4these pastures have
coarse grass growing in them, while
in other places the grass dries up
quickly on approach of warm and dry
weather. All such pastures will be
much improved, and often the coarse
grasses . will entirely disappear . if a
harrow is passed freely over back and
forth during this month, and salt at
the rate of eight to ten- bushels to
-the acre be spread over the ground.
—Germantown Telegraph.
lat.H3RLtiCi FOOD FOR StirniE.—H. Wol
cott of Genesee, N. Y., gives his
ideas on this subject as follows:—"As
economy of time and fuel is of first
importance, I would suggest using a
pan instead of a kettle. For the
sides use one and a half, or two inch
planks for the bottom, and six inches
in width. On the ends use sheet
iroh.orAine. If it is made four feet
square, one foot in depth will hold
ten bushels or more of roots, or
twelve bushels of grain or meal. If
meal alone was to be*cooked, I don't
know but a false bottom would be
necces.sary, with perforited pines to
carry the stetaux into the meat . A
trial could be. made of using two
inches of corn in the bottom to,pre
vent the meal sticking and burning,
or make a partition so as to have the
tire arch - only a little more than half
the width of the pan, passing the fire
to the back end and returning it to
the chimney on the opposite side
from the arch, at the front end."
OLD Cows.—How long is it profit
able to keep a cow. _ L. M.
I consider a cow in her prime (all
things considered) from five to ten
rs old. Some cows hold out much
befter thanL others, as with men and
horses; and axe really as young to
all intents and purposes at twelve
years, as others are at nine or ten.
Never keep a cow through the winter
after she, gets to going down hill; or
kill a superior cow on account of her
age, if her teeth are good, and she is
all right, without any signs of deterio
ration: Cows ehould be milked reg,u
-: *. and by steady milkers.
PEtNIM may be joked about, but
there is fortune in them. Two
years ago, an enteprising Yankee
went to North Carolina with a few
hundred dollars and began eultivat
ingpeanuts. This year he has sold
his crop for $84,000, 'getting $.54,000
profit,
Tue. New Jersey cranberry crop
this season in Ocean counts alone is
valtr:d at $2;300,000. An acre of
good cratberry-land if now estimat
ed to be worth from $lOOO to $2500.
The demand in market is always in
~ y.cess of supply.
Tax Japanese wrap the roots of
plants in a mixture of earth and
ground carrots, when transporting
them. This maintains the mois=ture
- of the earth and in some respects
nourishes the root.
