Borrn Cnuit Dec. 5, 1869. 118— DEAR &roam :' Among the vast multitudes of patriotic men who swelled the ranks of the Union Army when the darkest cluuds . of war were hovering over thiti Republic, many thousand veterans still . live and move about In our midst. These men have passed through the perils and hardships of a terrible conflict, and have unfortunately lost one or more of their limbs, and the consequence is, they are destined tv hobble about an crutches during the remainder of their burdensome life. It is true a small percentage of them are able to procure artificial substitutes, but it is a very small percentage at the exorbitant price of one hundred and twenty-five dollars per limb. Why is it that this wealthy Republic cannot furnish her late defenders with an artificial substitute once at least in four or five years, or their equiv alent in money? What is fifteen dollars per month for a man who has suffered his right arm or leg to lib severed frvin his body? Prior. to, the war these men were able to maintain them. selves, but now their debility is such as to pre ,vent them from laboring at their farmer , occu pation. Some may ask the question, "Why do I they not learns trade or educate themselves 'e t but it must kFremembered that all have not the advantages of acquiring an education, and even though they do tit themselves for any or dinary position.of trust, ten chances to one - the3r, cannot 'obtain situation. I know this to be is fact, and can substantiate it. Let timusewlin their application, and they will receive an an swer stating that they have a very good opinion of them, but do not care to employ. Thu is a fitting reply to men who have made such a sae rifice—men who, when the war trumpet sound- ed, left their pleasant firesides and started for the front, singing "We are coming, Father ABRAHAM, three hundred thousand more." To day ABRAHAM is dead, and consequently the nation's deeds are being forgotten. However, it is hoped that Congress during the neat 'ses sion will make ample provision to furnish leg less and armless soldiers with artificial substi tutes. • W, H. F. Sheshequin, Dec. 4, 1869. VW' Ma. ALvolizi—Dear Sir: I give you abriet statement of that part of our Sun day-school missionary work, dutie since last spring, which relates to the formaticin of !wit SqbbatA-schools in destitute communities. Of these schools fourteen have been organized during the season, all of which have - been suc cessful, with one partial failure, owing to the fact that it had no professing Christian to as sist in carrying it on. The communities where these schools are planted, if placed together, would form a district covering sixteen miles square, and the whole of it almost entirely des titute of any means of public . religious instruc tion except that afforded by the Sabbath-schools. Three of these schools have female superinten dents. Some of them have been specialry bless ed. One Superintendent and her parents, with one or two other persons in the same school ; an assistant-superintendent and teacher in an other, have professed conversion during the summer. The Testament and Scripture Reader ire the only books of study used in tiovireal of these, mission schools. Ou every Sabbath, after the recitations, each scholar is called upon to stand up and repeat, from memory some particular verse of Scripture. At each session, all say the Lord's Prayer, and repeat a part or the whole of the Ten Commandments. In thli way, some of the yonnger children, unable to read, com mit these usefal lessons to memory. All of these schools bare, to some extent, been assist , ed in procuring library books W and Sunday pa pers, which furnish almost every family with good home reading. In all the neighborhoods, whore this Sunday work has been begun, there is a marked Improvement in the observance'of the Sabbath day. A report of other departments of our work may he presented at some other time. We do not forget our indebtedness to friends who al xva s cheerfully co-operate with US in this work. Above all, do we gratefolly acknowledge the signal favor of our Heavenly Father attending our efforts in bohall of the youth. Ever cordially yours, Towanda, Dec. 6, 1861. " R. Cmrrniorrn 118... Mx.
