. great measure the reason for neg

apt., in these days of high priced
to confider it most profitable
to . apply Manure to those fields_ handy
and most easily worked; without any
great- time in going to and from head
quarters. Such fields are often allow-'
id to remain just barely in grass for
tonny years, then plowed up, a crop
,1 oats or late spring grain taken off,
and nothing returned to the soil.
Now it would be an easy matter to
bring them in a good and productive
condition by keeping sheep on them;
not 'Merely as many as Could make a
living off such:poor land, bnt by herd
ing .them nights and part of the day,
allowing them access to a better
pasturage during the afternoons. In
this way the land would .19e greatly
benetitted - by a little expense, as the
sheep besides leaving their droppings
cattered over the • land, and.no bet
ter manure could bo desired, would'
c rop all the bushes, weeds, poor gras
s,_-;, etc., so closely, that they would
~.6on be exterminated, and white'
clover Would soon spring up in their
pl tees. After two or three years of
hmli treatment, if the land is then
plowed shallow, and thickly sown
with red clover, it would produce a
good crop for early-summer, and the
clover being left to itself to grow and
attain a good size after the other
pastures come in at harvest .time,
could then be plowed under, and
.1 good foundation of g reen manure
on which to grow a crop of wheat or

Orchard Grass.
We have no knowledge of the value
f this grass for fattening cattle; but
we think our dairy men have yet to
learn hoiv valuable-it is for their pur
poses.: It is sown through this sec
tion hardly by one farmer in twenty
-- why, we do not know, excepting
_ that it would be an improvement on
the routine system of clover and
timothy, which has been in vogue for
a hundred years.
Orchard grass is one of the very
'earliest to start in the spring. It not
„only - comes forward early, but it
grows continuously through the sea-
No other grass is so little affect
dronths or_ will bear without
iiinry heavy stocking. It seems to
i 4 row and keep green till almost new
years, and is most emphatically a
permanent pasture, lasting many
years, improving the soil by the radi
ation of its numerous fibrous roots,
• and will crowd out daises and - most
other vegetation. It wants to occupy
tile- ground solely.
Orchard grass is however, the most
unsuitable of all grasses for the lawn
or grass plot around the house on
account of its rank growth and ten
dency to grow in bunches. This is
obviated in the field only by this
sowing, *which should be not less
than two bushels per acre. For hay
it should be cut quite young—and a
good plan is to saw clover with it.
This lasts al couple of years when the
orchard grass will crowd it out and
take possession. An orchard grass,sod
on being plowed up, is always found
to be black and rich. .It is a melio
rator and improver of the soil.—
